Arthopod is an experimental fashion film influenced by insect aesthetics and movement. From our conceptual mood board we developed our starting point ‘arthopod’ by adding a 1960′s influence through clothing and filters. This was influenced by the ‘trippy’ visuals and colour palettes through our mood board.
We chose our music based on how we felt when we listened to it and the piece of music we chose had no major climaxes. This linked in with our Arhropod theme as insects are curious creatures that crawl around and we felt the music really fitted into the over all film.
Referring back to our mood board we wanted to create the trippy visuals we envisioned, we decided to film a bath bomb exploded which resulted in capturing some great stills and footage to incorporate through the film, if we’d had more time and money we could have got dozens of different coloured bath bombs to film and merge together!
TWIGGY 60′s icon inspiration, the green and pink colour palette we replicated through the nature based location and the pops of pink through the models aesthetics finished with the green soft filter to combine the whole piece.
We decided to filter our film with a pale green over lay to add dusky warm 60s feel, this is an image of our test editing the filiming loaction with the filter. We loved the tranformation but wanted the tones to be cooler not as warm and vibrant, a softer finish which we achieved within the final piece.
We decided to go for a 60s vibe after analysing our mood board. We discovered the colouring, vintage filter trippy affects kaleidoscope like affects had a 60s vibe. Although we didn’t want it to be a clear replication of 60s style we incorporated 60s inspired clothing with very shimmery eye make up to catch the light.
We chose a loose bell sleeved blouse with subtle corset like neck detailing, we over lapped this with a corally pink sequined shift dress, to add colour and texture. The pink sequined dress worked well with the light. we finished the look with a black choke and black bohemian scarf to emphasises movement in the shots.
We practiced shooting some stills in the shade and then in the beaming sunlight, we were thrilled with the way the make up looked in the sun, it was soft but really popped when the sun light caught it.
We used soft greens and blues to bring out Georgia’s blue eyes finished with a soft deep purple eye liner on the water line. A deep coral lip to compliment the pink dress and finished with facial diamantes mainly to add a bug like aesthetic giving texture and pattern to the face in a very subtle manor. it also gave a bohemian festival vibe bringing a modern feel to the 60s inspiration.
- We really wanted to film on location and incorporate natural light and nature. We found this location which had loads of different angles we could film from, we particularly liked the field of trees. The natural light really worked whilst filming catching the light of the eye make up we used.
We really like the movement and pattern used within the clip as the aesthetic is interesting and adds depth into the film. We also like the music as it adds drama and emotion. If we was to improve anything about the clip we would change the colouring as it is a bit dull and we would rather incorporate brighter and more vivid shades of colour.
10 minute mood board visualising the colours, shapes and texture that we will try to incorporate within our film. This mood board allowed us to get a clearer visual for our film and visualise different ways of editing. It also gave us the opportunity to create a colour palette for our film and the kind of shapes we would like to be included within our editing.
Quick drawing of a storyboard visualising our ideas for each scene in our fashion experimental film. This will help when it comes to filming and editing our film together.
These are a few quick initial ideas regarding our fashion experimental film. We hope our film represents some of these key words through editing, clothing and movements. By doing this it helped give us a clearer vision in the direction we want our film to go.
Experimental films focus on body movements rather than clothing and are often produced by fashion photographers.
They focus on still shots and have an emphasis on editing using double exposure / layering.
The film usually use 4 or 5 visual stories, cutting back and forth.
After having viewed an array of films of this style - for example: “Movement by Chalayan x Aya Bambi and Ryan Heffington, Shaved by Bart Hess and Kenzo “ Electric Jungle” by Mat Maitland, we both felt strongly that this was the genre we wanted to base our own fashion film around. The creativity and use of dance and movement really interested us both. All films we watched were aesthetically interesting, I think this is important as experimental films don’t usually have a story line so keeping the viewer engaged through aesthetics is vital, we aim to achieve this through our film.
