intro post
it’s probably about time i made a pinned post; i don’t think i’ll ever get around to updating my carrd again.
hi! my name is sylvia. i’m currently twenty years old and use any pronouns. this blog began as a dark academia themed page, and i intend to stick with that sentiment in certain regards. i’m going to branch out in posting, however, to include literature, philosophy, and other hobbies i enjoy.
i’m always open to making friends. you can dm me or send me asks about anything.

[transcript: 1. “god is fucking with my oblivion. if he wants forgiveness, he shouldn’t have given us memory.”
2. “your god comes and he is ordinary and terrible. he confers with the doctors at your kitchen table and tells you to eat….”
3. “our father who art in heaven. our father who art buried in the yard.”
4. “at the trial of god, we will ask: ‘why did you allow all this?’ and the answer will be an echo: ‘why did you allow all this?’”
5. “i don’t believe in god as much as i believe in the interrogation room. i believe in someone placing a loaded gun on a metal table between me and a door. who gets to be god then? will god be the bullet or the table or the door.”
6. “every spy knows this. some say god is where we put our sorrow. god says, which one of you fuckers can get to me first?”/end transcript.]
vi khi nao— fish in exile/leila chatti— portrait of the illness as nightmare/richard siken— snow and dirty rain/ilya kaminsky— a city like a guillotine shivers on its way to the neck/hanif abdurraqib— all the tv shows are about cops/richard siken— war of the foxes

this is just what i’ve noticed from personal experience, but i wish d.a. themed discord servers revolved more around discussion and conversation in line with the way we idolize it in films. for example, i can very rarely see in a d.a. server people having unique, nuanced conversation about a piece of media that hasn’t been beaten to death. that’s not to say it doesn’t happen, but i feel it should happen with more frequency in these servers. they seem more like normal, unthemed friend servers that have a darker aesthetic.
i know the ‘solution’ is to do it myself but no one joins these servers when they do pop up it seems. i’m willing to do it myself for sure if people are interested (leave me a comment or pm if so and i’ll send you an invite but only if enough people are interested).
there’s hardly a point to this post i think just i was reminded of this earlier, and it’s a very significant reason i stopped actively participating in the d.a. community (and a criticism that was very popular months ago as well).
i just feel this community should advocate for nuanced conversation that builds ourselves and our minds up, and for distribution of resources and educational content that makes this more accessible to the masses.

The Furies by Fernanda Eberstadt
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
Circe by Madeline Miller
Ovid's Metamorphoses for Greek mythology enthusiasts
[Remember: Some of these books have dark academia as their major aspect but most of them have dark academia as their minor aspect, and many of them have been put into the list because I got a dark academia kind of vibe from them. Moreover these books have a lot more to offer than just Dark Academia, even if we ignore that aspect, these books are just great pieces of literature. This list is entirely created out of my own reading researches, friendly recommendations, and book recs from reddit, pinterest and the internet in general. If I have gone wrong somewhere or if you want me to add something new, feel free to drop an ask.]

nothing is as tender as annotating your favourite books. it’s like leaving a piece of your heart on the pages for somebody else to find.
