super self indulgent but because it’s my birthday here are some sketches of my DnD character, Sherry! She’s a dwarf paladin, team mom, and will absolutely kick your ass.

gay fantasy books i read in 2017
or at least the ones i remember. send me recs!!
karen memory by elizabeth bear - badass (i think fat?) sexworker foils various evil plots in an american steampunk setting while falling in love with a super smart (also badass) east indian character.  pros: positive depictions of sex work, a cool trans character, characters of color. cons: sexual violence/abuse against women, mentions of rape, less positive depictions of sex work
carry on by rainbow rowell - did you find the harry potter series to be too long, too heterosexual, and lacking in vampires? then you’ll love this book. pros: super lovable characters, funny, clever, addressed everything i don’t love about the harry potter series.cons: i read it too fast and bummed myself out.
in other lands by sarah rees brennan - socially awkward, sarcastic teen goes to high fantasy hogwarts and has many adventures while making cool monster friends. pros: bisexual lead, badass ladies everywhere, super funny, goes hard on the patriarchy, realistic relationship development, and the main character wants to kiss monsters which is highly relatable. cons: so while i personally don’t think the characters were sexualized, there are mentions of minors having sex in the book (offpage). which is sometimes uncomfy for me.
a gentleman's guide to vice and virtue by mackenzi lee - a period romp about a spoiled (but lovable), bisexual rich kid who goes on an exciting adventure with his best friend and sister and learns how not to be an asshole along the way. pros: character development, depictions of mental illness, love interest is a black, (spoiler alert!!!) disabled man, pirates! cons: idk man it’s not in my top 5 but it’s a really fun read
river of teeth by sarah gailey - LOVE THIS BOOK. promiscuous and hunky bisexual cowboy does a hippo heist in a setting where hippos replaced cows/horses in america. pros: nonbinary, black love interest!!! who blows stuff up!! cool, amazing, fat, french thief!! pregnant, gay, mexican assassin!! POC everywhere!! So much action!! cons: this book is sooo short! i read it in one sitting! but there is a sequel THANK GOD. also gratuitous violence (which i love but i thought i should forewarn u)
27 hours by tristina wright - lovable, gay kids doing their best during moon war. pros: SO MUCH good representation of lgbt and characters of color (and one of the protags is deaf!) cons: it definitely feels like you’re reading a YA book. some of the narration/dialogue was kind of clunky? or cheesy? it was a little tough to get thru
meddling kids by edgar cantero - honestly this one didn’t catch my attention before i had to return it, but its dark, gay scooby doo right? someone tell me if i need to go back and give it another try
song of achilles by madeline miller - i read it because everyone told me too. personally not a fan. like i get it. but its not my thing.
nightrunner series 1-4 by lynn flewelling - dear god where do i even start. kind of starts as high fantasy sherlock but slowly devolves into utter chaos. i discovered this series early in the year when i was desperate for gay fantasy books that i could check out thru my local library. spoiler alert: there aren’t a lot. pros: super lovable characters and a setting without gender or sexuality stigma. like women are in the foreground and background just. doing things. like, if the characters visit the blacksmith or whatever there are male and female blacksmiths there. and no one is like “wow look at her being a blacksmith even though shes a woman!!” its just natural. so yeah, that was really cool and there are many badass female characters. CONS: OH BOY. so like, it’s been awhile but if i remember correctly, while their romantic relationship doesn’t develop until the main chara is of age, they do that thing where like the other chara is like “i can acknowledged his hottness as long as i don’t act on it” which is still very creepy. also these books get pretty dark. if you can get past that, then give it a try but for the love of god, do not read past 3. book 4 is bad and weird and gross and it just gets worse.
