Here’s what YOU need to know about the affects climate change has on the ocean!
Tumblr media
GLOBAL WARMING! A lot of people including the president of the United States don’t believe its a real thing. I’ve witnessed a tweet from president trump mentioning how the eastern part of the US is colder then ever before proving that global warming doesn’t exist. What he doesn’t understand is that the reason it’s called global warming is because the average temperature of the earth is slowly increasing. When the earth’s temperature increases even by one degree there is a huge impact on the environment and the ecosystems around the world. One very large part of the planet that is greatly being affected is the ocean. The affects are so disastrous yet most of us don’t know it’s happening because it’s not visible to the human eye.
The planets most diverse ecosystem is the Great Barrier Reef and currently it’s in some serious trouble! The rising temperature of the ocean has caused the coral in the reef to cook. The coral is the lifeline of the reef, providing food, shelter and more to every specie that lives there. When the coral cooks it desiccating the ecosystem. Here are some very important facts that you need to know about the great barrier reef.
·         Climate change is the biggest threat to the Great Barrier Reef
·         The temperatures of the ocean can cause the coral to cook
·         There has been three mass events that have cooked the coral one in                  1998, 2002 and 2016
·         50% of the reef experienced some sort of coral being cooked
If you would like to learn more here is a short video on the effected areas of the Great Barrier Reef.

How Eating More Plant-Based Can Benefit the Environment
Tumblr media
Over the past several years, vegetarian and vegan diets have become increasingly more popular in our society. There are many reasons why someone would choose to switch to a plant-based diet, whether it’s to save the animals, environmental concerns, food intolerances or personal and cultural values. In this post, however, I will be focusing on the various ways that eating more plant-based can benefit the environment.
The animal-based agriculture industry accounts for an exorbitant amount of the damage to our environment. Here are some of the benefits of following a plant-based diet:
1.    Conserving Water
·      According to the Water Footprint Network, it takes 1,000 gallons of water to produce only ONE gallon of milk. Also, it requires about 100 times more water to produce a pound of animal protein than a pound of grain protein. So, by these numbers alone you can see how eating less meat and dairy or completely avoiding them can DRASTICALLY help reduce the amount of water consumption by animal-based agriculture.
2.    Reducing Your Carbon Footprint
·      Livestock production is responsible for more than 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that a meat-based diet creates 7x more greenhouse gas emissions than one that is plant-based. These numbers only account for production alone, not to mention manure management, transportation and fuel to grow their feed (Major Cuts of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Livestock Within Reach, 2019)
3.    Cleaner Air & Water
·      Large amounts of livestock being raised for food = LARGE amounts of manure. 300 million tons of manure are produced from factory farms in the U.S. alone… per year. So, what happens to all this waste? The hundreds of toxins in such large quantities can’t be absorbed by the soil, so they find their way into groundwater and then into rivers and oceans – destroying marine ecosystems. They also produce ammonia, which kills fish, promotes algae growth, and contributes to smog. As well, the air surrounding factory farms contains immense amounts of carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other harmful emissions (Ventrice, 2015).
If switching to a completely plant-based diet is unattainable for you, try simply reducing your meat and dairy consumption – maybe even for one day a week! Any and all changes toward a more sustainable planet make a difference!

How to say NO to single use plastics in your daily life!
There has been a growing concern over recent years on the amount of plastic waste that people are throwing away on a daily basis. For years, we have been discarding plastic shopping bags, straws, coffee cups, water bottles and food packaging without a second thought. Just to give you some perspective, earthday.org has posted some shocking facts on single use plastic waste:
·      In 2016, world plastics production totaled around 335 MILLION METRIC TONNES.
·      Humans buy about 1,000,000 plastic bottles PER MINUTE in total.
·      Around 4 TRILLION PLASTIC BAGS are used worldwide annually.
So now, we are here to inform the public so we can help reduce these insane numbers!
Here are some simple and effective ways to minimize/eliminate the single use plastics in your daily life:
1.    When you are going to the grocery store or shopping mall, bring your own reusable bags! You can purchase some from grocery stores themselves, Walmart or even Amazon.
2.    Bring your own reusable water bottle! There are many water fountains and potable water stations at most public places to fill yours up at, which will save you many unnecessary purchases of plastic water bottles.
3.    There are two ways to reduce waste when getting your morning coffee: first, you can bring your own traveller mug, and second, if you know your order normally gets served with a straw, politely ask for no straw when ordering, and simply sip it from the cup.
4.    Instead of wrapping up leftovers in plastic bags/plastic wrap, try using beeswax wrap – a fantastic alternative that can be molded, cleaned and reused.
Even these small changes can make a large difference! Do your part when you can to contribute to a more sustainable world!

What you need to know about the world's ENERGY and how to help fight against CLIMATE CHANGE!
What is one thing every country in the world needs in order to operate? The answer is energy! Energy is so important that countries aren’t concerned enough about how they obtain their energy and what it does to our planet. There are two types of energy sources found on our planet, one being renewable energy and the other non-renewable energy. What is the difference between the two? Well on earth there is only a certain amount of resources that creates non-renewable energy, meaning that the earth is unable to produce more once its all used up. As well, when these resources are used to create energy they release something called fossil fuels that have a very negative effect on our planet.
So, what are some of these energy sources and how much does the world use them?
Non-renewable energy sources
·            Coal (40.8%)
·           Natural Gas (21.6%)
·           Nuclear (10.6%)
·           Oil (4.3%)
Renewable energy sources
·         Hydro (16.4%)
·         Others (Renewables) (6.3%)
As you can see, the world heavily relies on non-renewable energy sources. So, what can we do as individuals to help fight against CLIMATE CHANGE?
·         Install solar panels/wind turbines around the outside of your home
·         Lobby or protest the use of non-renewable energy in your country
·         Spread the word! Talk to your friends and family about these important issues
BE THE CHANGE!
In the comment section below tell us how you fight against climate change.
