Jingliu.
Where does one even begin with her? Limitless swordswoman. Coldhearted and ruthless warrior. Insane traitor. All of these are true, perhaps, no less by her account, but Jing Yuan knows her best as beloved master.
He would never call her mother; by no means has she ever been deserving of that title, nor did he ever wish for her to be one to him, but it was she who took him in, ousted from his family estate and honorless after he marched out declaring his decision to join the Cloud Knights. It was she who gave him food, a bed and a roof over his head, space to finish his education and a place among the Knights' ranks. It was she who gave him a home.
They never grew close. Perhaps a result of both of their faults, Jingliu with her general aloofness and Jing Yuan with his respect, for despite all his mischief he was already selfless to a fault even when young, and dared not seek more than he already had. The Sword Champion of all people taking him in and teaching him was already a dream come true. It was enough. No matter how hard he was drilled, no matter how his muscles ached and how scolded he was by his healers after a particularly difficult lesson that ended in more than a few cuts and scrapes, it was more than enough. He was happy.
...But perhaps he did miss the comfort of a mother's embrace. Perhaps there was something more he wished for, beyond the drilling and slow-to-grow approval. If not a mother, maybe a friend. Baiheng was a warm support, certainly, but it wasn't nearly the same. With the loss of his parents, Jingliu became caretaker, mentor, and confidant all in one -- or she should have. Jing Yuan could never bring himself to fully confide in her at all. He could never ask for comfort from her. His insecurities, fears, doubts -- surely the woman he admired so deeply would react with disdain to such weaknesses, with her icy, distant perfection and mastery. If he could prove to her that he could overcome these weaknesses through action alone, he could prove it to himself too; he need not express them through words. (Perhaps this is why he's always had trouble expressing his desires, in every relationship he's had during and since.)
...But did he truly overcome those weaknesses? Did she find him weak in that final battle, that final lesson, since she survived? Should he have killed her? Could he have killed her? He doesn't know. Jingliu gave him the greatest gift she ever could; her time, her instruction, her home. Had he repaid her enough in that strike? He doesn't know that either. A thousand favors, a thousand strikes in return don't feel like they'd ever be enough for the gratitude and love he holds for her, or what she'd done for him.
In an endless night, there is nothing closer than the bright moon, always hanging in the sky. These words have been true of their relationship from the very beginning, and the yearning that comes with them as well. A yearning for closeness, an expression of pride, perhaps, at the very least acknowledgement. His biggest regret with Jingliu is never truly receiving that bond he desired. He never knew the way she spoke of him when he was not around, nor the way she viewed him as a shining star among the Cloud Knights. But her chapter in his life has long since been resolved; it is far too late for those reassurances now.
Is he content with what they had? As master and student? ...Yes. He'd say so. He'd like to think so. Still, he misses her deeply. The loss of Jingliu stings sharply, hurts differently than the loss of anyone else in the Quintet. In losing her he lost a teacher, a parent, a pillar. With the loss of her he truly was alone; there was no one to turn to, no one to ask for advice, and certainly no one to rely on but himself, her name swept away by the ravages of time and cruelty of forbidden history. So when the moon hangs overhead, bright and cold and distant, he raises a cup and dedicates a toast to her, to the memory that remains with him and him alone.
In memory of Jingliu, Sword Champion of the Luofu, master, leader, soldier...
...Friend.

there's something about AUs where the setting is the same but the character fundamentally changes because the factors driving their key developments in life are no longer applicable. i love those "what if xyz never happened/happened instead of abc" AUs so much. never let anyone tell you it's OOC because the biggest factor in personality development is environment. so long as you show the work of how you get from point A to point B it's excellent and i encourage this to be done more
