many of the changes made in the show removed so many characters' depth but one thing that i did like is the inclusion of iroh's past. we rarely got confronted with his past cruelty and lack of humanity and it being the very first scene of the show was imo a good decision.
and when the earthbender confronts him, "he was nineteen" !!
as a kid especially, iroh is seen and portrayed to be this silly, wise old man that everyone loves, but after the netflix show you're met with the fact that oh! he used to be a genocidal maniac responsible for wiping out an entire race of people and in this current political climate it definitely hits .. more. he's definitely changed a lot and is still a silly wise old man to many, but i'd say the show added to his character's complexity and raises questions for us viewers which i wish was the case for the other characters too
