ECSTATTIC FEST. Turf Club, Saint Paul MN, 03/23/14.
We had a great time playing last night at a 10-band festival to celebrate Ecstattic Studio, run by Ali Jafaar from Hollow Boys. Lots of great bands on the bill, including Strange, Naptaker, Hack, Fire In The Northern Firs, and Hollow Boys themselves. We had a pretty choice 10pm time slot, and played a fistful of new tunes to a very congenial crowd. It was my first show with my new silver Thunderbird bass, Kyle’s first show since he recovered from six weeks of mono, and Andrew broke the snares on his snare drum a few songs in, the result of which was a “St Anger snare tone” for the second half of the set. We played “Fake” for the first time ever on stage, and closed with what felt like a really great take on “No Vibes.” Plenty of folks came up and talked to us after the show, most of whom we didn’t know, so it was nice to feel like we’d played a super solid set for a bunch of new faces (although our friends from Bad Bad Hats and Strange Relations made it out, which was really great!). All in all, a fantastic Sunday night. Next show: April 18th at Amsterdam Hall with Pink Mink for Little Man’s record release! - DTB

You may recall that we were annoying y’all a few weeks ago about voting for us in Vita.MN’s Are You Local? contest. Well, we FURY THINGS didn’t win…but we lost really well!! We appear to be the featured loser, in fact! Which is kind of great. We're delighted to be in company with some great bands, such as our buddies in Gloss, and some that were new to us, like Bear The Sound, End Quotes, Magikatz, etc. More importantly, they compared us to SUGAR and seBADoh, which does not suck in any way. Thanks, Vita.MN, and thanks everybody who voted!

FURY THINGS live at the Kitty Cat Klub in Minneapolis, MN, February 19, 2013. Photo by Chris Goyette.
We FURYs had a great show last night at the KCK. Our friends in Gloss invited us onto a great bill with Nature Shows and Youth At Large. Despite the temperature (5 degrees!) and the fact that it was a school night, there was a great crowd of enthusiastic folks who came out to see our sounds. We tried out two brand new songs, one of which is tentatively called “Follow” (although we also refer to it as “1/2/3/Snare!” because of how it starts), and another called “Leave Winter Behind”, which is a sentiment I think most people here in The Twin Cities can get agree with. I was also rocking some brand new pedals, in particular a Moogerfooger FreqBox, which is a kind of hard sync synthesizer pedal, but which really adds some churning fuzz to an already fuzzy fuzz bass. It was a great night out! - Devon.
Next up: Turf Club on March 1st with Ex-Nuns, Rabbit Holes, and Vonnie Kyle.

A fuzz pedal that I painted up to look like a T.A.R.D.I.S. for my friend Quinton. I’m referring to it as the Tarfis. Time And Relative Fuzz In Space

Devon - The Hexagon, Minneapolis 10/19/12 Second show last night at The Hexagon, and my first time there, certainly a good rock and roll club dive bar treat. We were lucky enough to play with the mighty BNLX (whose new tunes sounded so sick) and also Adelyn Rose, a band from Eau Claire. We missed some of their set on our Pizza Lucé finding mission, but I think we were all completely blown away by the songs that we did see. Great songs, great rhythm section, lead singer Addie had a lovely Telecaster with all nice white binding around the sides, love that look. Youth At Large also played, and they were going to town in there when we had to wander off into the night in search of pizzas and tuna melts and such. We went on after BNLX (who bring their full lighting rig and strobes and smoke machine to every gig, thank god), so that was maybe a bit daunting. But the folks that stayed to watch us were very nice afterwards about our set. My guitar amp decided to stop producing sound about two songs in; I had no chunky mid-range. Despite that, I could tell that we were hitting everything together and Kyle was in good voice. In what seems to be a Fury Things tradition, we played a really brand new song that Andrew was nervous about (in this case, "Vapors"); it was definitely the one that won the crowd over, I think, maybe that and "Day" sounded particularly together. We made nice with the other bands, got asked by a construction worker why our amps are so loud (we agreed we had no decent answer to that), and got home around 2 or 3. It was a great time, I know we're all real happy to have been invited. Thanks, BNLX for tossing us on there and to Adelyn Rose for setting the show up!

The Saps - Au Revoir The Dan Lastick/Joe Sexton/Dan Padgett/Ryan Whitacre lineup playing "Au Revoir" on the Small Chicago web series. Saps songs are hooky as hell, short and sharp. Check them out! - Devon.

Sporting my Saps pin at band practice tonight. We hope to maybe play some shows with them before too long here; they are a proper Midwestern pop rock phenomenon. I'll post a link! - Devon.

seBADoh - Rebound/S. Soup (live on 120 Minutes) I remember staying up late and taping this episode in 1994. "Rebound" is really slow but still awesome. Jason Lowenstein's sound is kind of my reference point for Fury Things fuzzbass. - Devon

Blanche Blanche Blanche - Mercantile Rugs More of that Brattleboro, VT forward pop sound I've been listening to all year. This is Zach Phillips and Sarah Smith, a duo who have put out 6ish records in 2ish years. Chris Weisman plays guitar on this track as well, which lends it a more muscular sound than some of BBB's recordings (I personally love the skeletal ones just as much). These chords are mesmerizing. - Devon
