Just some study tips that I like to use, and thought maybe other people would find helpful!
1. Re-write your notes in ‘casual form’
This is probably the method I use the most, just because I find it funny. Basically what I do is I write a summary version of my notes, but I write it in the same way I would speak if I was trying to explain this topic to a friend. When your notes say: “David Hym used Faeries to Explain the theory of Monetary Neutrality in the 17th century” you re-write “Our 17th century homie  David H had a slight fetish with Faeries, but that’s his own business. All we care about is the fact that price be change if money supply be changing.” This method can take a little bit longer, but I do find that it makes your notes more interesting to look over later. And more importantly, it really helps you remember things because your are rewriting it in your own words. Everyone says the best way to learn something is to teach it, so imagine you are teaching a friend over a beer, you wouldn’t explain it in casual structural form, you would explain it how you would talk. Honestly I rewrite my notes a lot for studying purposes, and this method is probably the most beneficial. It summaries everything as well as put it into your own words, and the best part is that its kinda funny!
2. Paint your nails
I always find that I feel more “study aesthetic” when I my nails are painted. I know this sounds kind of strange, but when my nails are painted I automatically feel like typing on my computer is better, and my handwriting is more aesthetically pleasing. I just feel like a more composed and accomplished person overall. I cant really explain it, and honestly its probably just because I never really have my nails painted, but hey it doesn’t hurt to try if you find you are lacking motivation.
3. Use your music playlist and as a timer
No matter what type of music you listen to, I recommend making your own playlist. The reason I suggest doing this is because you can use your playlist as a timer! I find that when I have a timer app on my phone, I check it WAY to many times, seeing how much time is left, did I turn the volume up, ect. BUT if you make a playlist, filled with instrumental music for example, and then every 5-8 songs, you input a song with lyrics, you know that songs with lyrics are your break time! So, as soon as the instrumental fades out, and your 1-3 lyric songs come on, you know its free time! And once the lyrics end, its time to get back to work. You can literally shut your phone off if you use your laptop for music, and you wont be tempted to check a timer every 10 minutes to make sure you didn’t miss the break time alarm!
4. Download the “Get Shit Done” App
This app is wonderful because it literally just sets a time limit for you to get some shit done. Although I prefer a Pomodoro type clock for normal studying, if I have something to get done (An essay, a set of notes) that I am seriously procrastinating, I find this app helpful. All you do is set a time limit, set a reward and a punishment, and decide if you get breaks or not. As soon as you hit start, you have to complete the task in the allotted time period, otherwise the app sends you a mean message and the punishment you decide is put on the screen. This app is good for when you need to just DO something, but your motivation is -2. I find the allotted time period helps me overcome procrastination in a way that Pomodoro cannot.
5. Listen to Disney Music
The third tip in this post was to use your playlist as a timer, so going off that, I thought I would talk about type of music that I enjoy listening to while studying. I am a huge nerd. no shame. And as much as I enjoy studying listening to movie soundtracks or video game soundtracks, I find that what I like the most is Disney Land music soundtracks. I know that sounds super lame, but honestly the music that Disney Land plays in its ride ques is so awesome for studying because its happy, and upbeat, and it makes you feel less like you are dying. Also the music is not so intense you are freaking out (Video Game soundtracks for me) or so calm that you are falling asleep (Classical music for me) is just a nice, happy, in between. This is the playlist I use - its nice because it has some ride tracks mixed in, so I find that I study while the instrumental tracks are on, and the lyrical ride tracks are my breaks.

| Short guide on how to be a happier person |
It’s been ages since my last advice/tips posts so I thought I would make a “How to be happy” post. Studying is important however, you, as a human and your emotions as well as mental well being is 10x more important.

The Full Potential Challenge
Ever wonder what your life would be like if you lived up to your full potential? Would your body be healthier? Your skin clearer? Bank account bigger? I think about these things all the time, and, judging my a previous post, you guys do to. Below is a chart designed to help all of us live up to our full potential. I’ve broken it down into time frames to help keep you from getting overwhelmed. Write the chart down and hang it someplace where you can see it all the time. I will be starting this challenge tomorrow, 9/8. I’ll check in with you guys every Sunday to track my progress. I have specific goals in mind for myself, and you guys should make some too! I really want to know how you guys are doing. Tag your progress posts with #sbfpc so I can track it and take a look. Let’s get to it!
EVERY MORNING
Stretch. First thing. Really give your body enough time to wake up. Touch your toes. Roll out your shoulders. Do not hit snooze!
Do your full skincare routine. I have mine detailed here, but do whatever works for you and your complexion. Be gentle and consistent.
Brush your teeth and floss. I used to be a big floss-skipper too, but you’d be amazed at how dig of a difference it makes. Rinse with a whitening mouthwash. I use one by Crest, and I notice a major difference in my teeth’s overall whiteness in just a few days.
Give yourself enough time to get ready. Whether you’re a wash-and-go kind of girl, or someone who spends an hour doing a full contouring routine before class (and either one is fine!), make sure you aren’t rushing. If you need to wake up a few minutes earlier than normal, so be it. Rushing sets an awful, stressed-out tone for the rest of the day. Allow yourself to be relaxed before taking on the day.
Eat something. I’m not going to say eat a big breakfast, because some people (myself included) just can’t eat in the morning. But you should eat, or at least bring a little something with you to work or school. If you can’t eat a full breakfast, grab a fruit! You won’t be as hungry come lunch time, making you less likely to gorge yourself.
Shower. You can do this at night, in the morning, whatever. Again, this is something you should allow some time for. I don’t wash my hair every day, but I do condition it every day (from the ears down). Scrub yourself with a delicious-smelling body wash. If you shave, make yourself as smooth as a dolphin, dude. If you don’t, then don’t and don’t ever ever ever let anyone make you feel bad or weird about it. When you get out of the shower, wrap yourself in a fluffy towel and totally slather your sexy self with lotion. Top to bottom. Do it as soon as you can post-shower so it can really sink in.
Put leave-in condition throughout your damp hair and comb it through.
Put on an outfit that makes you feel good! So important!
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
Take a look at your daily to-do list. Knock out the most pressing stuff first. Take pride when you cross things off your list.
Make your bed! Oh my god, make your bed. Do it. Do it. Do it.
EVERY AFTERNOON
Follow the “touch it once” approach. This is a truly life-changing thing. When a task is in front of you, no matter how big or small, just do it right then and there. How many times have you gotten a work email or homework assignment and thought, “Eh, I’ll do it later”? And then later never comes? Once something pops up, do it once. Squash it and be done. Cross things off your list and feel like a badass.
Try to go for a walk at lunch. Even one little lap around the block or campus will reenergize you like nobody’s business.
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
Be present. This is so hard for me too, but you have to make a major effort to be present in whatever you’re doing. Be engaged and plugged-in and just exist in the moment. Give 100 percent.
Be friendly to friends and strangers. A smile goes a long way.
Eat something. Eat what you packed for lunch (see below) and take a break from working while you do it. You need “you time”!
EVERY EVENING
Take your makeup off as soon as you’re in for the night. Wash your face with your full routine and let your skin have a break.
Workout. You can also do this in the morning. Whatever works for you. Make a great playlist and go hard af. Get your cardio in. Get your strength training in. Earn every freaking sweat bead forming on your forehead. Earn your shower!
Knock out your homework. Life is infinitely better you don’t have anything hanging over your head. Half the time, the energy and emotion you spent dreading/putting off your work is ten times worse than the work itself.
Make a list of what needs to be done tomorrow. It’ll set you up for success the next day, and you won’t forget anything!
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
Lay out your clothes for tomorrow. This will save you SO MUCH TIME in the morning omg I can’t even tell you how important this is.
Eat something great. And once you’ve decided to be done eating for the night, be done. Brush your teeth so you can’t eat again.
After brushing, do a whitening treatment. Whether it’s classic baking soda, a Crest white strip, or a laser. Do something. And floss! Retainers in too, ladies 0:)
Relax! Take a few hours to do what YOU want to do. Scroll through Tumblr, binge on some Netflix, FaceTime gossip with your friends, anything. Do whatever makes you happiest.
Shut the electronics off an hour before you want to go to bed. Put your phone on sleep mode. If you stare at the screen, it will keep you awake and alert and you won’t be able to fall asleep. A good night’s sleep is crucial for weightless and general happiness lol
Do a quick sweep of your room and see if there’s anything you can put away real quick. A clean space is a happy space.
Crawl into your bed (aren’t you happy you took the time to make it?!) and read a book by lamplight for a while. When you start to feel sleepy, go to sleep. Don’t push it. You kicked ass today and you deserve rest.
EVERY WEEKEND
Do something with your friends. It just has to be one thing. Even if you’re just hanging out at the coffee shop, spending time with your squad will make you a better, happier person.
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
Do something just for you. Set your laptop up in the bathroom and watch a Netflix marathon while you take a bubble bath. Buy an old school bottle of Mr. Bubbles ($3 at Target!) and really just soak. Relax. Light a candle.
Do something creative. You can read a book, write, blog, draw, code, anything. It just has to be something that speaks to your passion.
Track your progress. Just do this once a week so it doesn’t become all-consuming. And remember that non-scale victories are just as important as shedding pounds.
Take the time to be grateful. Tell your friend how much you admire her taste in music. Mention to your mom how much you love her cooking and how happy you are that she takes care of you. Thank your teaching after an especially interesting lecture. When you do something awesome, take a moment to admire yourself. Be grateful for even the little things.
Anything I missed? Reblog + add yours! Don’t forget to tag your progress!

ATTENTION STUDYBLRS
Don’t worry about grades.
Don’t worry about that one bad assignment or that badly-marked paper.
Don’t worry about that presentation you had to do while stuttering with a shaky voice and clammy hands.
Don’t worry about what your peers think or view you as. That is not important, and I promise you they do not see what you think of yourself as. That little mistake you made during your presentation that you keep thinking about? Others forget about it minutes later.
Don’t feel guilty about having one day to yourself, for taking breaks. (Just don’t make a habit out of it and let it extend for over one day at a time.)
Don’t worry when you mistakenly prioritize. Step back, take a deep breath, and re-evaluate your priorities.
Don’t worry and stress about what you want to do in life, and what you want to pursue. Stressing about that won’t get you anywhere, just to a place filled with more stress and perhaps even regrets. Continue exploring and prevailing.
Don’t worry about failure. Life has a funny way of working things out.
Keep doing you – failures and grades do NOT define you.

pen review post thing kind of by @somestudy
(or: ella owns too many black pens for her own good) my previous pen review post, if you’re interested ~~
warning: this is going to be a long-ish post
muji 4-in-1 multi pen: this has been my go-to pen for taking notes in class!! it’s a black pen, blue pen, red pen, and mechanical pencil all in one. very convenient + would recommend to anyone who wants to carry as little with them as possible. (would also recommend purchasing a combo eraser/correction tape. i only take this pen, the eraser/correction tape, and then the signo and other muji pen to school!! and, like, two highlighters. i have downsized significantly lMAo) – those who don’t like large bodied pens might find this pen uncomfortable to hold, but i think it’s all right
uni-ball signo um-100: i!! love!! this!! pen!! i bought the 1.0mm version way before this one, and while they’re pretty similar, this one for sure has a better ink flow. i also own the one with a grip but i can’t find it at the moment (oops); they function exactly the same, but the grip offers an option for those concerned about ergonomically designed pens. anyWAys yes i love this pen and how it writes + i did this mind map with it a while back!! i’m almost tempted to call it my favorite pen over the pilot precise v5
pilot hi-tec-c maica: i used to stray away from fine tip pens because i felt like i was scratching the paper with them and that sensation just gave me all kinds of weird shivers; however, i think i’ve found that i’m okay with fine tip conical pens, but not fine tip needle-point pens. the pilot precise v5 is also a needle-point pen, but it’s a rollerball and has a thicker tip, which i prefer. but, yeah. i feel like i’m doing the paper scratching thing with this pen. i’m guessing this is a personal issue, though, since it basically has five stars on jetpens
zebra sarasa clip: a good pen in general!! i consistently buy refills for it. i don’t have anything super special to say about it. it does what it should?? LOL;;; i bough this pen irl when i was making my foray into thinner-tipped pens, so i tried out both the 0.4mm and the 0.3mm. i didn’t buy the 0.3mm one because of the aforementioned paper scratching feeling, but the 0.4mm is all well and good. i’ll probably buy the gray one when i get the chance to. the second photo in this photoset shows notes i took in class with this pen!
stabilo point 88: I’M GONNA BE REAL i bought this pen and the fineliner because there’s been so much fUSS about them in the studyblr community, and in my 1.5yrs of being a studyblr i had never tried them. i don’t like felt tip pens in general, so i’m not a super big fan of it.. heh;; i wrote the happy new year section in my january spread with this pen just to try it out. it’s okay. i think it’d be good for, like, coloring books?? eh. i just own this pen now. it’s in my life
pilot juice: WOW i also!! love!! this!! pen!! it has a better ink flow than the sarasa pen imo, but i usually alternate between the two because i.. prefer all my ink to run out at the same time.. .. idk i just started thinking about this logically as i typed it out LOL ANYWAYS IT’S A GREAT PEN 10/10 would recommend. every time i write with it i’m like “Wow I can’t believe I hated fine tip pens for so long”
muji gel ink: my thoughts on the 0.5mm muji pen all apply to the 0.38mm one. for real. they’re the same except this one has a thinner tip wooOo ~~ like i said earlier, this is one of three pens i bring to school ((lol)), and i use it mostly for worksheets/things where i want to cram a lot of things into a small space
staedtler triplus fineliner: #StudyblrMadeMeBuyIt ++ yeah so same things as what i said for the stabilo point 88, except i think that if you’re looking to buy a pack of fineliners, you should go with the staedtlers. they feather less than the stabilos, which makes them better for writing. i’m sure they’d still be good for coloring, though. MY ONE ISSUE WITH THESE (besides the fact that they’re felt tips pens and i am Not a Fan of felt tip pens) is that!! the cap does not click on!! and it can just FLY OFF!! heck
+ beneath each pen is a highlighter test: top one is with a mildliner, bottom one is with a regular sharpie highlighter.
i recommend the signo & juice pens out of all of the ones on this list!! if you have any questions, feel free to send them to me. i have too many thoughts about pens for my own good

15 things I tell myself when I don't want to work/study
1. You are very lucky and privileged to have access to almost unlimited knowledge and you should appreciate that. 2. Be one of those rare people who step over their insecurities and succeed. 3. Only 5 minutes. Only today. (Repeat it 5 minutes later and every day). 4. You will know what to do as soon as you start. Ideas never appear from inactivity. 5. Make yourself proud. 6. One hour every day doesn’t feel much but it’s 365 hours a year. You can’t not succeed after so much work. 7. It’s not supposed to be easy. Nothing good is easy. 8. If you had a child to look after, you’d make them study because you want them to accomplish something. Don’t you love yourself? 9. “Everything you want is on the other side of fear” George Adair 10. Every mistake increases our chance to make progress. 11. If you give up now, you’ll have to return to this later anyway but from the very beginning. 12. Let the process be your result. 13. Every moment you thought your fears would suppress you has become the time you made it. 14. Maybe you think you can never find something to use your skills and mindset for. But if you continue investing in what matters to you, it will find its way out there. 15. I allow you to think globally. You have a right to the boldest dream.

How to Study Like a Harvard Student
Taken from Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld, daughter of the Tiger Mother
Preliminary Steps 1. Choose classes that interest you. That way studying doesn’t feel like slave labor. If you don’t want to learn, then I can’t help you. 2. Make some friends. See steps 12, 13, 23, 24. General Principles 3. Study less, but study better. 4. Avoid Autopilot Brain at all costs. 5. Vague is bad. Vague is a waste of your time. 6. Write it down. 7. Suck it up, buckle down, get it done. Plan of Attack Phase I: Class 8. Show up. Everything will make a lot more sense that way, and you will save yourself a lot of time in the long run. 9. Take notes by hand. I don’t know the science behind it, but doing anything by hand is a way of carving it into your memory. Also, if you get bored you will doodle, which is still a thousand times better than ending up on stumbleupon or something. Phase II: Study Time 10. Get out of the library. The sheer fact of being in a library doesn’t fill you with knowledge. Eight hours of Facebooking in the library is still eight hours of Facebooking. Also, people who bring food and blankets to the library and just stay there during finals week start to smell weird. Go home and bathe. You can quiz yourself while you wash your hair. 11. Do a little every day, but don’t let it be your whole day. “This afternoon, I will read a chapter of something and do half a problem set. Then, I will watch an episode of South Park and go to the gym” ALWAYS BEATS “Starting right now, I am going to read as much as I possibly can…oh wow, now it’s midnight, I’m on page five, and my room reeks of ramen and dysfunction.” 12. Give yourself incentive. There’s nothing worse than a gaping abyss of study time. If you know you’re going out in six hours, you’re more likely to get something done. 13. Allow friends to confiscate your phone when they catch you playing Angry Birds. Oh and if you think you need a break, you probably don’t. Phase III: Assignments 14. Stop highlighting. Underlining is supposed to keep you focused, but it’s actually a one-way ticket to Autopilot Brain. You zone out, look down, and suddenly you have five pages of neon green that you don’t remember reading. Write notes in the margins instead. 15. Do all your own work. You get nothing out of copying a problem set. It’s also shady. 16. Read as much as you can. No way around it. Stop trying to cheat with Sparknotes. 17. Be a smart reader, not a robot. Ask yourself: What is the author trying to prove? What is the logical progression of the argument? You can usually answer these questions by reading the introduction and conclusion of every chapter. Then, pick any two examples/anecdotes and commit them to memory (write them down). They will help you reconstruct the author’s argument later on. 18. Don’t read everything, but understand everything that you read. Better to have a deep understanding of a limited amount of material, than to have a vague understanding of an entire course. Once again: Vague is bad. Vague is a waste of your time. 19. Bullet points. For essays, summarizing, everything. Phase IV: Reading Period (Review Week) 20. Once again: do not move into the library. Eat, sleep, and bathe. 21. If you don’t understand it, it will definitely be on the exam. Solution: textbooks; the internet. 22. Do all the practice problems. This one is totally tiger mom. 23. People are often contemptuous of rote learning. Newsflash: even at great intellectual bastions like Harvard, you will be required to memorize formulas, names and dates. To memorize effectively: stop reading your list over and over again. It doesn’t work. Say it out loud, write it down. Remember how you made friends? Have them quiz you, then return the favor. 24. Again with the friends: ask them to listen while you explain a difficult concept to them. This forces you to articulate your understanding. Remember, vague is bad. 25. Go for the big picture. Try to figure out where a specific concept fits into the course as a whole. This will help you tap into Big Themes – every class has Big Themes – which will streamline what you need to know. You can learn a million facts, but until you understand how they fit together, you’re missing the point. Phase V: Exam Day 26. Crush exam. Get A.
