In "The Three A's of Advocacy" the first "A" is Accompaniment. (The second, Amplification; the third, Acclimation). The majority of the time (but not always), "accompaniment" should be physical presence. If you are unable to walk, or are immunocompromised, or unwilling to risk your family's safety or well-being, for whatever reason, you can still accomplish the first "A" by accompanying in other ways. As an ALLY, "accompaniment" may or may not require your silence. As an ALLY, you must learn how to best discern, from mentors and wiser people, when your voice is needed and when it is not. As an ALLY, sometimes only your body is called to the front. Thank you to all those allies who stepped up an "accompanied" when it really counted today, each in their own ways. Many potential allies have been sleeping through the wake up call for too long, but today's experience gave me some hope.
