Love Day Surprise
Tumblr media
Summary: The reader is bummed out on Valentine’s Day because it’s a reminder of the life she will never have. Dean tries to help her feel better by throwing a Valentine’s Day movie night at the bunker.
Pairings: Dean x Reader
Warnings: Mild angst, lots of fluff.
Word Count: 2,640+
A/N: Happy Almost Valentine’s Day! If I have time  over the next few weeks, I’ll post some other Valentine’s oneshots about other characters.
I walked towards the kitchen following the smell of bacon wafting through the halls. I smiled when I found Sam sitting at the table, reading something on his laptop, and Dean standing over the stove cooking.
“Morning (Y/N),” Sam mumbled with his head still buried in his screen.
Dean turned toward me and smiled, “Hey sunshine, Happy Love Day!” Mornings were not my favorite, but these two could always get a smile out of me, even if I felt like a zombie.
“Happy Valentine’s Day to all of us single people,” I said. Sam laughed and Dean turned back to the pancakes.
I sat down next to Sam and yawned, stretching my arms up towards the ceiling. Dean always looked so happy when he was cooking. It was funny to watch him. He would sometimes hum his favorite rock songs without even realizing it. Today he was humming AC/DC as he poured the pancake batter.
“Need some help rockstar?”I teased.
“Nah groupie I’ve got this covered” Dean quipped, shooting me an ‘I’m the funniest person ever’ look. I shrugged, smirking at Dean’s comment, as I poured myself a glass of milk. Like I said, they could always get me to smile.
A few minutes later Dean brought over a steaming plate of bacon and heart shaped pancakes. Sam finally looked over his screen to see what Dean had brought to the table.
“Hearts huh?” Sam raised his eyebrows at Dean.
“It’s Love Day Sammy, I couldn’t resist.” Dean sat down across from me and began to fill up his plate. Sam and I soon followed, although Sam avoided the bacon.
When I was finished I took my plate to the next room over where the sink and dishwater were located. The boys were still busy stuffing their faces. I turned on the water in the sink and watched as it swirled around. Valentine’s Day always seemed like a bust for hunters. Sure you could always pick up someone at a bar, but having someone to call your Valentine was basically unheard of. That meant no boxes of chocolate, no cute cards, and no flowers. I knew living the life of a hunter meant romance was unlikely, but that never made it suck any less.
“What’s on your mind groupie?” I jumped and dropped my plate in the sink with a loud clattering sound. Dean had crept up behind me while I was lost in thought.
“Oh, uh, nothing.” I stammered, picking up the plate and scrubbing off the last bit of grease.
“You practically just jumped out of your skin, clearly it’s not nothing. But if you don’t want to talk about it that’s fine.”
“It’s just your average hunter angst, don’t worry about it” I shrugged, taking my dish over to the dish washer.
I heard Dean turn on the sink behind me so he could rinse his dishes. “Come on this is one of the best days of the year, cheer up a little bit.” When I finished loading my dish I went and leaned against the doorframe. I wasn’t sure what so say so I just watched as he finished rinsing his dishes.
Finally I gained the courage to speak. “Yeah it’s nice if you have someone to spend time with.” I watched Dean’s back tense slightly at my words. He shut off the sink and turned to face me.
“We can always go to the bar later tonight. I’m sure there will be someone there who would love to spend time with you on Valentine’s Day.” His words came out slow and nonchalant.
“Dean that’s not what I meant. I know this job doesn’t compliment romance, but sometimes I wish I had someone special. Valentine’s Day is just a reminder of the life I’ll never have.”
Dean walked over to me and stood by my side. He placed his hand on my shoulder and I looked up at him. “I tell you what. I’m gonna head to the store. I will pick up some good food for dinner and some snacks. We’ll force Sammy to watch a chick flick with us. It will be a great! That way you’ll have someone to spend Valentine’s Day with.” He smiled and I couldn’t help but smile too.
“Thanks Dean, you’re the best.” He patted my shoulder and walked out of the room. I heard him, call out to Sam letting him know he was headed to the store.
After loading Dean’s dishes into the dishwasher I went to join Sam in the library. Sam was taking a book off one of the shelves and blew a cloud of dust from it. He waved the dust out of his face and coughed.
“What is that?” I asked.
“It’s a history of vampires. I decided to brush up on some lore since we don’t have a case at the moment.” Sam waved the book so I could see the cover.
“Do you have any recommendations for me?” I asked staring at the overwhelming amount of bookshelves. Sam walked up to a shelf in the far corner of the room and grabbed a book.
“This one is on mermaids. We haven’t encountered one yet and we aren’t sure if they exist, but it should make for an interesting read.”
“Cool thanks.” We both picked a chair and sat down. We read in silence for a while, until I heard Sam’s book shut. At first I kept reading but when he sat there not doing anything for a while I peeked over my book. “You finished?” I asked.
“No, I was just thinking.” Sam replied.
“About?”
Sam hesitated for a moment then cleared his throat. “Well I don’t understand what’s going on with Dean. He never wants to stay in on Valentine’s Day. Has he said anything to you?”
“Oh Dean’s just being nice. He went to the store to grab stuff for a movie night. I was upset earlier, because Valentine’s Day was making me feel lonely. He volunteered you and himself to spend time with me tonight so I wouldn’t feel alone.”
Sam nodded to show he understood the feeling. “Being a hunter is brutal on relationships.” We went back to reading after that, until Dean came home. We heard the bunker door open and Dean sprinting down the stairs.
“(Y/N), Sammy, I’m back!” Dean called out.
“We’re in the library Dean,” I hollered back.
Dean strolled in with one arm behind his back and the other carrying a grocery bag. He had a mischievous grin spread across his face and he couldn’t seem to keep still. Dean set down the bag and walked towards me, still carrying something behind him.
“What are you doing Winchester?”
“I was at the store grabbing the stuff for our stay-at-home party and I saw these and figured why not.” He pulled a bouquet of red roses from behind his back and held them out to me. “Since hunters don’t usually get gifts for Valentine’s Day I figured you might enjoy flowers for once.” I reached up and took them in disbelief. My eyes got a little watery, I couldn’t help it, this was one of the nicest gestures someone had ever done for me. I stood up and wiped a tear away from my face.
“Come here.” I opened my arms and Dean met me in an embrace. “This is awesome Dean, thank you. I’m going to go put these in some water.” I let go and sprinted towards the kitchen.
Of course we didn’t have any vases in the bunker so I grabbed an empty whiskey bottle off the counter. I rinsed it out and put the water and roses inside. I took them into the TV room for some seasonal décor for our party tonight. I stared at them for a moment, soaking in the beautiful petals and the lovely aroma. Dean always knew how to bring my spirits up.
                                                        ***
Around seven I heard a knock on my door. I had been busy reading the book Sam recommended to me, waiting for the party to start. I hadn’t realized how late it was until I looked at the clock on my bedside table. “Come in.”
The door cracked open and Dean peeked his head inside. “Dinner is on the table. Are you ready to party it up?”
“You know it. I’ll be down in a minute.” Dean gave me a thumbs up and shut the door behind him as he left. I hopped up and went over to my closet. I had been wearing a worn out t-shirt all day and decided to get a little dressed up. It was Valentine’s Day after all, or at least that’s why I told myself I was doing it.
The roses Dean got me had my mind spinning. I had feelings for Dean, but I pushed them down because I didn’t want to complicate the life I had here. The Winchester’s had been kind enough to take me in when I was on the run from a nest of vampires. After we teamed up to gank that nest, the Winchesters said I could stay if I wanted. Ever since then we lived and hunted together. Telling Dean how I feel could ruin everything and I wasn’t willing to risk it. Although he did buy me flowers, and was willing to stay in on his favorite day of the year…for me. My mind kept going over the day’s events, trying simultaneously to convince me that he felt the same and that he did not feel the same.
I grabbed a blouse out of my closet. It still had the tags on it. I bought it for hunts when I would have to pretend to be some kind of professional figure. It was silky and red like the roses Dean bought for me. I smiled as I looked at myself in the mirror. It fit perfectly and was appropriate for the holiday. I paired it with some cute black jeans and headed out my door.
I met Sam and Dean at the dining table. Both their eyes widened at the sight of me in my new outfit. “What? People usually get dressed up for Valentine’s Day, especially if they’re attending a party.” I stated as I took my place next to Sam and across from Dean.
“It looks nice.” Sam said.
“Thanks Sam.” I smiled. I turned to look at Dean. Our eyes met for a moment before he looked away.
“In honor of this special event, may I present you grilled steak and twice-baked potatoes.” Dean lifted tin foil off the dishes, displaying the delicious meal.
We ate, joked, and laughed just like we always did when we had dinner together. However, I could feel something different in the air. I caught Dean gazing at me a few times. His face would get a slight flush of red each time we made eye contact.
After dinner we made our way into the TV room. I plopped down on the couch and Sam soon followed. Dean threw some frilly heart shaped boxes on the table from the grocery bag he had stashed away. He looked like a child with how excited he was. He sat down next to Sam and flipped on the TV.
“What will it be? Do we want to make this a real Valentine’s party and watch some kind of chick flick, or should we just stick to our usual Sci-Fi picks?” Dean asked.
“You already promised me a chick flick,” I reminded him. Sam rolled his eyes, even though I knew he secretly loved romance movies. I couldn’t quite read Dean’s facial expression, but I think he was excited?
“Alright, take your pick (Y/N).” Dean passed the remote to me then turned off the lights. I picked a classic eighties romance, I had seen many times before. I wanted to watch the boys reactions when something good would happen and watch their shock when something dramatic would happen. As I predicted Sam was invested the whole time. Dean acted like he didn’t care for about the first half of the movie, but towards the end he was on the edge of his seat with a box of chocolates in his lap. I couldn’t help but feel happy watching the two of them. Call it luck or fate, but this was our little family.
The movie ended and the credits began to roll leaving the room in dim glow.  Sam stood up leaving an empty space between Dean and me. “I’m going to bed, it’s getting late.”
“Alright grandpa see you tomorrow.” Dean teased. Sam ignored Dean and made his way out of the room.
“Night Sam!” I hollered after him.
“Night (Y/N).” Sam called back.
I leaned back and watched the TV lights flicker across the roses on the table. This was the best Valentine’s Day in a long time.
“How’s that ‘hunter’s angst’ going?” Dean’s voice broke my train of thought.
“I think it’s safe to say it’s been remedied thanks to you. I really appreciate all this Dean.” I motioned around the room, towards the roses and chocolates.
“What can I say? I am the master of Valentine’s Day.” Dean smiled.
“Oh yeah Casanova you sure are.” I rolled my eyes, he could be so ridiculous sometimes. We sat there in silence for a moment soaking in the happiness that filled the room. My mind began to ponder my conversation with Sam in the library. “So why didn’t you want to go out tonight? This is your favorite night of the year.”
“Well….” Dean paused, licking his lips. “I may sound like Sammy but I think I’m getting too old for that lifestyle. Barhopping and finding some girl who I’ll never see again isn’t what I want anymore.” My mind swirled with his words. I didn’t want to get ahead of myself. Could he be implying what I thought he was implying? I had kept my feelings for Dean hidden the best I could. I was too afraid to tell him since he was one of my best friends. I never wanted to jeopardize the relationship I had with him. But if he felt the same then maybe, just maybe, we could make this work. He seemed lost in thought staring at the floor. I moved closer to him, so we were sitting next to each other.
“What do you want Winchester?” I elbowed his side, which made him smile. “You’ve already got everything you need.” I pointed at the box of chocolates in his lap. He laughed and threw the box on the table next to my makeshift vase, then turned to face me.
“You know you’re right, I do have everything I need,” Dean placed his hand on mine. It felt like electricity ran up my arm and through my entire body. “I’ve got a beautiful woman, who is also my best friend, by my side every day. I really hope I’m not going to mess anything up by saying this because I would hate to lose you, but –” I cut him off with a kiss. Dean seemed shocked at first and to be honest so was I. This had all happened so fast. I never expected Dean to feel the same way about me. After the initial shock, our lips softened into a tender kiss. Dean’s hand traveled from my hand to my waist, pulling me in close.
After a moment I gently broke the kiss placing my forehead on his. “Happy Valentine’s Day Dean.” I smiled.
“Happy Valentine’s Day (Y/N).” Dean said before placing a kiss on the top of my head. He wrapped his arm around me and we sat there enjoying each other’s company, and the fact that we both lifted the secret of our affection for one another off our shoulders.

I gasped in disbelief. In my hands were my very own sheets! I was in my own bed, in my own room, in the bunker. My face was already wet with tears from begging to return home. Now my face flooded with tears of joy, knowing that I had an opportunity to make amends with my loved ones. Peace filled my heart as I realized that, in the end, my sister still looked out for me. Now it was my turn to follow her advice and live a better life. Hopefully along with that I could free her from this world and allow her spirit to move on. But for today, I needed to spend Christmas with my family.
“Thank you sis,” I whispered. Wiping away my tears, I got up excited for the day. I picked up my phone from my bedside table and rushed to my dresser. My phone was once again on, as if I had never turned it off in the first place. It was 6:00am. Much earlier than I would normally wake up, but it was Christmas! I quickly changed into my some cozy pajamas, used the bathroom, and ran to the kitchen.
I hooked up my phone to the speaker and allowed Frank Sinatra’s “Jingle Bells” to echo as I went into a cooking frenzy. I began to pile up waffles, eggs, and bacon all while dancing around the kitchen. The bunker was large enough that I figured the boys wouldn’t hear me until they got up for the day. I was going to let them sleep a while longer until everything was finished.
I went to the fridge and grabbed a pile of oranges, considering if I wanted to cut them up or if I wanted to make fresh orange juice. As I was about to lift my haul out of the fridge I heard someone enter the room.
“(Y/N)?” Dean asked in a sleepy voice, as he leaned against the doorframe rubbing his eyes. I nearly dropped the oranges when I heard him, but quickly shoved them on the counter and closed the fridge with my good leg.
“Dean! Merry Christmas!” I exclaimed. “Go ahead and sit down. Breakfast is almost ready.” Dean was double confused. Not only was I acting completely different from yesterday but I also wished him a ‘Merry Christmas’. He slowly walked to the table and sat down. I walked the large stack of waffles, eggs, and bacon, over to him. “Orange juice will be up in a few,” I smiled. Dean didn’t realize how much relief it brought me to have him in the room.
“Why are you up so early?” Dean mumbled, dragging a few waffles onto his plate.
“I couldn’t sleep in anymore” I laughed, looking over my shoulder. Dean furrowed his brow, then he shrugged and began eating his breakfast. The food helped him perk up a little bit, which made me smile. Once I was done with the orange juice, I brought the pitcher and some glasses to the table. Dean gladly poured himself some and guzzled it down. “Well, I better go wake up Sam so he can eat too,” I mentioned as I headed for the door to the hallway.
“Wait,” Dean called, getting up and following behind me. “We’ll do it together!” He chuckled. At first I thought Dean would start sprinting to get his brother, but he calmly walked beside me. As we made our way towards Sam’s room, the Christmas tunes from the kitchen faded. The only sound that remained was Dean and I’s feet pattering on the bunker floor.
We arrived at room 21 and Dean held up his hand and mouthed 1-2-3 while counting down with his fingers. At three we opened the door and yelled in unison, “Merry Christmas!” Sam sat up quickly, scared at first. I could tell that under the pillow he was grasping his gun. He relaxed soon after that and began to laugh.
“I thought we were going to sleep in?” He asked looking at us in amazement. Both Dean and I shrugged.
“We couldn’t sleep in any longer” We both said, laughing as we echoed each other’s thoughts.
“(Y/N) made us breakfast so get to the kitchen quick! We need to open presents soon!” and with that Dean and I ran the short sprint from Sam’s room back to the kitchen. My leg hurt a little bit but I didn’t care, it was fun to finally run with Dean again.
Once we reached the kitchen, we began laughing in the doorway like little kids. Finally we calmed down a bit and stood up straight. I took a step back into the kitchen, when Dean opened his arms and wrapped them around me before I could go any further.
“Merry Christmas (Y/N). Thank you for breakfast.” His arms felt safe and I felt myself relax for the first time in months. Last night’s experiences taught me a lot, but it had also been stressful. On top of that, this year had been one big mess. But this moment in Dean’s arms made everything feel at ease. I wrapped my arms around him and held him tight.
“Thank you Dean, for everything you do.” I felt a few tears leave my eyes and fall onto Dean’s shirt. I tried to stop myself. I wanted this to be a happy Christmas. I didn’t want to dump everything on the Winchester’s now. I could tell them about my night later. Of course, Dean noticed anyway and held me back slightly to look at me.
“Hey what’s the matter?” I looked up at Dean and tried to smile. It didn’t work. All my feelings came out at once.
“I’m so sorry Dean,” I cried “I’m sorry for pushing you away. I’m sorry for being snappy with you and Sam. I’m sorry for not saying thank you enough.” Dean pulled me into his chest again, and swayed side to side in an attempt to rock me. He placed his right hand on the back of my head to further comfort me.
“Shh sweetheart, it’s okay. It’s okay.” Just then Sam walked up to us.
“Is everything okay?” He asked.
“Get in here” I motioned for Sam to join Dean in I in our hug. Sam raised his eyebrow, before putting his long arms around us. “Sam, I’m sorry for how I’ve been acting lately. I hope you both know how much I care about you. You’re my family and you deserve to be taken care of. I’m sorry I didn’t let you take care of me.”
“We’ve all been there (Y/N). We’re just glad that you decided to spend Christmas with us.” Sam said squeezing us tighter. After that the hug broke up and I wiped my eyes. I smiled at the boys, at my family. I was so lucky to have them.
I sat down with Sam and we devoured our breakfast together. I’m probably biased, but it was delicious if I say so myself. Dean sat with us and snuck a few more pieces of bacon. It was strange how these small moments were starting to open my eyes to everything I shut out of my life. Now I was busy soaking every moment in.
“Present time!” Dean practically shouted once Sam was done eating.
“Oof about that…” I realized immediately that I didn’t have anything for Sam or Dean. Thanks to my hyper focus on working cases I completely spaced it. “Your Christmas presents are going to be late. I definitely forgot to get gifts for anyone,” I sheepishly admitted.
“Don’t worry (Y/N), we know you’ve been under a lot of stress,” Sam replied.
“And besides you already do so much for us,” Dean chimed in.
“Well still expect gifts, they just won’t be under the tree today,” I laughed. Even though I joked with them, I was grateful for their understanding nature.  “Now before we open presents who is helping me with dishes?”
“I’ve got it!” Dean shot up grabbing empty plates from the table. Sam stood up as well.
“I’ll go plug in the tree,” Sam decided and made his way out of the kitchen. I grabbed more of the dishes and brought them over to Dean.
“I’ll wash, you dry?” Dean asked.
“Sounds good to me!” Our teamwork made the dishes go quickly. Dean and I didn’t say much but we did exchange glances with one another. He was probably still concerned about me. We’d had our brief moment of apologies and forgiveness, but Dean knew me well enough to know there was more going on. Luckily for me he didn’t ask so I didn’t share. I wouldn’t keep it to myself for too long, I just wanted to wait until our festivities were over.
Once the dishes were done Dean and I hurried to join Sam. We found him sitting by the tree, leaning back on his hands. His eyes were closed probably due to all the food he ate. He was in a straight up food coma. Dean plopped down next to Sam, waking him slightly. I sat down next to Dean, and looked up at the beautiful tree they had decorated. I felt a tear fall onto my cheek, but quickly wiped it away before either of them noticed. The lights cast a warm glow over the room and mirrored the warm feelings in my heart, which continued to grow with each moment I spent with my family.
Opening presents went by faster than expected, probably because of our excitement. Dean gave Sam a vegetarian cookbook, along with a snarky comment about how if Sam wasn’t going to eat meat he at least had to eat stuff besides salads. Both Sam and I knew that Dean had actually put a lot of thought into this gift. Sam and I smiled at each other acknowledging that fact. Sam got Dean a brand new bathrobe. He gasped when he touched it and commented on how soft it was. Sam handed me my gift which I opened up to find a 5,000 piece puzzle. I smiled as I imagined all of us sitting around the TV, watching a Christmas movie and putting the puzzle together. Finally, Dean passed over the thin box I had seen him staring at last night when the Ghost of Christmas Present had brought me out of my room. I opened it to find the most beautifully crafted dagger I had ever seen. The blade had beautiful swirls engraved into it, the hilt had black leather around it for better grip, and at the very end of the dagger was a small sapphire. The stone glimmered in the Christmas tree lighting making blue dance on the wall.
“Dean…” I was speechless.
“The best part is, it’s silver plated,” Dean pointed at the blade. I looked the weapon over in awe. This was such a thoughtful gift. There was something familiar about it as well. As I sat there for a moment I realized where I had seen it before. The Ghost of Christmas Future came to my mind. The memory of seeing Dean crying in front of my pyre came rushing back. As the memory played out, I remembered him throwing something into the fire. This is what Dean threw in. These thoughts didn’t fill me with dread though. I knew that my path was different now. This dagger now meant protection and life, not depression and death. Dean really did know me better than anyone. He was and always would be my protector. He wanted to make sure he was with me even when he wasn’t actually with me.
After we were done opening presents Sam and Dean continued chatting while I started picking up the wrapping paper strewn across the floor. Watching Dean and Sam smile and laugh with each other was one of my favorite things. I tried my best not to interrupt these sweet moments between the two of them. In an effort to not disturb them, I picked up my gifts along with the trash and headed down the hallway. My first stop was to take out the garbage, grabbing the trash from the kitchen as well. Once I was back inside, I wiped off the kitchen counter so Dean would have a clean surface to cook Christmas dinner. Finally I made my way down to my room to drop off my gifts. After putting my puzzle on my desk I took my dagger with me and sat on my bed. I gently passed the dagger between both my hands, admiring its beauty. I was going to have to find a gift just as thoughtful for Dean.
I sat there pondering what to get him for a few minutes when I heard a knock on my door. “Come in,” I called. Dean entered my room and stood just inside the door with his hands in his pockets. I smiled at him and set my dagger on my bedside table.
“So what did you think about your gift?” Dean questioned.
“I would love anything you got me, but this gift takes the cake. I love it! You know me almost too well Winchester.” I teased, standing up and walking over to him.
“I guess I just really care about you or something” Dean tried to say this in his joking voice, but I could hear something softer underneath it. A gust of cold air suddenly brushed against my arms and across my face. For a brief moment I thought I was reacting to Dean’s words, but shortly realized it was something else. I followed the gust and looked up at the ceiling. Hanging right where The Ghost of Christmas Present had left it, was a strand of mistletoe. I looked back at Dean, and felt all my feelings for him come crashing in.
He truly was my best friend. He knew me like the back of his hand. He saved me from witches and burning buildings, he nursed me back to health, he bought me thoughtful gifts, and he didn’t give up on me. Then it really hit me. While the spirits visiting me was an overall enlightening experience, filled with lessons from various parts of my life, there was one consistency. It was Dean. I realized Dean was, and would always be, the answer. My heart pounded in my chest, knowing what I had to do next.
“I really care about you too Dean,” Dean smiled at this. “But I feel like I haven’t made that clear enough. I probably should.” I took a step closer to him and looked up once more. This time Dean followed suit. When Dean saw the mistletoe hanging there his eyes grew wide and he slowly looked back down at me. Dean’s face softened as our eyes met. I smiled at him and started to lean in. Of course I was a little nervous, there was still a chance he could reject me. But everything in this moment felt right. Dean met me halfway, catching me off guard. His lips on mine took my breath away. The kiss started off soft, but grew in passion. He wrapped his arms around my waist and I put my hands around his neck, placing my hands in his hair. After a few kisses like this we placed our foreheads on each other’s and held each other close. The world around us seemed to melt away.
“Merry Christmas Dean,” I whispered. Dean gave me a peck on the lips.
“Merry Christmas (Y/N)”
After this everything fell into place. Was our life perfect? Of course not, we were hunters. We would never live a simple life in a little house, but we had a home and we had each other.
That evening we shared a wonderful Christmas dinner together, filled with laughter and yummy food. To end the night, we sat in front of the T.V. watching Christmas movies while putting together my new puzzle. Dean would occasionally reach over and squeeze my hand. A simple but meaningful gesture.
The following day I decided to share my Christmas Eve ghostly encounters with Sam and Dean. I didn’t share every detail. Some things were simply too private, but they knew the gist of it. They vowed to help me avenge my sister and reassured me that she could pass on safely before she turned into a vengeful spirit. If anyone could figure out an impossible supernatural problem, it was Sam and Dean.
Once I finished telling them about my sister, Sam quickly headed for the library while simultaneously using his phone to call Rowena. This left Dean and I sitting next to each other. The butterflies in my stomach hadn’t gone away since yesterday. I looked over at him, taking in his features. A few moments later I reached and grasped his hand. Dean looked at me kindly.
“I’m sorry about your sister sweetheart. I’ll do whatever it takes to help you set her free.”
“Thanks Dean. You and Sam helping means a lot. I’m grateful you have my back.”
“Always and forever,” Dean smiled, looking away for a moment.
“I love you,” the words shocked me as they escaped my lips. Of course he already knew this statement to be true. We were best friends. But I had never uttered it out loud before, and our circumstances had changed slightly now that we had kissed. Dean turned to me again, this time his eyes watery. This was all the confirmation I needed to know he felt the same. I echoed his words, “Always and forever.”
Dean reached over and embraced me. I then draped my arms around him, pulling him closer. As we held each other, peace washed over me. Whatever trouble was ahead of us felt minuscule now that we had each other.
“I love you too.”

Hey ya’ll
I want to apologize for my absence. I would also like to apologize that A Supernatural Christmas Carol (Chapter 5) is not out yet. I tried very hard but the universe was against me between family stuff, illness that took forever to get over, and my power going out. All these things messed with my writing flow. For reals this time, the fic should be up sometime tonight. Thank you for being understanding. ❤️

The air around me felt thick and heavy like it had in the diner that day, when fire surrounded me. I did my best to breath normally, but to no avail. Even though the figure was now close enough for me to touch, I did not dare. The darkness that surrounded it, shrouded everything about its identity. The only thing I could make out was its hands, which barely peaked out from its flowing sleeves. The specter did not speak. I waited, but the silence was causing my anxiety to get worse. I decided to speak up.
“I’ve visited the past and the present, are you here to help me see the future?” The spirit did not answer me, rather it lifted its hand and pointed deeper into the woods. I followed the eerie gesture with my eyes, only to find a light in the distance.
“Is that the way to my next lesson?” I asked, trying to look the spirit in the eyes, even though no eyes could be seen. “I’ve learned a lot tonight about who I am and what I need to do better. I’m not going to lie though, this has been exhausting. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the whole ‘some spirit’s having a divine mission’. I will follow you in there, but you’re going to have to lead the way.”
The phantom coasted away from me slowly, moving towards the light in the woods. I followed on the edge of the ghost’s cloak, which seemed to mark the path I needed to follow.
As we left the edge of the woods, the tall trees encompassed our path. I would have been completely lost if it hadn’t been for the mysterious phantom in front of me. The spirit’s presence wasn’t as hindering now, while I was afraid I was not terrified. Before I knew it, we entered a large clearing. In the middle of the clearing were two figures standing in front of a pyre. As we drew closer to them I realized that the figures were Sam and Dean. Once we were close enough that I could hear them, the spirit waved its hand towards them, implying that I needed to pay close attention.
“I’m sorry Dean,” Sam said. Dean was crying.
“I loved her Sam. I never told her, but I loved her.” Dean wept.
“You didn’t have to say it Dean. She knew.” Sam said reaching out to pat Dean’s shoulder.
“If only I had been there, I could have protected her.” Dean whimpered. I looked to the spirit for explanation. I wasn’t sure who the Winchester’s were talking about, but this was clearly a hunter’s funeral. Instinctively, I walked towards Dean ready to comfort him, but when I tried to touch him my hand passed through his arm. Right. They were shadows of something to come. They weren’t real. But why then did it feel so real? I stood beside Dean looking helplessly at him. The phantom appeared beside me.
“Who is this?” I turned to the spirit and pointed behind me at the fire. The phantom stood immovable. “What happened? Who died? Is it someone I know?” The questions were falling out of my mouth at this point. To my dismay, the spirit continued to stand still as a statue. The only reason I knew it wasn’t a statue was its robes floating in the breeze.
Since I wasn’t getting answers from the spirit I turned to face the fire. I had no idea who the figure was in front of me, since it was wrapped in something and encased in flames. Staring at this unknown person’s funeral was too much. My heart ached to be home with the Sam and Dean. I shivered at the thought that I may not get to go home. This made me feel a lot of feelings, but mostly anger towards myself for being so dense. This night made me realize what I’ve been missing. I at least had to try to get home. “I get it!” I screamed. “I understand that I need to make every second count, that I need to take a break sometimes, and that I need to care for those I love. But what do you want?” The phantom remained silent but someone else spoke up.
“Do you have anything else you want say?” Sam asked. Dean wiped the tears from his face and bent down to pick something up out of his bag. In the darkness I couldn’t tell what it was, but I could make out a small and skinny silhouette as he tossed it into the fire.
“(Y/N) you were one hell of a hunter. You were brave and smart. You were determined and straightforward. You were my best friend. But most importantly you were family. I love you. I’m sorry I didn’t say something sooner.” As soon as Dean used my named I felt my stomach drop. It was me in that fire! I was dead. The man who I had always secretly loved, was in front of me confessing his love, but I couldn’t do anything about it because I was dead.
I fell to the ground at the feet of the ghost. “How did this happen? Oh no! Spirit what did I do?” The phantom remained motionless. I could hear Sam saying something behind me but I could not listen. “Please answer me! I realize I’ve made mistakes. I will always miss my sister, but I’ve still got family that I need to be there for. I understand that I’ve got a lot to make up for. Is it too late?” I begged the spirit for an answer.
The spirit finally moved, folding its arms as if it was trying to let me know it was listening. I trembled in fear as I realized there was a good chance I was going to lose more than my sister. Tears were falling down my face. I would do anything just to have a few more minutes with the Winchester’s. They at least deserved an explanation and apology. Perhaps I had pushed them too far away for them to care. Perhaps I was too far gone to recover. I wasn’t going to give up yet though. I at least had to tell them I was sorry.
“Listen! I understand my foolishness. I have learned from my mistakes, but now I need to make them right. Please tell me, if I do this will I be able to change this outcome? If I can, I will let the past, present, and future come with me wherever I go. I will not forget this night or the things I learned from it. Please!” I begged. The silent spirit did nothing. In desperation I grabbed at the phantom’s robes. The spirit tried to rip them away but I gripped them tightly. I continued to beg to have my fate reversed as the spirit struggled to get away. Finally the spirit’s robe ripped and it quickly backed away. I remained on the ground asking the phantom to change this outcome, when suddenly I noticed the spirit begin to change. I watched as the phantom crinkled and tumbled until it and its robes collapsed into bedsheets.

Chapter 2
Series Summary: After a rough year, the reader is having a hard time doing anything besides work. When Dean encourages the reader to celebrate Christmas with Sam and him, the reader declines. After their disagreement, the reader retreats to her room. Throughout the night the reader is visited by four unexpected visitors. Will these visitors be able to help her have a change of heart before it’s too late?
Chapter Three Summary: The reader is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Present. What he shows the reader causes conflicting feelings in their heart.
Pairings: Dean x Reader
Warnings: Mild Angst
Word Count: 2,050+
A/N: Clearly I’m a little behind. I got sick yesterday, and while I was trying to finish this part I was falling asleep sitting up. I still need to post two chapters after this one before the end of Christmas Day. So be prepared for a lot of fanfiction for Christmas! Anyway, this is loosely based on A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I will be writing five chapters to follow the format of the book. Wish me luck. Merry Christmas and Enjoy!
