Tdlr: they are people too and YouTube sucks
YouTube has a lot of problems. Like, a lot. From advertising to demonetization to copyright, no section of YouTube is free from it. You might be able to get by with a team of 3 or 5, but with a company like Watcher? Especially when you want to consistently put out quality videos while not ruining the content by catering to advertisers? That is really, really hard to do.
I have seen too many creators get abused by YouTube and loose so much of their work to the shenanigans that company pulls. Plus, they themselves are pushing for a subscription service with the insane amount of ads they now add to their videos.
This decision was probably a hard one to make, but they too have mouths to feed and only want to make their dreams come true. And they decided the best way was to make a subscription service. It’s unfortunate, but there would be no way to survive if they opted for channel subscriptions or Patreon.
Plus, $6 a month is not bad. We all enjoy watching their shows and most of us watch half, if not all, of their content. Money wise this is a great deal - especially with the 30% annual if you sign up before May 31st. And on top of that they encourage password sharing. Get 4 people to get the annual right now and that’s $10 a year per person.
But the main thing I want to say is keep in mind that these people are also going to economic hardship trying to keep their company afloat and pay their employees. It’s a business trying to do what they need to in order to keep producing what they, and we, want while keeping roofs over peoples heads and food in their stomachs.
Really don't want to add to the discourse, but although YouTube is accessible and "free," it really sucks. Like YouTube is not good. Things cost money, and YouTube doesn't provide much in that regard. I'm also very sad Watcher is leaving YouTube (I don't even know if I'll follow them) but I can understand why they want to get away from YouTube. I love YouTube as much as any other content consumer but yeah....
