While there are a lot of similarities fundamentally, if I had to describe the differences between the two succinctly, Genshin Impact feels more like an anime and Honkai: Star Rail feels more like a video game.
Genshin has the fantastical charm, the colorful landscapes you could practically fall into, and the drama that makes you experience emotions you didn't even know existed.
Meanwhile in Star Rail you get to whack things with a baseball bat, you get ult animations exaggerated to the point of absurdity, and I once played for a mere twenty minutes and encountered no fewer than three blatant popular culture references worthy of a Sensible Chuckle.
