When I first saw the episode “Hexley Hall”, I immediately realized that Grimtrix the Good looked just like King Garrick. It really disappointed me that Grimtrix turned out to be evil later in the episode. To this day, I can’t help but wonder if Garrick and Grimtrix are related. If they were, then Hugo wouldn’t be too happy to be related to someone evil. Too bad we didn’t get to see more of Grim after “Day of the Sorcerers”

Have any of you guys noticed that Hugo is the only guy on “Sofia the First” with noticeable eyelashes? They’re hard to see from afar, but they’re easier to see when you see his face up close. I guess the animators thought it would make him look more adorable that way, and they would be right. I’m just gonna assume that he got those eyelashes from his mom.

Stuff I Still Want From Sofia the First
King Magnus and Rudistan Episode: Rudistan is in a crisis since all of King Magnus’ staff have quit. Lesson about being a good boss, dangers of being impractical, not appreciating employees. Greylock and Slickwell redemption?
Overworking Episode: Sofia has princess duties, a call from the library, and a protector mission all on the same day. Lesson about having it all, but not all at once. Dangers of multitasking, overworking yourself.
They could also make some episodes from storybooks: Pearl the unicorn, Lucinda’s rabbit Hexie, Hildegard being turned into a mouse, Vivian’s house for Christmas (not Wassailia).
Just other questions I want answered, worked into other episodes or their own stand alones: -Birk Balthasar’s fate (pretty sure being a sailor he was lost at sea, but would like confirmation) -Roland’s first wife, the twin’s mother, and her fate (also think she’s dead, but need that confirmed. It doesn’t make sense that she and Birk are never mentioned. Modern families being what they are, pretending the bioparent never existed isn’t helpful to kids ((excepting if the parent was a deadbeat but Disney just likes to have them dead))) -Why Baileywick dislikes Cedric -How Goodwyn and Winifred got together -Cedric quits being Royal Sorcerer to become Headmaster of Hexley Hall (don’t stay in a toxic job) -Sofia decides to go to Hexley Hall to become a sorceress (I still feel this makes the most sense storywise given Sofia’s relationship with magic - I thought that her obvious third thing in the School Fair episode) -More amulet related bits. Again, it’s getting back to the show’s “roots” in a sense. The Amulet of Avalor is supposed to be so powerful but it’s not utilized enough. Pocahontas is due an episode, and I guess Moana now too (tho not necessary).  -Ivy’s sister and her kingdom. -Maybe Sofia is called by the amulet to a problem when Tilly wore the amulet? Or called to a point in the future where we get a glimpse into Sofia’s own fate. Something sweet like she helps her own grandchild or step-niece.  -Sofia revealing the amulet’s powers to her family either by telling them herself or having Cedric tell on her for her own safety (like about to run off on another dangerous mission). Maybe he even gets in trouble again for keeping the secret from her parents. -Sofia and Miranda’s life in Dunwiddie village. The pilot made it seem like after Roland and Miranda met he told her to go home and get her things cuz they were getting hitched immediately.  -Cedric without his robe. (I’d also like a different outfit, but I dare not dream too big) -Desmond’s kingdom and which country it’s based on (holds true for other princes/princesses) -Magical rules (as it seems stf really skimps on this - ideally I’d want a Cedric spin-off that focuses more on the magic in the stf/eoa magic set in Cedric’s early teens/early evil days) -Cordelia’s kingdom and husband/Calista’s daddy (she doesn’t live in Enchancia but does live in a castle… so is she a royal sorceress somewhere else or independant?)

It’s not that revolutionary for a children’s show. Nickelodeon’s The Rugrats had an episode where Chucky’s pet rollie pollie (I wish I was more adult to know what they’re really called, but it’s a bug.) died, and in the episode Chucky had to learn to cope with its loss. I remember distinctly watching as a child and that was more than 25 years ago (I’m old). And the same channel’s Hey Arnold also had a comedic approach on a pet dying when Arnold accidentally killed Eugene’s goldfish with a yo-yo.
I MEAN IT’S DISNEY
Let us not forget all the mothers/parents they’ve killed off in all the major movies. As a parent, I’m perfectly fine with the subject being in a new show like Fancy Nancy.
Hold on! Death is going to be a discussion on Disney Junior next month with Fancy Nancy!
“Au Revoir, Jean-Claude” – After the family goldfish dies, Nancy must confront her feelings of loss.
That’s great! But definitely a what the hell moment for sure.

Knowing what Roland’s wish was, and its aftermath, really puts this bit of dialogue in a whole new light.

I have such mixed feelings for this movie. At the very least at least Sofia gets a proper finale unlike many other kid shows. I just hope we can see/hear cameos of her in Elena of Avalor.

Birk and Roland’s previous wife ?
Other than Roland’s ‘s wish , one of the biggest mysteries that people want to know about Sofia the first is what happened to the Biological parents before Miranda and Roland got married. The three most likely outcomes are either they died , they left or they went missing ?
Questions about the Biological parents have been brought to Craig’s attention before but he has not yet revealed what has happened to them . He may however reveal what happened to them one day just not right now. ( I believe he had a tweet saying he would do so after the show ends but I couldn’t find it )
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While we don’t know their fates just yet , we have gotten some information about them through twitter.
With Sofia’s biological dad , Birk came from the kingdom of Freezenberg and met Miranda who came from the kingdom of Galdiz. Together they moved to Enchanica and had Sofia as their daughter. At some point though , Birk was no longer with Miranda and Sofia and they were left running the shoe shop together in the Village of Dunwiddie.
Some tweets about Birk have mentioned that Birk is a sailor, that his been gone for a while and that he looks like Sofia but his personality is not as much like hers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So overall , all we know about him is
His name is Birk Balthazar
He came from the Kingdom of Freezenberg
He is a Sailor
He is not a Wizard
His daughter takes after his looks but when it comes to his personality , not as much.
His been gone for a while
With Roland’s previous wife all we know about her is that she was the previous Queen before Miranda and that her and Roland’s marriage was not an arranged one.
Tumblr media
That’s pretty much all we know about her. Unlike Birk she doesn’t even have an official name :/
So that’s all the official information we have about them so far but is there any clues in the actual show ? Now , down below is just my own interpretation that I’ve come too from watching the series so take it with a grain of salt but lets start of with Birk.
In the episode “The Princess stays in the picture” in season 2 , Sofia reveals she started to sail at the age of four and that she knows how to sail around big waves.
Tumblr media
It was presumed that Miranda taught Sofia but in the episode “Her Royal Spyness” in season 3 , its revealed that Miranda had been taking sailing lessons to surprise King Roland with a sailing trip.
So this indicates that Miranda may have not known how to sail until this particular episode meaning someone else must have taught Sofia instead. When this was brought to Craig’s attention, he was a little secretive about it.
Tumblr media
So if Birk was a sailor , and Miranda didn’t teach Sofia how to sail then its very likely that Birk taught her , meaning he was still in Sofia’s life when she was at the age of four.
Now, that’s not to say Sofia couldn’t have learnt how to sail in her buttercup troop by Miss Hanshaw but lets just say it was Birk who taught her.
If he was around when she was four but wasn’t around when she was 8 then somewhere in between the ages of 5, 6 and 7 , is when Birk somehow wasn’t in the picture anymore.
For me I have a feeling it was when Sofia was of the age of  5. During the song in “Dad’s and daughters day” Sofia has no idea what to sing about when it gets to her turn and runs of upset.
“When I was five , my dad and I , Uh… uh ………uh.” – Sofia
Tumblr media
Now obviously Roland wasn’t her dad back then so Sofia wouldn’t have had anything memorable about them both to sing about when she was five , so no wonder it was difficult and upsetting for her to sing about. But I feel like this moment may have been more upsetting for Sofia because she would have had to think about herself being five at a time where Birk wasn’t around anymore.
If she was given the verse about being four I don’t think it would have been as upsetting for her because when she was four this was the age Birk taught her how to sail but for some reason the writer’s gave her the verse of being five ? This was probably because she didn’t have a Dad at all back then.
Another reason I think he wasn’t around anymore after Sofia was four is because in the flash back song “Me and my Mom” in the episode “Mom’s the word” she looks a tad younger compared to her 8 year old self where she’s at a age when it was just her and her mum and no one else.
So I don’t think Sofia is 4 or less in the flash back song if Birk was around to teach her how to sail.
Tumblr media
With Roland’s previous wife , like other fans of the show I think we’ve actually seen her in one of the portraits around the castle. She’s a woman with a fan with golden hair standing next to Roland who has a moustache.
She’s seen on the stair case wall in Once upon a princess , The Baker King and The Emerald key

In the Throne room in the curse of princess Ivy and Day of the sorcerer’s

In random hall ways in the castle in A royal mess , The baker King and In Cedric we trust

And in the attic in the Ghostly Gala

So this is all the information I could really gather about them. If anyone wants to share their thoughts on what they think happened to both of them then feel free :) Its always interesting hearing people’s headcannons/theories on things like this :)
But if you want to know what I think , I believe Birk left when Sofia was five and has been gone for a while because he wanted a life of sailing again where he could go on adventures and go exploring. When Craig said Sofia has got not as much of his personality , I think he had a bit of a adventure side which Sofia inherited but the rest of his personality is pretty much the opposite to hers. I also think Sofia was pretty okay with it just being her and her mum after he left and was pretty content on it just being the two of them. And while it does take Sofia a while to call Roland her dad , I personally feel like she prefers Roland as a dad than Birk but that’s just me.
As for Roland’s previous wife I personally think she died. Maybe even in child birth. Sadly, its quite traditional for Disney to kill of Mothers and if this really is her in all these portraits then I don’t think Roland and her had a divorce or had a bad relationship if he has her portrait all over the castle. But those are just my thoughts :)
Hopefully we do actually find out one day :)
