like i kinda get that it's poker, but to me, i think the funny upgrades should be a way to fudge the odds in your favor, but the actual tuning of the game is such that it's too random to even get the chance to fudge things in your favor most times
because the core gameplay is making poker hands (and not the mindgames of actual poker), the dominant strategy is pretty apparent and usually you have to go out of your way or get very specific jokers to change that, and otherwise you just have different flavors of fundamentally pretty similar runs.
and that feeling gets really exacerbated when the randomness of the game is to a point where it isn't a game you can boot up, complete a run, and say "yeah that was cool" and stop. completing a run means immediately re-rolling a run twenty times, probably followed by five unsuccessful runs that fall off for lack of favorable upgrades (or running into The Arm or similarly terrible bosses), before you finally get one run that goes the distance.
i guess what i mean to say is, i don't feel like my decision-making skills actually factor into the end result of my run most of the time. that also means that most of the increased difficulty levels just feel like increasing the inconsistency of a run, rather than taxing my decision-making skills, so they become chores rather than interesting challenges.
i really wish balatro's random elements were more generous because i think once you've unlocked most things, it really quickly becomes rerolling the run on the first ante just to guarantee something good (even on the lowest difficulty with any of the easiest decks)
and then you still might not make it past any of the next antes depending on how nice the game is to you

i really wish balatro's random elements were more generous because i think once you've unlocked most things, it really quickly becomes rerolling the run on the first ante just to guarantee something good (even on the lowest difficulty with any of the easiest decks)
and then you still might not make it past any of the next antes depending on how nice the game is to you

just finished playing specter knight mode in shovel knight. (after read more: a lot of complaining)
i'm not normally a fan of having extra buttons or making inputs more specific but WOW they really needed to do something with those movement mechanics
it's annoying that there's no ground dash slash it's annoying that dash slash completely replaces normal slash it's annoying to misjudge the timing/positioning on a dash slash so you hit the wrong thing or go the wrong direction or hit nothing and die
a lot of bosses shoot projectiles that are also valid dash slash targets. which is fine because it lets you close in on them from a distance, but it also means if they shoot a projectile and you're right next to them you might target the projectile instead and totally whiff
also, i cannot tell you how many times i accidentally wallran. i really feel like it should've been a wall cling where you can tap up to run up
it's so annoying to misjudge a jump where you want to jump as soon as you land, but because you hit a wall right before you land or you were just short of the platform, you get a wallrun and pressing jump will send you away
falling into a hole in the wall becomes really annoying because you can't hug the wall or else you'll run up it, so you have to fall juuust enough and then press forward if you want to comfortably make it inside
it's not like accidentally running up a wall you're trying to go down is (usually) that dangerous, but it's more like... i've never fought with a game so much just to go down before because no other game i've played makes you run up a wall just for falling into it
another minor but significant annoyance: running up onto a platform puts you in the air so long that holding forward overshoots a 2-block wide platform.
the movement mechanics are a real problem because it's not just that being bad at using these mechanics means you play a little clunky or have a little trouble with a specific stage section... poor use of dash slash or walljump just gets you killed even in sections that are supposed to be easy!!
at a casual level, i find that the amount of fun i have when these mechanics work OK is not nearly as much as the amount of frustration i have when they go wrong. partly because it's so easy for an accident to happen that it feels like i'm fighting the game to make them work
also, maybe my memory is just bad, but i don't remember shovel knight, plague knight, or king knight (although i haven't finished his mode yet) having sections that are like "perform this section correctly the 1st time or else it becomes uncompletable until you respawn", but specter knight does have sections like that.
including near the end of the damn race minigame, so if you fuck up that section, guess you gotta do the entire race over!
most of those sections are salvageable with the float item, but i don't think that really makes it acceptable design.

there are a lot of things that i find incredibly annoying about hollow knight (the hitboxes, especially...) but the game would be twice as good if they would just lock the camera or make the camera track you and the boss during boss fights
recently finished engaging in hollow knight hater behavior by getting all of the achievements in the game
