A Small Little Announcement

I am going to be more or less just. dropping out of the hazbin/helluva critical space.

Mostly because it's getting kinda repetitive seeing the exact same behaviors from Vivzie and I've realized that since it's very likely that she's never gonna change.

I'm keeping this blog up and I might try to be more active here with other properties, but if not, I'll come back with an update with my main so if you're interested, you can follow me there.

Okay what the fuck was even the point of just giving out names for the newest episodes? This is literally a manipulation tactic because she got called out for her BS claims.

"For some positivity", no you just want to distract your audience from your shortcomings. There's literally no point in just sharing the names of the new Helluva Episodes when we're going to see them anyway.

Plus there are literally leaks in Helluva that most are most likely from 210..so yeah she fucked herself with that one.

Probably the second but even if it is, you have so many fans believing that as gospel that if 7/7 rolls around and the trailer DOESN'T drop a lot of fans are going to be pissed off.

On the flipside, you're probably going to have a lot of fans dropping Helluva, because from what I've seen, a lot of people mostly got into Helluva to tide themselves over until Hazbin dropped. I love how some stans when they realize that they have no leg to stand on (or know that they're being the unreasonable one) will just say "shut up" instead of anything like. Actually good about the design.

Like no "it's cool because of xyz reason", just "it's cool because vivzie made it and if you don't like that shut up 🤬🤬🤬".

Stans are on a whole new level of just. I don't even know if I have the words to describe how insane that is.

Also the misspelling of perfect feels like it's supposed to be a parody but I know that this is a serious post by a stan

Ok then guys let me just take back everything I’ve said about Vivziepop and Queen Bee. queen is prefect because she’s Viv’s oc. 💀💀💀

I love how there's the "we want to respect Kesha and her producers 🤗" but if you needed a legal-backed request to get you to not do certain things, maybe (1) you should've just gotten a different voice actor and song (2) you don't respect either in the way you want people to think.

This design is ass. This feels very rushed. Like. This is literally a JayJay ripoff. And oh my god I just realized she has wings. This design is definitely rushed and all over the place.

I won’t talk much about this but the character is very similar to Kesha’s old personality (I think that’s the right word) something she has distant herself because she didn’t like that side of her. You can tell in his ep from her voice she was pretty sad or sounded uninterested. I don’t know everything about Kesha or what she with tho but I just wanted to mention that.

Kesha hasn’t really been relevant for a while so she could of just been doing it for a paycheck and I don’t blame her. After this all I can say is that I hope she’s doing good.

Not the most recent Helluva Boss episode pulling out the sad piano music and then finishing with a gross gag in order to "off set it" in the last like 2 minutes of the episode.

Also I hate Beelzebub's design and her voice is. Fine. But she always didn't sound like the eccentric party girl that her design says she is.

Honestly in general just seeing it made me go "we're really getting this instead of a Hazbin trailer or the Barbie Wire episode?"

For a minute, I genuinely thought that even Vivzie didn't like it, but that's because my first reaction was to see if it was advertised on the Helluva Boss twitter, which it wasn't, and I only just saw that she talked about it being released ONLY on her main.

But, eh, I guess that's what happens when you view something as YOUR passion project instead of a team's passion project.

I just had the horrible realization that the reason why any St/litz focused episode or any "emotionally driven" episode is so painful (not actually, more in a "eugh why did you right that" way): it feels less like an emotionally driven plotline and just a badly written whump fic.

Like everything just feels like it was made to torture the character and/or make the audience feel bad for the characters, rather than it contributing to some sort of narrative or character arc.

Which I know is some people's cup of tea, but it immediately makes things less interesting.

Like of COURSE there's drama happening between St/las and Bl/tzo, because the writers want you to feel bad for them and root for them to get together. There's definitely this weird "rooting more for stolas" vibe which is kinda a lot but it's still there.

Also because I nearly wrote this typo: I keep forgetting that. No time in this series did the two actually "get together". Like technically they were "together" in the sense that they were/are fuck buddies, which isn't bad, but the writers and the fandom act as if they had a relationship outside of that, which they very much didn't.

So having the plot try to get the emotions of "they're going through a rough patch in their relationship but it'll get better" when they never even had a relationship outside of sex is just not good writing.

Maybe I'm overthinking but i just wanted to let it out.

Jesus Christ, we knew that the asking for animators was happening quickly, but not that quickly.

Like, last year, that is admittedly more spread out between 8 or 9 months vs this year where it's been only 3 or 4 months between requests is insane and is very telling of what's goin on behind the scenes.

How long was it since the last time Viv said they needed help on Helluva? Is this the third time this month?

Well it has been quite frequent job openings at spindlehorse.

This being the latest post (27th April 2023) and its asking for freelance background artists.

This was in January this year

Also in January this time looking for background artists.

First tweet is on 30 Aug 22 and is looking for helluva/hazbin animators and on 14 Sept 22 she posted again for spindlehorse looking to hire more (helluva)

And last post I could find is this Jan 22 post.

As you can see the amount of time that passes before they seek out new animators/ background artists is such a short time frame. I don't like to make assumptions but from Erin's accounts (a former animator at spindlehorse) the work loads were overwhelming and another animator mentioned in a tweet how they are still animating into the early morning hours. From an outside perspective and understanding how stressful, difficult and draining animating can be it is quite concerning how fast these animators are coming and going and how frequently they post job openings. Especially now considering spindlehorse is asking for more freelance background artists. Freelance artists may not be in union, are still at art school, self taught and also young adults and this is their first "industry" job so them being taken advantage of can happen. Not saying it happened or happens but it is an environment it can potentially happen in. It just brings up concerns for me personally how they going about this. Also not mentioning how many animators work on Helluva and hazbin at the same time or in the same time frame. Considering how complex the characters are, the backgrounds aswell and Viv wanting fluid animation that is taxing point blank.

Because yeah, no, you're right: she's not even given what Chloe is which is the "hmmm maybe we're going to redeem her SIKE NO WE'RE NOT", Lila's flat out portrayed as this 4D chess master who is leading so many double lives because She's A Villain And Villains Are Like That.

While this probably was not intentional (but with this show I can never tell) her being Italian actually somewhat links into that, because there is a shit ton of colorism in Italy and so making a darker skinned Italian girl who only lies and cheats and is this master manipulator is. Gross.

Especially because she has brown hair, brown skin, and green eyes, which is a Romani stereotype because of Esmerelda, and there is a high anti-Roma sentiment in Italy.

Those last two paragraphs are theorizing, but it's worth pointing out.

Okay, to dive right into it, there are some characters who I am excluding because, for the most part, I'm not sure what cultural things I would be able to talk about, so just letting everyone know: I will not be talking about the Agreste family, the Fathom family, the Bourgeois family, the Lavillant family, and the Raincomprix family.

Like I have problems with how the characters are written, don't get me wrong, but none of them have particular cultural things that I want to talk about. I feel like the Bourgeois and Agreste families will just have their own posts because Jesus Christ.

Originally, I was going to go into a breakdown of each character and why their ethnicities don't actually impact their characters in the subtlest ways, but I can actually easier summarize it.

What impact does having any of the characters being certain nationalties have on the plot that aren't just racial sterotypes?

For most, it literally has no effect at all (Alix being Amazigh, Kim being Vietnamese, Nathaniel being Jewish and Nino being Moroccan).

Some it barely has an effect (Alya being Martiniquian and Marinette being Chinese).

For Kagami in particular, her whole story boils down to the "oppressive Asian parent who is hyper controlling of her life", which is a racist stereotype about Asian people. It would've been fine if it was written by an Asian person, but it was written by a white man, so yikes.

And then there are other characters where, in my opinion, they should be POC because otherwise it's just flat out uncomfortable. Yes, I am talking about Mylène. She was only given her hair to show that she was a nature activist, and that's it.

Also this is a personal opinion, but I think Jalil's whole thing would've been less eugh if the family was Egyptian, because it could be that Jalil wants to reconnect with his Egyptian roots, something that he can do via studying their ancient history, but his father discourages it since it doesn't matter because they're in France now.

Before I close this off, I wanted to mention something that isn't racist I don't think but feels like a strange microagression: Lila. Like, I don't know how to word it, but having the only Italian character being a conniving, master manipulator at the age 13 feels like a strange microagression, don't know how else to word it.

Though I'll get into Lila and Chloe's writing later.

One of the problems with the fandom is that they'll be like "omg this is great angst material and it's so well written to 😍😍" but when people who have experienced the trauma depicted go "hey this isn't a good way to depict that sort of trauma" the fandom goes "well you're just a hater then 🙄🙄" or even worse "but [this person that vivzie most definitely retweeted because of the fact that they agree] agrees that this is a good representation! 🤗🤗🤗".

Also the vibe of "the only two traumas that exist and/or matter in this show unless it's to prop up the main two characters' trauma are Stolas and Blitzo" is disgusting. Point blank.

I might have gotten a little off topic but your post made me think of this.

Ever since Exes and Oohs I've fell a lot deeper into the more critical side of the Helluva Boss fandom, and I've gotta say as someone with a passion for writing, the way the main cast is thrown aside for Stolas and Blitzo angst is so upsetting. It's disappointing. However, something that has always bothered me even when I did look at HB with more of a neutral perspective is the way the writers handle Octavia's feelings about her parents' separation. As someone who lives that reality, I really hate how the writers (and by extension, the fandom) brushes aside Octavia's issues because "Stolas is trying". But what is it that he's trying??

I think I speak for nearly every person whose parents divorced when they were in middle school/high school when I say that even if we may agree with what one parent says about the other, that doesn't mean we want to hear the constant complaining and/or bickering between our two parents. We don't want to be that middle man, especially not on the days when we have something fun or exciting planned, and it's easy for us to feel like we aren't being heard if we tell our parents this but they just keep on raving about the other anyways. We're supposed to be your kid, not your screaming chamber. Even if Stellas is abusive (which, undeniably, she is), that does not give Stolas the right to freely go back and forth with her on the phone with Octavia right there. Octavia was clearly uncomfortable with the situation, and she worried it'd interfere with her and her father's plans-- and who could blame her for that? Of course, it's hard to break away from your abuser and it can even be satisfying to hold your ground against them, but it simply isn't right to do it in your daughter's presence. It's upsetting that people think Stolas bickering with Stella on the phone was this big great thing, when really, it wasn't. Octavia deserved better than that.
