I love coming on here & reading brilliant analysis about characters/show I started watching for fun & have not yet grown the capability to analyze it this closely.
“We accept the love we think we deserve”
I am still for a TopMew reconciliation, but it has to make sense for the characters. For their relationship to remotely have a chance in the future, Mew and Top have to re-enter it as equals. If Top were to just grovel and Mew accept him back, it would forever be unbalanced. This would be hanging over their relationship like an albatross. It would come up again in the future. Mew would be constantly suspicious of Top, slowly becoming a nervous wreck and Top would eventually get tired of being doubted all the time.
One of the books, Mew is seen with in the TopMew library scene is The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, which famously contains this quote "we accept the love we think we deserve."
And Mew deserves more. He deserves to be with someone who doesn't lie to him.
I was just looking up this quote and came across this article. And when I read it, I went no, this is baddd.
Mew is someone who is already in his head. He gets told by Cheum and Boston in episode 2 & 4 to not think too much about his relationship with Top.
At the end of episode 4, we learned that Mew did notice Top not introducing him as his boyfriend in episode 3 and Beam shamelessly coming onto Top, ignoring Mew and perceiving him as being unimportant. But in public, Mew’s poker face was up.
In episode 5, we finally see into this notoriously private character and what we found were his insecurities and self-doubt. He's insecure when Top receives male attention and he's insecure of people looking at them and questioning why they are together.
During the blind dining experience date, he finally decides to stop thinking so much and just feel, having an epiphany moment that he already loves Top. But even after that realization and thinking he is now ready for the next physical step in their relationship, he still needs external validation from Boston to confirm his instincts. He doesn't trust his own judgement alone.
Mew left his bubble and he got his heart broken.
And this opinion will probably send me to TopMew jail, but Mew needs to experience more than Top in order for their reunion to be equitable. He would never know if it was just because he imprinted on Top because Top was his first boyfriend and first lover. So I do think Mew should date other people and/or sleep with other people before they find their way back together.
P.S. A self-discovery phase could also work!
