Lovers to Enemies-- Chishiya x Reader (Pt 2)
Read Part 1
===============================================
The card. He took the card and left and so I was left with nothing.
To say everything seemed grim would be an understatement.
I walked outside the flaming interior of the Beach to find Arisu commemorating the dead. Noble for someone who was condemned by the very people he now tried to honor.
"Hey," I said walking over to Arisu and Usagi.
"You're alive," Usagi smiled and gave me a side-hug. In her eyes there was an unspoken sense of trauma from what we both had gone through.
"What do you think comes next?" Arisu asked, staring absentmindedly at the roaring flames which consumed the Beach.
The flames licked upward, destroying what had been our former utopia. The air was filled with a light smoke that reminded me of cigarettes every time I inhaled. It wasn't exactly unpleasant, but it felt like an appropriate reminder of the ones who had fallen.
"It could be more games." A familiar voice joined our conversation and we all turned to find An standing behind us, limping with Kuina at her side.
"God, I hope not," Kuina said.
"Are you okay?" Usagi exclaimed and chattered with the others over Kuina's injuries. Apparently she had gotten involved with Last Boss in a Karate fight to protect An. I never knew Kuina had done the sport.
The only thing I had known about Kuina was that she was close with Chishiya. I frequently saw him whispering to her during the Beach. She stayed away from me mostly. I never played games with her either.
"You're not-- with him right?" Arisu said slowly, breaking the flow of the conversation. For a second I paused, racking my thoughts to find who he was talking about until I realized who the "him" was.
"Chishiya? Hell no. I'm so sorry to you both for what he did to you. I wish it could've worked out another way," her voice trailed off as the others began to comfort her. But she never denied having any involvement in the plan.
She always knew, then.
I drifted off to the sound of soft whispers between the survivors of the Beach. Before I fully fell asleep, I could've sworn I saw the ghost of a white hoodie on the outskirts of the makeshift campground that vanished.
-------------------------------------------------
An's prediction echoed in my ears as the collar clicked around my neck. The robotic voice of a woman who I now had known to be Mira announced my registration. It of course had to be more games.
After almost dying from the King of Spades, I chose the Jack of Hearts as my venue of poison. I always did fairly well in hearts games at the Beach, and after being separated from the others I wouldn't have to betray anyone I knew. It was my specialty after all.
There was no guarantee I could find good teammates at clubs venues, and forget Spades or Diamonds. Those would have me killed faster than Chishiya tried to.
The dimly lit jail was a dismal site for a game; the walls and floors had traces of mold covering them. The players around me eyed each other with suspicion. A few chatted.
The sound of moans coming from a cell nearby made my face flush as I awkwardly craned my head to see the source of where it was coming from.
Big mistake.
A man with broad shoulders was ramming his girlfriend against the wall quite passionately. I didn't look away for a second, and I nearly jumped out of my skin when a silky voice spoke almost directly into my ear.
"Like what you see? My my, I didn't know you were into... things like that. But I guess we never tried anything like it."
Unknowingly, I instinctually backed towards the entrance of a cell that was away from the couple. I turned to find Chishiya who followed my steps until we were both in a cell.
"What--" I trailed off as he closed the door behind him with a faint click. He looked at me hungrily, the way he looked at me after he was the only survivor in a game.
I felt the cold wall touch my back as I pressed against it. Chishiya stood mere inches away from my face, threatening my very existence.
He traced my jawline with one of his hands, and with the other braced himself against the wall. I could hear the sound of his breathing amidst the faint background noise of everything else.
"I knew I'd find you here," Chishiya smiled quietly, almost to himself. "You would choose a hearts game, and the lowest one to maximize your chances of survival." He answered the question I had before I ever asked it.
He was impossibly close, and yet impossibly far away at the same time. I could've sworn he leaned in slightly, until the sound of the game starting chimed.
Without saying another word, he vanished into the main area the others were congregating. It was like he was never there, never with me.
Just as it always had been.

Brains & Brawn- Chapter 10: Confession
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Hey.” A voice you vaguely recognized woke you. The other day you had immediately collapsed into a dreamless sleep when you got back, exhausted by the mental and physical games you had played.
You blinked a couple of times to shake off the grogginess of the morning. You wanted more than anything for the voice to go away so you could fall back asleep.
“Hey,” it repeated again, softer this time. You waved your hand impatiently in the general direction of the voice, but whoever was there was clearly not going away. You groaned and sat up in bed to make eye contact with your intruder.
It was a pleasant surprise to find Kuina sitting on your bed. You smiled genuinely when you realized that she was the only person you truly wanted to see.
“Let’s go sparring,” she said. “It would be good to let off steam.”
“Okay,” you said smiling and got up to change.
You sparred, and expectedly lost over and over again with each round of fighting. Kuina would hesitate to strike the final blow, but she never needed to. You were always out of breath, or keeling over in pain by that point.
You knew you needed to get over that mental barrier. It was only practice, and although Kuina had problems with the final blow she didn’t hesitate to deliver the bruises that littered your extremities. It was a problem that would be fatal if it came up in a game.
You had to be able to directly hurt her and other people.
Initially, you couldn’t figure out why you could leave the other team to die in the five of spades without losing too much sleep over it, but you couldn’t get over yourself to take sparring more seriously. No, you did know you finally realized.
You could attribute their deaths to the games, but it was different when all the responsibility was on your hands. You had blood on your hands once, and you didn’t relish the feeling of having it happen again.
Over the next week, Kuina kept dragging you out of bed to fight. You had no time to even think about going to the shooting range. You were either training strenuously, or felt so physically exhausted it hurt to move.
Even though you never won, you got noticeably better. Especially with your dodging.  Kuina didn’t let you rest by just getting away from her in fights. She made you practice punches and kicks with a bag instead, criticizing your technique until you became more precise and accurate.
You felt yourself closing the gap between the difference in skill, slowly but surely. Eventually, Kuina had an especially hard time pinning you down from how nimble you became. Once, you even reached a stalemate from both of you being too fatigued to continue.
The days floated by, sending the rest of the week into a blur. You sparred with Kuina until you were so physically exhausted that most nights you barely had the energy to drag yourself to the Beach’s bar. Sometimes, when you went that way, Kuina instead disappeared with Chishiya, returning the next day with a guilty look in her eyes that you hadn’t seen since you initially met.
You felt that you weren’t supposed to have a part in the thing she was hiding. Whatever it was, it involved Arisu and Usagi, the newcomers. Frequently, you saw them together in discreet places within the Beach that few people knew about. They were always talking in hushed whispers.
Sometimes when you snooped around Kuina, you bumped into Niragi. You tried to avoid him like the plague. When he saw you occasionally he vainly attempted to talk to you, but you adeptly maneuvered away from him every time. He was always with a different woman now, and when he didn’t think you were looking he leered at them like they weren’t human.
You also avoided Chishiya. Or kept extensively planning to at least. You stayed true to your word, and wrote on notes of paper when the militants would be out so Chishiya could use the shooting range in his free time without you. You even left him a pair of earplugs, which felt rather generous compared to what he did.
You only could tell that he went to the range sometimes when the earplugs would shift their position, moving slightly left or right from hands that moved them when you were out of the room.
You still couldn’t believe that he kissed you, and let you disappear from his life without a question. It was you who avoided him, but he did nothing about it. Nothing to fix it. He was probably staying with Kuina. You felt used, full of a hurt so deep, so indescribable that it practically hollowed out your insides.
Tuesday came around as it always unfortunately did, and for once Kuina didn’t wake you. You felt ironic. If you weren’t going to spar, you only had one other way to spend your time: shooting.
You slipped out of the room to the range with your favorite gun and glanced around cautiously. Nobody was there. It was always so much better when you were alone.
Your aim got ever so slightly worse due to the days you had gone shooting. Or maybe just the target felt particularly difficult to hit that day, you couldn’t tell the difference.
You squeezed the gun to fire a round that barely missed the center. The clear ringing sound of the gun made you realize that one of your earplugs was in fact not in your ear.
You turned to the side to find a familiar man in a white hoodie standing by your side. You almost dropped the gun in surprise, but ungracefully kept a handle on it. He had to have snuck upon you extremely quietly and carefully in order to remove the earplug.
You realized with a deadening feeling that you were at the shooting range and again– it was Tuesday. Of course Chishiya was so meticulous to track you down on your appointed training schedule without forgetting about it.
Silly you. You didn’t consider the fact that he wouldn’t let you just cancel the lessons you planned because of your feelings.
This is why you were the spades player, and he was diamonds.
“Why are you here?” You lowered the gun and pulled out the other earplug as you spoke.
“I admit I’ve been doing some thinking.”
You snorted. “Really?” This wasn’t exactly groundbreaking news for Chishiya.
He paused, gently prying the gun out of your hand to place it on a wall nearby. “I am quite an empty person,” he said quietly before making eye contact with you. “I don’t think I’ve ever genuinely had feelings for somebody. I’m not even sure about you.”
You were glad that he took the gun away from you, for you would’ve actually dropped it from surprise.
“But,” he continued without waiting for a response, “I feel different about you now. I can’t explain it. I had my own reasons for being around you originally that I contrived, but suddenly–.” Chishiya looked unsure of himself for once as he broke eye contact for a moment, then turned back to you. “I was doing things without thinking. You made me start to consider things that I never imagined I would think about.”
Your face flushed at his confession. Could it even be a confession?
“I kissed you to see if I would feel anything,” he said softly. He looked away and absentmindedly traced his hand over the gun. So that was all he had to say after so long.
Your heart was in emotional turmoil. It managed to simultaneously drop into your chest and race at the same time. You didn't want to ask if he felt anything or not. It would be more than awful if he didn’t. So you said something that was sure to leave you with more regrets if it didn’t go right.
“Do you want to try again?”
Chishiya’s glittering eyes lifted to meet yours, his face expressionless. You immediately wondered if you had made a terrible mistake. Then he approached you so slowly that you thought he would never reach you. He carefully placed his hand to the side of your face and leaned in.
For a moment, he stayed like that. You could smell the faint mint on his breath.
You thought he was going to pull away when he kissed you for the second time. Soft. Sweet. Slow. You shivered even though it wasn’t cold after his lips met yours.
His tongue teased your bottom lip clumsily, and you smiled into the kiss. He didn’t have to say anything about how he felt. The way he kissed you told you everything and more even if he wouldn’t verbalize it.
Chishiya broke the kiss, and you thought of what to say until you felt his mouth on your neck. He found the spot that felt sensitive almost immediately and teased it gently with his teeth before sucking on it. Your mind immediately went blank. It was so good, he was so good you couldn’t possibly remember being mad at him ever.
Even still, the crackle of someone stepping on grass nearby didn’t escape your notice. You gently pushed Chishiya off of you and looked around. Somebody had to be there to make that sound. But you could only see Chishiya.
“Maybe,” your voice cracked with uncertainty. “We should continue talking in my room.”
He nodded almost seriously before giving you the ghost of a grin. You carefully linked your arm around his, looking at his face to read his reaction. He stiffened slightly, but didn’t do anything to shake you off.
“Follow me,” was the only thing Chishiya murmured quietly. He took you through the Beach’s halls in an intricate way, taking so many detours and turns that you had never seen before. Somehow, without you realizing how you got there, he found the familiar hallway that led to your room.
You didn’t know why he took such an extensive way back to your room until you realized that you hadn’t seen or passed any people. He was hiding you. You didn’t want to be treated like some secret.
It felt like you weren’t good enough for him.
“Chishiya I think–” you began to speak as the door to your room shut behind you. He interrupted you with another kiss, pressing your back to the wall eagerly.
“Let me do the thinking, yeah?” he said in between peppered kisses.
“No Chishiya–” you awkwardly stepped back away from him and flopped over backwards onto the bed.
He raised an eyebrow as he watched you do so and said, “I didn’t know you were this spontaneous.” You reddened as you registered the implications of going on a bed.
“Oh,” you covered your face in embarrassment and felt the bed shift. It was like a heavy weight suddenly dropped onto it. “No it’s not that. It’s just I feel like there’s always been this distance between us, and every opportunity you get you try to extend it. You’re there, but you aren’t.”
You removed your hands from your face and scooted backwards so your back was leaning against the headrest of the bed. “You’re like this now,” you smiled sadly and made eye contact, “but tomorrow it’ll be different.”
Chishiya’s face became expressionless once more as he watched you coolly. You had no idea what he was thinking.
“Come sit next to me,” you patted the side of the bed. It was like you were calling over a skittish dog. Chishiya maneuvered his position to be next to you somewhat clumsily and hesitated before attempting to put an arm around you. You leaned into him so it wasn’t as clumsy, and finally it felt right.
“With that face, I bet I’m not the first girl,” you said quietly. To your surprise, you felt Chishiya’s body shake gently as he laughed to himself.
“You’re right, but not because of what you think,” he smiled and caressed the side of your cheek. “I was with a girl once back when I first entered medical school. She even met my parents.”
He watched your surprise with amusement as you playfully slapped his arm. Chishiya ever dating someone was news to you. He was very attractive, but his cold demeanor would be off-putting for most girls. “She met your parents?” your voice raised as you questioned him. “What happened to her?”
“We broke up fairly quickly. There was nothing between us. My parents once mentioned that their coworker thought it was odd that I wasn’t dating anyone for being such an eligible male. So I brought somebody they could talk about to their colleagues.” Chishiya’s voice was so monotonous as he recounted this fact that you could hardly believe anyone dated him.
“You’re a heartbreaker! I knew there was something off about you,” you exclaimed which made Chishiya laugh again.
“Maybe.” The corner of his mouth quirked up which gave you the urge to lean to the side to kiss him.
“What did you plan to be in the real world?” Chishiya suddenly asked.
“I wasn’t sure,” you confessed. “I was considering going into shooting competitively but it’s hard to make money through a sport. I love sports, so I wanted to do something like sports medicine. I was considering moving to Shibuya before I landed in the Borderlands.”
“Medicine is quite difficult. It’s highly intensive, and stressful for even very bright doctors.”
“Are you calling me stupid?” You made your voice serious to poke fun at him, and saw a flash of concern flicker over his face although he kept it even. You burst out laughing and he flicked your forehead in annoyance.
“Very droll. Though the patient care aspect is the worst part,” he remarked sarcastically.
“I can imagine that it is for you. Apathetic diamonds player. Have you played many hearts games?”
He ignored your question about the hearts, choosing to instead continue to ponder thoughtfully. “You know, a patient once gave me his dying wish.”
“What was it?”
“I actually don’t know. I couldn’t be bothered to deliver it so I threw it out.” Chishiya drawled and looked at you impassively.
“What?” you blurted, your mouth moving before you could even consciously process what he said. It was just as you said earlier. There was no reason for him to confess this unless he wanted you to think of him differently. It was that distance again.
“That’s so…” your voice trailed off as you thought about it once more. “Why?” you asked gently.
“It’s just as I said. I had no interest in his final affairs.”
There was a brief silence, and you focused on Chishiya’s chest rising and falling and the sound of his faint breathing. He was so alive, but so empty too.
“Would you do the same here?” you asked, thinking of how he watched you leave for games.
“Probably.” His vague response made you feel like there was something more to it, but you didn’t press the point.
You fell back into a silence that eventually lulled you into sleep in Chishiya’s arms. His rhythmic breathing was comforting, and you didn’t feel like arguing further with him.
You woke up with Aguni standing over you, and no Chishiya.
“Get up.” Aguni’s harsh voice roused you compared to what Kuina had made you used to.
“The fuck?” You groggily felt the side of the bed where Chishiya was. It was barely warm, the only trace that he was ever there.
“(Name), you’ve participated in acts that are considered traitorous to the Beach.” Aguni’s words snapped you out of your sleepiness and you froze in fear as the reality of the situation hit you.
Aguni was standing before you, delivering what was basically a death sentence.
A/N: Hey guys! Sorry for being off so long, I had to finish this chapter properly. This bad boy is probably the longest one so far, and perhaps my favorite. Hope you liked it :)

Lovers To Enemies (Chishiya x Reader)
My life was ruined twice.
The first time was when I entered the Borderlands. The last thing I remember was being at home on my couch with my cat, Milo.
He looked at me with his pretty green eyes, his warm body snuggling next to mine. I fell asleep that way, and I found solace with my feline friend.
That was the last time I saw Milo in months.
I woke up in a world without him. A world where I had to fight for my life everyday in games that were designed by someone truly sadistic.
The second time was when I got involved with Chishiya Shuntaro. A man who was not exactly unlike a feline himself.
I loved him. I would like to believe he felt the same. With Chishiya, you never know what he's thinking even if he tells you.
I think I knew how he felt when he kissed my head softly after patching me up post spades game with Niragi. He fell asleep with me in his arms that night, and somehow stayed in the morning.
I think I knew how he felt when he snuck into Hatter's room the next night to change the game schedule so I would never be in a game with Niragi again.
I made a mistake.
I didn't die, but a part of my soul did because now my Chishiya was gone. The kind eyes that had gradually softened in my presence were replaced with those of a stranger.
I was staring into those hardened eyes when Chishiya was dragging me into Hatter's executive room. I didn't even try fighting back, there was no point in doing so. If Chishiya wanted something he would get it.
Knowing Chishiya, it would be so much worse if I resisted.
He shoved me onto the ground, throwing a walkie-talkie next to me. I could feel the punishing eyes of the Beach executives on my back even as I faced the floor.
I lifted my head slowly to find two other people who were in the same position.
I vaguely recognized the girl, Usagi. I played a game with her two nights prior. That was the extent I knew her, and the boy-- Oh God.
It seemed Niragi had taken an interest in him by the way he was staring him down.
"I found her keeping lookout nearby. She tried to distract me but I saw right through her," Chishiya said calmly. My heart stilled. He didn't even look down.
Niragi finally turned his attention my way. He smiled, looking his lips as he looked between me and Usagi. I barely noticed that I was crawling slowly back. It was pure instinct to get myself away from a predator like Niragi.
"Niragi, you can decide what to do with the traitors. Well done Chishiya," Aguni spoke decisively, his eyes focused on a painting of what looked like an elk.
It was funny how of all things I didn't miss that detail.
"I don't know what Chishiya is insinuating, but I have no idea what he's talking about," I said for the first time.
I opened my mouth to elaborate further when I was promptly cut off by Niragi storming over. I felt a pressure on my back that sucked the air out of my lungs. I couldn't speak even if I wanted to.
"Shut up now, or I'll cut your tongue out later," Niragi hissed while digging his boot into my back.
I held my breath. Was this how I was going to die? It felt like my ribs were going to snap from the sharp stabbing pain in the middle of my chest. It abruptly subsided when Niragi lifted his foot away.
He crouched next to me and grinned again. I was forced to look into his eyes when he grabbed my hair and Usagi's to lift our heads up.
"We are going to have some fun before I kill the both of you."
Niragi turned his attention towards the boy and directed his orders to the militants present. "Tie up the boy and blindfold him so he can't play a game. His VISA expires tonight, let him wonder when the laser is going to kill him," he laughed terribly and forced me and Usagi to our feet.
"Walk." He pointed the butt of his gun to our back to direct us out of the room.
My legs didn't immediately move. They were shaking, and it was like i was cemented to the ground.
I was suddenly on the floor again, my knees painfully hitting the ground. It appeared that Niragi had pushed me with his gun out of impatience.
I looked back at the room of executives, at Chishiya who had put me in this position. Chishiya made eye contact with me for the second time, and something undecipherable flashed in his eyes.
No, it was decipherable. It was satisfaction. This was my punishment. Death was the only suitable punishment for a traitor.
But I wouldn't die immediately. Tears pricked the corner of my eyes as I thought of it. Niragi would make sure that it would be painful.
Not to mention the fact that I was a woman. He could have his way with me--with Usagi too-- and nobody would blink an eye.
"Walk," Niragi repeated.
I walked.
Usagi and I were led to a hotel room and tied down while Niragi and his convoy followed.
His hungry eyes watched as I felt the chafe of the rope around my wrists. He leaned in, and my breath caught as he slowly trailed his tongue down Usagi's arm. No this could not be happening--
The TV screen now had lit up on its own. The weight of his body hovering over mine dissipated as he got off the bed to look at it.
10 OF HEARTS
GO TO THE LOBBY TO HEAR THE RULES OF THE GAME
"Fuck, right now?" Niragi turned to look towards us, and abruptly left the room.
I was untied by someone. Probably one of the militants out of pity.
Everything started to blur together.
I made it to the lobby with Usagi. There was a witch we had to find. The militants decided to kill and burn everyone. There were so many gunshots, so many screams.
The Beach was on fire.
I waited until I heard the game clear, and snuck into the lobby to see the last card.
I was surprised to find Chishiya there as well, his back to mine as he grabbed it from the table.
I pulled out a gun I had stolen from the body of a militant. The sound echoed through the now empty Beach as I cocked it.
"Don't turn around," I lowered my voice menacingly.
He turned around and stepped towards me.
"Or what?" His eyes were dancing with amusement as he kept walking. "You're going to shoot me?"
He was now standing directly in front of me. We were eye to eye, separated only by the distance of the gun I held.
Chishiya's warm hand overlapped mine as he pushed it to the side. He roughly grabbed my chin to force my mouth on his.
I froze as tingles still ran up my spine when he touched me. It was horrible, I hated him for what he had done to me.
What was even worse was how familiar he was.
I struck him on the head with the gun to break contact. He didn't fall, but now gingerly held the spot where I hit him. His hand that I had just touched now was slowly turning crimson from the wound.
"I hope we never meet again," Chishiya smirked and swiftly strode away from the flames.
It was then I realized he took the card with him.

Brains & Brawn- Chapter 9: Break
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You floored the pedal as soon as the game started. You thought it was better to get a head start, so you could overtake someone.
All the players around you did the same.
Since you had grabbed helmets, your kart was placed towards the middle. Thankfully you weren’t dead last.
You were grateful that you were the one who usually drove Tatta’s sports cars, so your driving skills weren’t as rusty as you thought. The go-kart felt almost as quick as the sports car, but handled turns not nearly as gracefully.
You were halfway through the first lap when a player in front of you crashed. You watched as one of the go-karts slammed into their side as they overtook them, almost deliberately.
You heard a whooping cheer come from that direction.
The kart that was slammed into spun before settling onto the side of the course, but now facing backwards. The player’s shirt thankfully was not swimwear. At least this wasn’t a player you were responsible for.
The thought hit you like whiplash, and you waved it away guiltily. You had to focus on completing the race.
You held your breath as you deftly maneuvered around a couple of close calls of crashing into either the side of the wall or another player, but you cleared the first lap of the race with 12 minutes left on the clock.
The minutes flew by, and you were actually enjoying yourself for once amidst these death games. Your second lap was even better than the first, with only one close call, and you almost felt like cheering when you cleared it.
The timer read 7 minutes.
The same could not be said for everyone: several players off to the side were hurriedly trying to fix their karts from crashes. By a miracle, no karts had flipped. ‘
Yet, it appeared that there was one kart who deliberately tried to slam into every one they overtook.
You tried to keep your distance from it as you watched it slowly climb through the rankings. You were one of the karts in the front, and it was getting closer and closer to yours.
Halfway through the second lap, the reckless kart was now right behind you. Fuck. You hadn’t planned on letting it come this close.
You drifted off to the side, hoping it would let you pass unscathed.
It didn’t.
You had braced yourself for the impact, seeing what it had done to the other karts, but it wasn’t enough. It pushed into your side, sending your kart spinning throughout the lane. Another kart also hit you as it passed, the driver squeaking a barely audible apology as it flew by.
You were torn side to side as the kart came dangerously close to flipping over. You gripped onto the steering wheel so hard your knuckles were white, and you were very close to panicking.
After what felt like hours, it stopped moving. But you were now faced in the other direction, with only a couple minutes to spare.
Double fuck.
You cautiously got out of the kart to spin it around. If you did it quick enough, you still had a chance to beat the racetrack in time– but now there was even less time.
You turned your gaze towards the kart which had done this to you. The driver was now crossing the finish line, whooping with delight. The kart pulled slowly off to the side, and the driver pulled off their helmet.
He had long, messy black hair that could only belong to one person you knew too well.
You swallowed the sickening feeling that arose in your stomach. Your hands trembled slightly but you barely noticed it.
Kuina was right. They all were right.
You heard the sound of quick footsteps behind you. There was a player sprinting on the race track, his upturned kart behind him.
When he saw you, he yelled, “Come on, run to the end! The rules never said you had to finish the race in a kart!”
He barrelled towards you, grabbing your hand when he saw that you didn’t begin to run immediately. You were still in shock from the betrayal.
Your legs were moving almost robotically as he dragged you along to the finish line. You hopped over the tires along the side like they were hurdles, taking shortcuts to reach the end quickly.
You crossed it together with 10 seconds left.
“Fuck,” your savior let go of your hand and keeled over with both of his hands on his knees. “That asshole got me right before he crashed into you. I thought all was lost until I remembered this was a hearts game. They usually have some twist.”
“Thank you,” you said quietly. You were also winded from running, but the sense of dread you had was almost enough to make you vomit. “I would’ve died if it weren’t for you.”
The player opened his mouth to say something further when Niragi came up behind him. He immediately walked away from you both, shooting a dirty look towards Niragi.
“(Name)! Hell I’m sorry, I didn’t see you there. I was just trying to pass you.” Niragi flashed what you thought was his version of an apologetic grin. He looked more proud if anything.
You laughed mirthlessly at his attempt at an apology.
“Me and those other people? How many did you crash into today, Niragi?” You turned your gaze back to the race track. There were at least 5 karts that were still on the track.
If you squinted, you thought you could see red puddles seeping from the bottom of each one. “I could’ve died like those– you killed all those people on purpose! I don’t want anything to do with you. Fucking walk back to the Beach for all I care.” You were so angry that you didn’t notice you were shaking again.
You heard Niragi try to say something, but your back was already to him. You grabbed the card, which was now resting on the table were the phones were before leaving.
Throughout the crowd of leaving players, you searched for tropical shirts. Thankfully there were two standing anxiously next to each other. They kept sending glances your way as they chatted.
“Come on guys,” you walked past them without waiting for a response.
“But Nirag-” one began to say.
“You should be thankful he didn’t fucking kill you. You can stay behind with him if you want”
That shut them up.
The drive back to the Beach was rather silent. Neither player dared to speak, sensing your bad mood.
All that kept replaying in your mind was the moment when Niragi took off his helmet after he finished the race.
Entering the Beach, the lobby was mostly empty for once.
“Bring this to Hatter, and tell him it’s from my group. If you don’t, I’ll know,” you lowered your voice threateningly and handed the card to one of your players before they could run off.
You caught a flash of white in your peripheral vision and turned to find Chishiya in his signature color lurking behind a column.
“Ah,” he said quietly. “Kuina exposed my secret earlier, it seems.” His eyes were glimmering with amusement, like he knew a joke you were missing out on.
You stopped to stare at him. He couldn’t possibly know about what happened. Unless–
“Did you know that Niragi would--” you trailed off as you studied his face.
“I have played games with Niragi before,” Chishiya said vaguely.
He still looked smug. There was something you were missing.
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I thought you would’ve known. You spend so much time around him after all.” Chishiya’s voice had a hint of irony in it. His eyes narrowed slightly as he spoke, and he briefly looked away at something behind you.
You turned around to find Niragi storming inside. How he got there so fast, you didn’t know.
“(Name) I can explain–” Niragi began to speak, but you immediately cut him off.
“What part of I don’t want anything to do with you, do you not understand?”
Niragi’s gaze flickered from you to Chishiya, and you noticed one of his fists clench. “It’s because of him, isn’t it?”
You let out an exasperated sigh at Niragi. You didn’t want anything to do with either of them really, but Chishiya was the much lesser of the two evils at this moment.
“You just can’t accept the fact that she doesn’t want to be around you,” Chishiya stated coolly.
“Fucker, this is between me and her.”
“I think she’s already made how she feels about you pretty clear.”
“Yes Niragi, go,” you interjected. His eyes widened slightly when you took Chishiya's side instead of his, and he looked back and forth between you two like you would change your mind. When you said nothing else, he stormed off silently without another word.
You turned your attention back towards Chishiya, who looked more self-satisfied than ever.
“This doesn’t mean anything is between us,” you said as he watched you silently.
“If you say so,” he hummed.
An’s group suddenly walked in, and a crowd of the Beach people entered with her. The room was full of cheers. She must’ve been the last one to return.
“An is so cool!” you heard someone shout.
“Ah. That’ll be Arisu,” Chishiya said before leaving unceremoniously.
Yet, even among the crowd, you still traced exactly where he was.
You watched as he found the boy called Arisu, and Chishiya leaned in to whisper to him something presumably important enough that he left you immediately.
Something that he didn't tell you.
You ignored the faint heart throb and walked back to your room alone.

Brains & Brawn- Chapter 8: Karts
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You were walking somewhere, anywhere that your feet would carry you. You fought the small amount of tears that started to roll down your face which threatened to become more.
You couldn't believe that Chishiya was willing to kiss you, but not mean anything by it. Your face was flushed with the humiliation of rejection.
Your vision was slightly blurry, which resulted in you almost stumbling into Tatta.
“Ah! I was looking for you,” he said awkwardly, looking relieved. “Hatter’s called an executive meeting right now.”
You thanked Tatta and made your way through the hotel to the upper floor where Hatter held his meetings. You felt a sense of deja-vu from the last time you had been there. The last time where this had all started, and you became entangled with Chishiya.
Hatter and the rest of the executives were already there. There were a couple of newcomers who were standing next to Hatter. It didn't escape your notice that they both had their hands tied behind their backs. Likely because they weren't immediately compliant with the Beach.
You took your place near the militants next to Niragi, who flashed a smile at you when you came in.
“You think Hatter got rid of that bastard?” Niragi whispered when you were close enough. You furrowed your brow in confusion, but it immediately became clear who he was talking about.
“Guess not,” he said when he saw Chishiya walk in casually. “Shit, hope he doesn’t take away your position.”
You smiled nervously back at Niragi but didn’t say anything as Hatter began the meeting.
“Executives! Glad you’re here! Now, I’ve called you all here because I’ve realized a solution to our pressing problem, and I also have a couple of new people here.” Hatter looked towards you and Chishiya expressively as you realized that one of the main points of this meeting was about both of you.
“So, from what I understand, you’ve been getting along swimmingly,” Hatter started with initially. You wanted to laugh at the irony of what had just transpired. If only Hatter knew that Chishiya didn't care.
You looked towards Chishiya to see his reaction, but he just blankly stared ahead of him.
“But, I think I’ve come up with a reasonable proposition. (Name) is one of the best executive group leaders at the Beach with the lowest casualty rate out of all of you, but Chishiya has never done so. Tonight, both of them will play and lead groups during the games. I’d also like to see Chishiya lead more groups.”
You flushed at the mention of your success rate in leading groups. Of course Hatter would consider this as a tiebreaker. But you had 5 days left on your visa, and you really didn’t feel like playing tonight.
“Hatter, I just played a game recently,” you said cautiously, not caring to mention that Chishiya was also in your group.
“Are you questioning my methods?” Hatter’s voice lowered dangerously, and you immediately regretted speaking out. Across the circle, An looked at you with pity in her eyes.
“Of course not Hatter. I look forward to playing,” you lowered your head submissively so he wouldn’t have reason to label you a traitor.
“Great! Now,” Hatter paused to turn his gaze meaningfully to the couple that were besides him. “I’d like to introduce you to some newcomers we have here. You said your names were Arisu and Usagi?”
The boy, Arisu, nodded fervently as he looked around the circle, his eyes settling on Chishiya. “You’re the one from the spades game!” he beamed in recognizing Chishiya like he could save them from their situation.
Chishiya didn’t respond but coolly watched Arisu. You thought that he looked as if he were making conclusions about something; he studied Arisu in the same way that he had watched people on the Beach from your balcony.
You knew that Chishiya was as likely to help Arisu as he was to be open with his emotions.
“Arisu also shows promise to be an executive, and he has brought the seven of hearts with him. I’ll have him go in a group with one of the executives today,” Hatter continued, ignoring the short exchange that just transpired.
A seven? You questioned how Arisu had even made it out alive of such a high ranked hearts game. But then again, Mira had cleared the nine of hearts somehow which earned her a highly ranked executive position.
Mira’s eyes gleamed, and she looked as if she were going to say something until a voice spoke up.
“He can come with me. I’m playing tonight,” An stepped forward without even glancing towards Arisu.
“Then that’s all settled? Executives are dismissed. I’ve already welcomed Arisu and Usagi to the Beach, but we have to go over some rules,” Hatter relayed to the rest of you, and you rolled your eyes at the mention of the Beach’s extensive rules.
You walked out silently, and didn’t feel like talking to Niragi. You hoped that Chishiya wouldn’t try to talk to you either. Or did you?
“(Name),” you heard someone behind you say. You swiveled around to find that it was Aguni addressing you.
“Yes?” you asked nervously. You couldn’t think of a reason Aguni had to look for you.
“Follow me,” Aguni said, and led you to an area where nobody could overhear you. You cocked your head to the side questioningly as you waited for him to speak.
“I think you should be careful around Niragi,” he said slowly.
“What?” You blurted before you could stop yourself. This was the second warning about Niragi you had received in a relatively short timeframe.
“Only regarding Chishiya. Try to keep the two separate at all costs, and don’t bring Chishiya up to him without warning.”
“Why? Did something happen?” you questioned, trying to figure out what had made Aguni get involved.
“I believe Niragi has taken a special interest in Hatter’s project with you two, and the relationship you’ve developed,” Aguni replied carefully. You felt that he wasn’t telling you everything based on his precarious tone.
“Alright,” you said finally. All these exchanges made you wonder how Niragi behaved when he wasn’t around you. It sounded like he became an entirely different person from whom you had once known him to be.
This was what the Borderlands was: it takes from you and warps the person you once were.
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The evening came before you knew it, and you waited in a hallway nearby for Hatter to start and finish his evening rousing speech. You had been avoiding everyone by hiding out in the shooting range. You felt Chishiya wouldn’t dare come, and he didn’t.
You didn’t know if you were more disappointed or frustrated by him.
You paced in the hallway anxiously, until you saw Kuina approaching you. “(Name)! Are you alright? I saw Chishiya earlier today and-”
The feeling of evil jealousy reared its head in your ugly chest, and before you could stop yourself you spoke almost automatically.
“Chishiya this, Chishiya that. I guess it’s good he talks to you,” you laughed sardonically and immediately regretted doing so. Kuina didn't deserve your frustrations about Chishiya.
“I’m so sorry about him. You didn’t even come spar with me. Listen, (Name), I don’t know exactly what happened between you two,” Kuina pulled out a cigarette that you didn’t see she was carrying and lit it.
You waited for her to begin speaking again as she inhaled the smoke. She leaned against the wall and sighed before continuing speaking.
“I also don’t know exactly how Chishiya feels, but from what I’ve seen I definitely think there’s something. Whenever you’re playing games, he watches you until you leave. He lurks around or sends me to find out if you’ve made it safely back."
You stopped pacing in shock, and took a shuddery breath in disbelief. You wanted to start crying again from the ill feeling that arose when you thought of your dysfunctional relationship with Chishiya.
He does care.
There was an unusual silence, which made you register that Hatter's speech had ended. “I have to go,” you told Kuina and she wished you luck in your game.
You found a place to stand and waved for people who were in group 9 to come towards you. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Chishiya was leading group 10. He was talking with Arisu for some reason, even though you thought Arisu was supposed to be playing with An.
You didn’t realize you were staring at Chishiya until Niragi came up to you and tapped your head with the sniper gun he carried playfully, awakening you from your reverie.
“Hey bitch! Daydreaming about someone?” Niragi greeted you.
“Niragi? Aren’t you supposed to be in another group?” You asked in confusion upon seeing Niragi. Occasionally the militants played together, but more frequently didn’t due to the power imbalance.
Hatter wasn’t very fond of a spades dominated player group, especially when you all had guns.
“Since Chishiya’s got to be in charge of one group, I don’t have to do so tonight. So I’ll stick with you, I’m sure to live,” Niragi smiled in amusement but you felt more panicked than anything. You would now see with your own eyes what the others said about Niragi.
Counting Niragi and yourself, there would be 7 people in your group playing that night. It was more than you usually had, and you felt the weight of the responsibility for keeping everyone alive drop on your shoulders.
Motioning for everyone to leave, you began to walk out towards the parking lot with Niragi chattering loudly about how many people there were to watch over. Before you left the Beach’s lobby, you turned back to see if what Kuina said was true.
And you felt a chill run down you after you locked eyes with Chishiya, who was indeed watching you leave.
You wanted to run over to him, and ask him why he kissed you. You wanted to ask him what you were to him. But most of all, you just wanted to talk to him again.
You tore your eyes away from him and focused back on the group you were with. You could now practically feel the burning gaze of Chishiya on your back as you walked out.
“Hey- don’t you agree that Hatter’s asking for a lot?” Niragi poked you in the side when he realized that you weren’t responding.
You sighed and clambered into the driver’s seat of one of the larger cars the Beach had to offer.
“Hatter always asks for a lot,” you duly responded, watching Niragi take the seat next to yours. You turned on the music of the car as the other players crawled into the back, so that Niragi would get the message that you would rather be alone in your thoughts.
The poor quality of the music faintly played as you arrived at the game venue. It appeared to be either an arcade, or a go-karting site. It was hard to tell when the moss and rampant plants grew over the sign of the building.
You entered the building with the others, and as everyone grabbed a phone for registration you saw the go-karts lined up, ready for a race. You drew your gaze to the go-karting course that lay before you, and felt a sense of dread build up. There were around 20 of them lined up, which already was a difficult enough number to race.
The course also was redesigned to be abnormally more difficult than anytime you’ve ever raced. There were tighter turns, and the course appeared to be much longer. You hadn’t been go-karting frequently, and you hoped that the game’s rules weren’t impossible to clear.
“Racing! Sounds fun,” Niragi grinned at you while all you could think was how awful and not fun this game was going to be. “I bet I can beat you,” he continued and pulled out a pair of driving gloves from his pocket.
“How the fuck do you have those?” There wasn’t any way Niragi could’ve known that this game was centered around driving.
“Ah, don’t you think they make me look sexier? I was actually planning on driving us here, but you took the seat so I didn’t say anything,” Niragi flashed the gloves at you, and you shook your head in disbelief at his stupidity. Before you could say more, the chime of the game began.
GAME START

WE STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO PICK ONE OF THE FIRST KARTS TO GET A HEAD START. HELMETS ARE PROVIDED ON A TABLE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROOM.
You watched as everyone in the venue either ran towards the first karts that were lined up on the course or went to grab a helmet. You gestured at everyone from the Beach to grab a helmet, but a couple went for the go-karts instead.
“Isn’t the helmet more important than the position? I’ve never been racing without one,” you said to Niragi as you both pulled one over your head. The helmets were running out quickly, and it soon became clear that there wasn’t enough for everyone.
“Doesn’t matter to protect your head, when you’re dead,” Niragi quipped and you both jogged back to the go-karts. You brought back a couple of helmets and handed them to the pair of Beach players who defied your instructions.
There were 3 minutes left until the race began. You strapped yourself into the go-kart and prepared yourself for the race. Why was the game hearts? You thought to yourself, bewildered by the suit of the game, but before you knew it, the game’s announcer spoke.

Brains & Brawn- Chapter 7: Kiss
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You woke up that morning half expecting Chishiya to be gone. No nightmares again you noted gratefully. The bed he slept in was neatly folded, but the sound of the running faucet in the bathroom made you realize he was still there.
You wrapped one of the thinner bed sheets around yourself and ambled to glance at the bathroom door. It was cracked halfway open and you could now see Chishiya fervently scrubbing his teeth with one of the Beach’s toothbrushes.
Upon seeing you, he attempted a form of acknowledgement but he couldn’t execute it successfully with the toothbrush still in his mouth. You burst out laughing and entered the bathroom to wait for him to be finished so you could brush your teeth.
Chishiya’s expression was unreadable, and after he finished swishing water in his mouth he left the faucet running. You stood up to use the sink, but not before Chishiya flicked water at you.
“The fuck?” You said abrasively as you blinked away the droplets. You weren’t sure if the act of splashing water towards you, or the fact it was Chishiya doing it was more surprising.
Chishiya softly chuckled and attempted to maneuver around you so he could leave the room. You did not plan on letting him leave without seeking vengeance. You cupped your hands to fill them with the water from the still-running sink, and reached up to dump it on his head.
You began to laugh again, pleased by your ill-earned revenge as Chishiya’s back was turned. He whipped around and you backed away from him, expecting another water assault. However, Chishiya simply followed you until your back was against the wall.
Chishiya was short compared to Kuina, but he was still taller than you. And he felt much taller as he cornered you in the shared bathroom.
Your breath caught as he inclined his head towards you. You didn’t feel like he was going to hurt you somehow.
You were sorely wrong.
You were so focused on him that you only noticed he held a plastic cup full of water behind his back when he dumped its contents on your head.
“I think I win,” he said coolly, and turned to leave.
“Fuck you,” you shouted to his back but he didn’t respond. The water dripping down your face reminded you of Chishiya’s true nature. Chishiya was as playful as a lion who had caught a mouse that it didn’t want to kill.
You slammed the door so you could shower, and continued to pout as the water trickled down your body. Chishiya was at least more than one step ahead of you with any game you played. You were glad at the very least he was civil with you.
You would’ve hated to be his enemy.
You finished showering, and changed into one of the swimsuits that you had left hanging in the bathroom. It was plain white with lace frills that stylishly embellishes the ties of the bikini, heavily contrasting with the black gun you kept by your side.
Chishiya was standing outside on the balcony, looking over the rest of the Beach. It was early morning so the noise wasn’t as loud as it was at night, but you could still hear the faint chatter of people from inside.
You joined him and watched him contemplatively as he continued his observations in silence. The wind blew a strand of his silvery hair across his face, and you wished to brush it away.
“Isn’t all of it so futile?” Chishiya broke the silence, nodding towards a couple who were passionately making out. “He looks like he’ll die in his next game,” he snorted in amusement.
“I think it’s nice to have a distraction. People have different ways of coping in tough times,” you replied as the man began to push closer to his girlfriend. “Maybe it’s even love,” you grinned wryly.
“A distraction,” Chishiya hummed thoughtfully.  “Do you think she has accounted for the possibility of him dying?”
You glanced towards the couple again, who now were getting quite intimate. “Gosh, Chishiya. Do you think about things like this all the time? How morbid. You know, you can do things without thinking about it.”
Chishiya paused for a brief moment before finally brushing the silver strand out of his eyes. “I prefer to avoid unpleasant outcomes.”
You slightly winced at the reminder of your own unpleasant outcome. “But you know,” Chishiya continued to your surprise. “You were rather impressive during that spades game. For a spades player, the way you got to the safe zone was ingenious.”
You smiled at the compliment. “I was honestly afraid that I’d get tagged and we would all die,” you confessed.
“So what?” You looked back to Chishiya in confusion as he leaned rather dangerously over the edge of the balcony. “We’re all going to die eventually.”
You laughed nervously and thought that he looked like he might jump over the edge if you weren’t there. “I wouldn’t enjoy dying, that's for sure, and I wouldn’t want to be responsible for all of your deaths either.”
“You wouldn’t have to live with the responsibility,” Chishiya said drolly, which drew another laugh from you.
“I guess I wouldn’t,” you smiled at Chishiya who gave you a faint grin to your surprise. You both fell back into silence. You looked through the crowds of the Beach players, and found that the couple you were discussing was gone. Chishiya did have a point; It would be awful if the person you cared about died.
You wondered how you would feel if Chishiya died. You felt affectionate towards him, but you hesitated to call it love. If he died, you would keep your executive position at least, and would go back to being alone in your room.
“I have to go,” Chishiya said suddenly and disappeared without further notice from the balcony. You stayed there on the balcony longer for no particular reason. You sometimes in the past liked to look out at the Beach, but you eventually became lonely seeing all of the couples. Chishiya’s absence reminded you of that familiar feeling of emptiness.
It was different though, because even if you weren't with anyone you weren’t exactly alone anymore.
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Kuina!” you smiled as you saw her leaning against the column while smoking. You were looking for her for another round of sparring. Your smile slightly wavered as you saw her talking to Chishiya rather intensely. He was speaking in hushed whispers to her and you couldn’t hear anything they said.
A flicker of jealousy fought to rise in your chest as you drew closer while observing them. You never saw Chishiya so friendly with anyone. You also recalled that Chishiya had shared your room-sharing situation with Kuina much earlier on.
“(Name)! Hiya!” Kuina gushed when you stood next to her. Chishiya gave a short wave as a greeting which you returned with one of your own.
“You up for sparring?” You asked Kuina nervously. She bobbed her head in agreement and started walking towards your sparring room.
“Sorry for stealing your girl,” she winked as an apology to Chishiya.
Chishiya rolled his eyes in reply.
“Have fun with my girl,” he drily mocked the terminology Kuina used to describe your relationship.
You ignored their exchange and continued to trail behind Kuina when you both passed Niragi in the hallway. Niragi had his arm around a different woman this time, and he raised his hand to wave at you.
You laughed to Kuina, “It seems like I’m seeing everyone today.”
Kuina rather didn’t look amused. She was horror-stricken at the sight of Niragi and her eyes darted to Niragi then back to you in astonishment.
“You’re– friends? You’re friends with Niragi? That Niragi?” She stuttered and covered her mouth with both of her hands.
“Yes?” You were confused at Kuina’s reaction to Niragi. You knew Niragi could be a prick, you hung around him. but you never saw your association with him warrant that reaction. But you never discussed Niragi before with anyone other than Chishiya, who didn’t comment on it.
“Niragi is horrible. Sincerely god awful. Have you seen the way he acts– especially in games? He’s like a sadist. I played with him once and I think he enjoyed killing other people,” Kuina said in a hushed tone as she watched Niragi turn the corner down the hall.
“Niragi?” You questioned doubtfully. From your last exchange, Niragi had made you feel unsettled but you didn’t think it was too this extent. You realized that he hadn’t played any games with Niragi since the six of spades either. Hopefully the Borderlands hadn’t turned him into a monster like other players you’d seen.
“Yes, Niragi! Seriously you should see how he plays games–Oh look, we’re here,” Kuina interrupted herself as you arrived into the room.
Kuina walked towards the middle of the room, and assumed her fighting stance. She made direct eye contact with you and spoke. “You know, I always feel like you’re holding back when we spar. It's a little weird. You’re not bad, but it’s like you’re deliberately altering your technique to minimize how hard you hit me.”
You froze in the entryway of the room and gripped the side of the door. You hadn’t expected Kuina to notice.
She smiled at you, and gestured for you to come in. “Come on, don’t be afraid! I understand, I have a similar problem but try at least.”
You walked to stand across from her, and tried to change the way you fought. But you still wanted to avoid hurting your friend, and to Kuina’s disappointment she ended up triumphing over you once more.
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You became more comfortable with Chishiya leading up to your shooting session on Tuesday. In the evenings, when you drank, you sometimes could convince him to drink with you. More frequently than not, he heavily sighed and took the poison you were offering him that night.
He elaborated on being a medical student, and you learned he was studying in a hospital that wasn’t so far away from the Beach. However, when you inquired about his family, he frequently brushed you off or changed the topic.
“It’s not significant,” Chishiya would say. You thought his parents would be significant, but the only thing he told you was that his father was also in the medical field. Eventually, you got the vague impression that his relationship with his parents was virtually nonexistent, so you stopped pressing the matter.
You told Chishiya about your former life, and occasionally cried when reminiscing on the family and friends you lost when you came to the Borderlands. Chishiya always watched the tears roll down your cheeks without saying a word, observing your misery quietly.
Tuesday afternoon, you met with Chishiya at the shooting range. You were true to your word, and alerted him for the last week when the militants weren’t there so he could practice his shooting. You weren’t exactly surprised to see he made little to no progress in aim.
“Chishiya, why are you standing like that? Look, do this.” You altered your stance to be the proper one for pistol shooting, and watched as Chishiya mimicked you marginally successfully. You then noticed that his handle on the gun was generally plain wrong.
“Here, let me show you how to hold it properly like this. I don’t think you’re making any progress with that grip.” You gently pried Chishiya’s fingers off the gun and readjusted them. You overlapped your hand with his to show him how to take aim properly. He flinched slightly but reluctantly let you touch him.
“Alright, now lean like this,” you demonstrated and Chishiya mimicked your movement. “Exhale, aim, and pull the trigger. Don’t overthink it. Just look at the target and pull.” You removed your hand from his and watched as he hit the target in the center for the first time with his pistol.
“Hey! You did it–” you trailed off as you noticed Chishiya smiling while watching you instead of the target. You tilted your head to the side hesitantly as he gently lay the gun on the floor.
“Don’t overthink, right?” Chishiya said, approaching you closely.
“Right,” you said breathlessly, remembering all the times you had said the exact thing to him.
Chishiya placed one hand on the side of your face and leaned in towards you. He smelled like faded peppermint, and soap. You closed your eyes and you felt his lips touch yours. It was like heaven for a moment.
Then, you felt the pieces shatter and wrestled out of Chishiya’s light grip. “Hey! What would you do that for? I don’t understand.” You backed away from him confused. He had never indicated any interest in you.
This move was the most uncharacteristic thing you’d seen from him, and the impulsivity of it was like something you’d do. Except you didn’t, because you were sure that Chishiya didn’t care much about you.
“What is there to understand? ” Chishiya’s voice felt condescending, which made you slightly ticked off.
“Everything- no, I just don’t understand. I don’t.” You stepped further away from him as you recounted his earlier commentary on couples. You locked eyes with him, silently begging him to explain that he liked you. That he meant something by it.
But he didn’t.
Chishiya just blankly stared at you, not responding to anything you had said. He seemed to be thinking about something far away from you.
His hands were fidgeting with the gun as he watched you drift further and further away from him. You felt a pang of disappointment as the silence grew longer and longer.
“I’m sorry Chishiya,” you eventually said softly. “But I don’t think we should meet anymore. You can still use the practice grounds if you’d like.” You quietly sniffled as you left him standing alone in the shooting range.

No but manga!Chishiya being compared to carnivorous plants during the ten of hearts and the way carnivorous plants only eat insects because the soil they grow on is so poor in nutrients. The way Chishiya was made to be what he is by the way he was raised. A childhood so devoid of human affection that the only human interaction he is capable of is manipulative and destructive. The way plants have roots and can never move away from the place they germinate and Chishiya really hasn't, either

Brains & Brawn- Chapter 6: Games
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You were filled with dread as the other team celebrated, now high-fiving each other in a group huddle.
If you had to guess, their odds of winning were much higher if they waited for you to run to free your teammates, and captured you instead of the flag.
The fastest one was definitely the smirking player, who had chased down the clubs player. His friend was the second fastest. The other two people seemed average, and not huge concerns.
You started to jog lightly to warm up your muscles. Your only feasible option was indeed to sprint across their side and tag two players with your hands. It would be close, but you could free two teammates before you were tagged.
The clock in the stadium read 50 minutes. You had time. The other team spread out across the field and watched you hungrily.
It reminded you of how Niragi killed animals in the six of spades. Your trail of thought deviated from the game briefly as you wondered what was wrong with Niragi. Where was the man who saved you during the nine of spades? You couldn't pinpoint the exact reason, but it was as if he lost himself. In this world, you didn't know if that was for the better.
You shook off your pondering and kept jogging. You had to concentrate on formulating a plan. Firstly, you should definitely try to avoid the fast players at all costs. You looked towards the field. He was standing on one end and his friend on the other. The two in the middle stood side by side, engaged in conversation.
Double fuck. It would be infinitely harder to try to go through the middle since there were two players there.
But would it? Finally, a plan came to mind, making you smile.
You took your time warming up your muscles and stretching. You needed to have all the energy you could for sprinting.
The team seemed to grow frustrated, trading wary glances at each other as they watched you. You nervously felt ready, and squeezed your hands together tightly.
“Hey ugly!” You yelled, pointing at one of the men in the middle.
“Me?” He replied angrily, seeming startled by your sudden call.
“Yeah, you! You look so disgusting you make me want to throw up.” With a deep breath, you calmly crossed the threshold dividing the two sides.
“Why you bitch! Get over here,” the man began chasing you. You jogged slower than your usual pace until he came dangerously close, and sped up. You ran around him in different patterns that brought him closer and closer to the boundary.
His teammates weren’t chasing you just as you had hoped. They seemed cocky that he would get you despite how slow he was, and were loudly cheering him on.
You finally crossed the middle line, and he followed you eagerly as you let him grab you.
“Tagged you bitch. Game over.”
He seemed puzzled when the game didn’t end. You didn’t give him time to contemplate the fact he was on your side, instead darting straight towards the middle at the other man.
The two fast runners were looking towards the timer in anticipation, not realizing your trick yet. You had a good 10 seconds to run as fast as you could before they caught on.
The remaining man in the middle looked surprised, but he started to run towards you. Now, all of the team was attacking you. When you were almost face to face with one of them, you slid on your knees under his waiting arm and stumbled up quickly.
You heard him bump into another runner when there was a crashing sound and swearing. Your teammates cheered and all stuck their hands out eagerly.
“Not so fast bitch,” you heard the smirking guy say as he tagged you.
But not before you grabbed Chishiya and the clubs player’s hands.
You pushed the clubs player and said out of breath, “Go to the flag!” He seemed confused but started sprinting to the flag as the smirking guy realized his direction and began to chase him. You stood in the jail with his girlfriend anxiously, watching as Chishiya followed the pair lightly jogging.
The rules never said that you couldn’t target the flag after being freed from jail. It actually insured your safety while doing so.
It was odd how nobody seemed to notice Chishiya. The man made it into the safe zone with Chishiya in tow. The smirking man swore, and met with his other groupmates. Your side wasn’t guarded at all, you realized nervously.
You watched as Chishiya whispered something to the man in the circle. He nodded. He started sprinting out towards your side. The team chased him while Chishiya walked over to you and tagged your hand. He handed you the flag, and whispered, “Run.”
You didn’t hesitate as the attention was still on the clubs player being chased. You saw him get tagged in your peripheral vision and get sent to jail. So Chishiya guessed it was also unsaid in the rules that the flag ruined your immunity.
You crossed the border and collapsed on your back.
GAME CLEAR
You closed your eyes as you heard the lasers come down from the ceiling.
—--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chishiya drove the car back to the Beach as you were too tired from running. He also had the five of spades card with him, which you nearly forgot.
You learned in the car that the woman was Jubi, and the clubs man was Suraku. The woman was rather mild-mannered, which reminded you heavily of Mira. She gave you the same uneasy feeling despite not saying much.
Suraku was more of the opposite, filling the car with boisterous jokes and trying to get you to laugh despite being so tired. Chishiya and Jubi were listening quietly, with Chishiya interjecting sarcastic remarks from time to time.
“Suraku, it hurts to breathe let alone laugh at your story,” you protested as he started telling you the story of how he almost got beat up over a violin.
“I’m sorry, but you have to hear this. So this guy, he’s like a year older than me I think. He was in my orchestra and thought that his viola was the violin in my hands, when it was clearly not–” you closed your eyes hearing Suraku’s voice trail off into the background. You stayed that way awash in the chatter of conversation until the car stopped.
The sound of the car door opening made you jolt upwards. “I don’t know about Jubi, but I know that I’ll be seeing you again,” Suraku said myseriously and left with Jubi.
You didn't feel like bringing the card to Hatter, and wanted more than anything to grab a drink.
“Could you bring the card to Hatter? I don’t feel like speaking with him.”
You left Chishiya in the car without waiting for his response and stumbled back to the room. You flopped backwards on the bed for a moment before clumsily pouring gin and vermouth together to make something that resembled a martini. You knocked back a glass right away, and poured your second one.
You were halfway through the second until you heard the door open, and Chishiya shuffled in.
“No update on the room situation with Hatter, apparently. He’s absolutely delighted at the fact that we haven’t killed each other. He said he’d even stop by,” Chishiya said while sighing in disbelief. You were glad that you hadn't had to talk to Hatter sober.
“Fuck Hatter. And his cards. Drink with me,” you poured another semi-martini in a glass and held it out to him. “I want to play a game, a real one.”
Chishiya and he looked distant for a moment. He absentmindedly ran his hand through his silvery blonde hair in a way that made you catch your breath. You thought he wasn’t going to drink until he tentatively took the glass from your hand, and brought it to his lips. You anticipated his reaction fervently.
“This is awful,” he said simply.
You slumped over in disappointment, but you knew he was right.
“It has a lot of alcohol, and that's fine enough. What drinking game should we do? Two truths and a lie?” you frowned at your own suggestion, and cut yourself off. “Nevermind that’s for highschoolers.”
“High schoolers?” Chishiya raised an eyebrow at what you were suggesting and sat down on his bed across from you.
Ignoring Chishiya’s inquiry, you continued, “Truth or dare. But just truths, because I’m afraid of what you’ll dare me to do. Take a shot when you don’t want to answer.” You finished your martini and poured yourself a third glass. The pleasant buzz of the alcohol started kicking in, and everything seemed humorous.
“Are you trying to get me drunk?” Chishiya seemed offended, but you didn't care. He was already humoring you by sitting with you.
“Maybe? I’ll go first,” you paused to think of a good question when it came to you. “Oh! Why were you an asshole to me when I was first shooting with you? Then you were really nice and took me for drinks, which was odd.”
Chishiya didn’t answer for an uncomfortable moment. He lifted the drink towards his mouth briefly, but lowered his hand. “I wanted to see if you would get emotional.”
You felt like there was an underlying reason he wasn’t letting you know, but he asked his question before you could ponder further.
“Have you ever considered leaving the Beach?”
The death to traitors rule instantly flashed across your mind.
“What are you playing at?” you asked angrily, jumping up in a rush because you weren’t sure if you had heard him right. “Why would you ask me that?”
It wasn’t a thought that you ever dared to have, because the price for being a traitor was paid in blood. You weren’t going to let Chishiya knock you out of your executive position by marking you as a traitor.
For a moment you thought you saw something that looked like uncertainty in his eyes. “Nevermind, it was just a thought that I wanted to confirm.”
You aimed to change the topic with a question for him, but were found it unusually difficult. You didn’t know anything about Chishiya.
“I have no idea who you are, what even were you before the Borderlands? Certainly not into anything athletic,” you mused aloud before breaking into laughter.
You watched Chishiya take a drink. “Hey! That’s not a hard question to answer,” you objected in vain. He grimaced like it was acid.
“You know what I don’t know about you?” He spoke carefully for once.
“What?” You found his tact very amusing, which made you drink more. Everything was so glorious. Why were you even stressed ever?
“What happened at the nine of spades?” he said softly.
You immediately stiffened and felt yourself sober a little. Obviously he was trying to find a way to ask that. Stupid you even brought it up earlier, probably reminding him.
However, the faint buzz of the alcohol was still there, and you felt like talking. You were so tired of keeping it bottled in. You could die anyday, and nobody would know of your sin.
“Like I mentioned earlier, it was my executive game in a park. Niragi was there supervising. It was a game where there was a tagger, and he was trying to kill us,” you paused to take a drink.
“The difficulty was a nine because the game would end when all players were dead, or the tagger was killed. Niragi and I both went in with guns but the tagger was unusually good. Immediately like 5 people died so we had to hide. I was separated from Niragi.” You felt your voice crack at the memory of sprinting for your life while hearing gunshots behind you.
You took a shuddering breath. “I found an angle to take a shot at the tagger. He was approaching this young girl, and was about to kill her. I took aim and fired. There was so much blood.” The blood seeped into the cracks of the sidewalk, staining it red.
“But the blood wasn’t coming from the tagger,” Chishiya interjected correctly.
You gave a low sob as the memory resurfaced. The sea of red, of course, was coming from her.
“Surely the tagger would’ve noticed you after you missed?” Chishiya questioned, wanting you to finish despite your tears.
You wiped away the wetness from your face and recovered your composure. “Of course he did. I would've died but Niragi fired at the same time, and killed the tagger. He told Hatter that I was the one who made the shot I would be promoted to an executive.”
You pitifully recollected the morning after Chishiya first reminded you of the game. “I used to have nightmares all the time about it, but they went away mostly. I think I was forgetting about it until you reminded me and brought them back. Now I’m so afraid of accidentally hurting someone.”
He paused thoughtfully, and reclined against the bed.
“You spar with Kuina,” he stated obviously.
You rolled your eyes. “That’s different. I used to do Karate. I still try to restrain myself so I don’t do anything extreme.”
“And you also drink yourself to death now? What a pity,” Chishiya didn’t elaborate further.
One final question dawned upon you amidst all his sarcasm.
“Have you killed anyone?” You asked nervously, but you felt like you already knew the answer.
He leaned close to you to flick the lamp off, and you felt your face flush. From the alcohol, obviously.
Chishiya’s brown eyes glimmered as he whispered, “Of course, haven’t we all?”
You were supposed to feel bitter. You were supposed to feel angry. Yet, somehow hearing him made you feel relieved instead. You weren't as alone.
Nobody knew about the nine of spades game except Niragi, and now, Chishiya.
The click of the light switch came without warning. You faintly saw the blurry outline of Chishiya recede away from you.
“I was a medical student,” he said as the room faded to black.

Brains & Brawn- Chapter 5: Spades
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You watched Chishiya rest for a bit while trying to blink away the throbbing hangover feeling  you had. He looked incredibly vulnerable, you thought.
This was the first time both of you had slept overnight in the room. You almost laughed at the irony. First, it was you avoiding Chishiya. Then it was him awkwardly trying to give you space until he bribed you with drinks.
He was a man who knew the way to your heart.
The sun reflected off his face in a way that made him look heavenly. It felt sinful to admire him while he wasn’t aware of it. The light highlighted his blonde hair, which you noticed was dyed by the black showing his roots growing in.
He was so easy on the eyes that you felt your face start to flush. You almost forgot the cruelty he once showed you. You chastised yourself for this, you may have let him buy you drinks but you weren’t going to harbor a crush for a man like this. Right?
You tentatively hopped out of bed, trying your best to be quiet. You rummaged through your closet for a change of clothes, before settling on an all black two-piece bikini with a sheet cover-up. You heard Chishiya start to stir.
You turned to watch as he silently opened his eyes and blinked at you.
“Good morning,” you said awkwardly.
He ignored your greeting, and looked around the room. He seemed faintly surprised that he was there for some reason.
“I didn’t mean to stay here,” he finally said.
“It’s expected. I mean Hatter wanted us in this situation, it’s more surprising it didn’t happen earlier,” was your reply.
“I only meant to bring you back here. It was late, and I had been drinking so I wanted to rest before leaving. I didn’t plan on staying overnight.” Chishiya seemed truthful for once, and looked as awkward as you felt.
You decided to relieve Chishiya from the awkwardness of the situation by letting him know he could stay with you. You had avoided each other long enough, and he proved he could be civil with you. However, you mostly decided on this because you felt the threat of Hatter looming overhead.
It would be unpleasant if Hatter found you were disobeying his orders, and it was pure luck that you hadn’t had an executive meeting or run into him recently. Sure you were impulsive and did things before thinking, but you weren’t stupid enough to keep defying Hatter.
“Chishiya, you don’t have to avoid this room. We were forced into this situation, but we should try to make the best of it and be civil roommates.” You said as you walked to the coffee-maker to boil water.
Chishiya looked contemplative, but a slight smile grew on his face. His smile was perfectly fine, you noted, thinking of how Kuina compared it to a grimace earlier. More than fine actually. “Alright,” he said.
He went to sit at the desk, pulling out the taser he was working on.
“Did it get broken?” you asked out of curiosity.
He hummed in agreement. “At my last game.”
You left him as you went to find Kuina to spar with. To your surprise, you ran into Niragi with a woman on his arm.
“Hey! If it isn’t my favorite bitch,” he said, as if oblivious to the other woman.
You watched as she wrenched herself out of his grip, shooting you both a dirty look as she stormed away.
“Niragi! The same goes for you,” you smiled, looking for a topic to converse over. “How have your games been?”
Niragi’s face darkened briefly before he mimicked your smile, but it was too uncanny for someone who constantly risked their life in sadistic games. “Good— actually, pretty fucking amazing. I’ve never felt better.”
As he spoke, a chill of fear that was never there before rushed down your spine. He was too excited over it, and you saw a hungry look in his eye that you never noticed before.
“T-that’s great! I have to participate tonight in leading a group. My visa is expiring soon,” you stuttered, hating yourself for it.
“Hah! Sounds fun. Speaking of fun— how have things been going with blondie?” Niragi laughed at his nickname for Chishiya.
“It’s getting better. I think.”
“I bet 15000 yen that he sleeps with you.”
You were taken aback at Niragi’s suggestion. Seeing the look on your face, he continued sarcastically, “What? He’s a man sharing a room with a beautiful woman.”
You hit the back of his head playfully before he could say more and walked to find Kuina in the area she usually smoked at.
——————
You waited with the rest of the masses for Hatter to finish making his rousing speech for the Beach’s players participating in games that night. You had to admit, you hated Hatter but he was extremely good with crowd control.
He finished speaking, and players started splitting into groups. Hatter usually divided groups into 4 or 5, with one of each speciality composing a group to make it balanced, as well as a supervising executive.
You watched as a couple meandered over to your group. “#9?” they asked, and you nodded.
There should be one more you noted, and then you saw a familiar blonde making his way over to you. You watched in disbelief as he stood next to you calmly.
“Are you in group #9?” the woman in the couple asked.
Chishiya nodded, and cooly looked towards you. He made four players, and it didn’t look like anyone else was joining.
“Alright, let’s get this started,” you said and led them all to the convertible.
You were grateful that Tatta had such good taste in cars, and you drove to the game venue quickly. The car ride was spent in uncomfortable silence only broken by murmurs of the couple in the back. Chishiya was sitting shotgun next to you, and he was gazing out the window the entire ride.
You entered the venue with everyone, which took place in a high school football field with a line dividing the two sides. There were four phones left on the table when you entered, and four players who had already joined were waiting. You each reached for a phone.
GAME START
DIFFICULTY: FIVE OF SPADES
[CAPTURE THE FLAG]
NO WEAPON USE
TIME: 60 MINUTES
RULES:
PLAYERS MUST SPLIT INTO TEAMS OF FOUR AND PICK A SIDE OF THE FOOTBALL FIELD.
THERE IS A FLAG ON EACH SIDE WITH A CIRCLED SAFEZONE AROUND IT. EACH TEAM MUST TRY TO GET THE FLAG FROM THE OTHER SIDE. THE GAME IS CLEARED ONCE A TEAM GETS THE FLAG FROM THE OTHER SIDE AND BRINGS IT TO THEIRS.
OUTSIDE OF THE FLAG’S SAFEZONE, ONCE THE PLAYER CROSSES INTO THE OPPOSING TEAM’S TERRITORY THEY MAY BE TAGGED BY AN OPPONENT. TAGGED PLAYERS GO TO ‘JAIL,’ A ZONE BEHIND THE FLAG.
THEY MUST REMAIN IN ‘JAIL,” UNTIL A TEAMMATE TAGS THEM, AND ONLY FREED JAILED PLAYERS CAN WALK BACK TO THEIR SIDE SAFELY. THE TEAMMATE WHO TAGGED THEM CAN STILL BE TAGGED.
IF ALL MEMBERS OF ONE TEAM ARE IN ‘JAIL,” IT IS GAME CLEAR FOR THE OTHER TEAM.
ALL PLAYERS WILL BE ELIMINATED IF THERE IS NO CLEAR WINNER BY THE TIME LIMIT.
“So there’s two strategies,” Chishiya looked faintly amused after the game’s rules were read. “Go for the offensive and try to get the flag from the other side–”
“--Or tag all players from the other team,” a man that wasn’t from the Beach finished Chishiya’s sentence. He smirked wickedly at Chishiya, and turned to team with his friend.
“All from the Beach form a team?” you questioned, but it wasn’t really a question. The couple nodded, but Chishiya didn’t respond. “Chishiya?”
He sighed like he was doing you a favor, and resigned himself to be part of your team. You took the left side of the football field and waited for the rest of the players to walk on the right side.
While waiting, you found that the woman from the couple was a hearts player while her boyfriend played clubs.
“I’m not particularly good at anything,” he explained and winked, “But I have a knack for surviving.”
“I think we should just rush the other side as soon as the game starts,” you said slowly. The couple looked unsure, and you didn’t see Chishiya’s reaction. For you, it made the most sense. There was no better opportunity to catch the other team off guard, and you could end the game quickly if one of you made it to the flag zone.
“Is anyone here good at running?” Chishiya asked. You and the man raised your hands. You weren’t surprised at the implied lack of athletic prowess from Chishiya.
“Her and I,” Chishiya pointed at the woman, “Will serve more as distractions for the other team. (Name) and your boyfriend will focus on targeting the flag.”
“But what about the flag? If the other team does the same, someone should guard it,” the man protested. He didn’t seem too eager about being sent into the lion’s den. It was a smart thought from him, you noted frowning. You would have sent everyone from the team to the other side without a thought.
“Then a sprinter should stay to chase them down. (Name) should do it,” Chishiya replied. The man exhaled with disappointment. It was now clear that he wished to stay on this side. You realized that you didn’t know the names of the other players.
“Hey what are your names–” You were interrupted by the game start sound before you could continue talking further, and you watched as everyone rushed to the other side.
The other team wasn’t expecting the sudden attack, but even still the woman was chased down easily. You watched as Chishiya was targeted by the smirking guy from earlier. Chishiya was jogging lightly, but somehow hadn’t gotten tagged yet.
You turned your attention to the man who was supposed to be targeting the flag. He was almost there. So close. You almost cheered. You watched as his foot was about to step into the safe zone when he was suddenly yanked back by the smirking player.
How? He was targeting Chishiya. You drew your gaze to see Chishiya already heading towards the designated jail area where the woman was waiting.
With horror you realized that you were the only player standing on your side. The only player standing between life and death for you and three other people.

Brains & Brain: Chapter 4: Nightmares
Tumblr media Tumblr media
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You repeat in your head, a shooter, before you’re overwhelmed. The gunshots are all you can hear, and reality starts to distort as your ears ring. “Run!” a woman in heels screams before she’s gunned down. You barely stumble behind a car before the shots hit the spot where you just were.
Everything is so dizzy, you can’t keep steady. The scene before you blurs as you hear the screams of agony of a man on the floor. There’s a bullet hole in his chest, yet he’s still screaming. It’s clear to you that he wishes he was dead like the shooter next to him.
You’re standing with a gun pointed out. Your hands are shaking as you follow the trail of the gun to the man on the floor. He’s looking at you, swearing something inaudible as the world keeps spinning.
You think that you’re going to fall through the cracks until you feel the hand of Niragi behind you. He grabs your shoulder and says something inaudible. You turn around to look at him when he vanishes. The bloodied man is in his place with blood streaming down his face. He’s screaming in your face and you cover your head, wishing for it all to end.
With a jolt, you startled awake. Your head is pounding from the hangover from the other night. You wanted to drink to avoid it, but Chishiya’s reminder of the game triggered your nightmares again.
Just when you started to forget, he brought you back to hell.
You turned to the second bed that now occupied your room, half expecting to see Chishiya lying there. The sheets are neatly folded like nobody had ever been there. The starch of the sheets was ironed as if it were new.
At least Chishiya had the decency to leave you alone.
You changed your swimwear, and walked towards the fitness center to blow off some steam. You wanted to feel the physical burn of your muscles to replace the emotional anguish you woke up in.
As you walked, you noticed a woman in blue swimwear leaning against a column watching the direction you came from. She smoked a cigarette, and locked eyes with you.
She approached you, and waved like you were a familiar friend. This was the first time you had ever seen her in your life.
“Hi there! You’re (Name), right?” she grinned like there was an inside joke you were missing.
“Yes,” you said tentatively, unsure about her demeanor. “I’m (Name). And you are?” Your voice trailed off in confusion.
“Wow, he didn’t mention me at all.” the woman murmured under her breath. She was so quiet you almost missed it.
“I’m Kuina! I’ve heard you’re like the spades player! I’ve been looking for someone to spar with. I used to do Kyokushin Karate in the real world, and I feel rusty.”
Her warm tone and friendliness relieved your uneasiness, but you still felt that there was something missing. You shook off the feeling and smiled at her. To you, she seemed like a genuinely good person, so there shouldn’t have been any reason to feel that way.
“I’m not really that great, I’m the lowest ranking executive after all. I just clear spades here and there. I just like to keep my physical fitness up in my free time. I haven’t practiced Karate really in a while. I stopped in college because I didn’t have time,” you replied.
“There’s always time to shake the rust off! Come on, I know a place to practice” Kuina said and linked arms with you, guiding you towards an empty room you hadn’t known about.
You chattered pleasantly with her throughout the way, and you felt a friendship begin to form between you two. The anxious feeling from your stomach lessened with every step you took until you entered the room.
Kuina abruptly detached your arms to assume a fighting stance and smiled at you expectantly. “Well?”
You mimicked her stance, and laughed lightly. “Don’t expect much from me,” you warned.
“You can’t be that bad!” was Kuina’s reply.
You hoped you weren’t.
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------
After losing to Kuina, you rubbed the parts of your body that were aching. You weren’t awful, you were just very out of practice with sparring. It made you feel better to release some steam after fighting with Kuina. The nightmare felt like a distant memory.
Kuina apologized for injuring you, and said, “Hey! You were pretty good for being rusty.”
You fought to grin but all you could manage was a disturbing grimace.
Kuina saw the expression on your face and burst out laughing. “God, you look like Chishiya when he tries to be nice!”
You froze at the mention of Chishiya’s name. Kuina noticed when you did and cursed under her breath. “I’m sorry, shit I wasn’t supposed to say that.”
“Say what?” you questioned. You had no idea how Kuina was involved with Chishiya, and you weren’t sure if you wanted to know.
“Um,” Kuina paused as if thinking about what to say next. “I like you, so I’ll be honest. I’m not exactly sure what happened between you two, but Chishiya told me to meet you here.”
“Why would he do that?” you prompted Kuina to continue.
“He vaguely said that you would need a nice person to be around, and he said if we reached an um cordial- his words not mine- point, to deliver a message. He wanted to express that he regretted the words he said to you.”
You immediately began to laugh at the way Chishiya apologized. “He couldn’t say this himself?”
Kuina cracked an uneasy smile. “I know you don’t know Chishiya that well, but he has his own ways of doing things. I don’t think he’s ever apologized for anything his entire life to be honest.”
A thought suddenly struck you after Kuina spoke.
“Kuina,” you said slowly. “Do you know that I’m sharing a room with Chishiya?”
Kuina’s smile slowly faded to horrified. “You? You’re the one who he’s rooming with? Oh my god.” She took a couple steps away from you and covered her mouth with her hand.
“He said that he was being considered for an executive position, and that Hatter made him room with someone, but he never told me who! God I’m so sorry,” Kuina said, looking truly apologetic. “Let me take you out for a drink tonight.”
You shook your head, your faint headache serving as a reminder of that morning. “I have a hangover,” you explained at her confused look.
“And I made you spar with me! Some other time then,” Kuina offered. She made a motion like she was looking at a watch, but there was nothing on her wrist. “Look at the time, I have to go!” she said and quickly darted away before you could say anything.
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the next week, Chishiya didn’t enter the room you shared. You weren’t sure if you were disappointed or relieved. Kuina was true to her word, and brought you to the Beach’s bar a couple days later. She showed up at your room without explanation, and dragged you to the bar.
It was a pleasant experience because Kuina was so nice, but you did notice that she didn’t bring up Chishiya again.
You woke up Tuesday morning to find Chishiya sitting at the office chair where you first met him. You instinctively grabbed blankets to cover yourself but he didn’t turn your way.
Hearing the movement from your bed, Chishiya broke the silence of the morning before you could even process his presence. “I’ve been reading on shooting techniques, and I’ve concluded that without proper time commitment, I am essentially a lost cause.”
He paused before continuing. “Meeting once a week won’t be suitable for me to become experienced enough to be useful in an actual situation.”
You blinked before the gravity of his words hit you. Chishiya wasn’t acknowledging what had happened last time you met, or Kuina. He was only focused on his ability to learn how to shoot. It was like your feelings didn’t matter, and he only prioritized the amount of time it took for him to become decent with a gun.
“So you want us to meet more frequently,” you said slowly. You weren’t sure if you could handle him in large doses.
To your surprise, Chishiya shook his head. “Only Tuesdays are fine. I would appreciate being able to go in my free time.”
His statement made you more uneasy. The shooting range was only for militants, and Chishiya wasn’t even supposed to have access to guns. He could get you in trouble if he were caught by someone.
“I could tell you when the militants are playing games, but that’s the best I can do for you,” you said.
Chishiya nodded. “That’s more than fine. I’m aware that this is a large ask after the last time we met. If you would let me, instead of meeting to shoot today I’d like to meet with you in the evening at the bar.”
You didn’t want to guess how Chishiya knew that you frequently hung around the bar. Maybe he got the idea from Kuina. You thought that this was another way to express that he felt remorse for his actions, and you weren’t going to deny him the opportunity to buy you a drink.
“I’ll meet you later,” you said, and he walked out of the room.
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chishiya stopped by like Kuina, without warning or knocking, and you silently followed him to the bar.
“The usual?” the bartender asked you when you sat down. You nodded at him, and Chishiya said that he would be getting the same.
“How do you know what I’m getting?” you asked Chishiya, wrinkling your brow.
“I don’t.”
You sat in silence before the bartender brought you both your drinks. As you sipped your martini, you felt that it became unbearable. You decided to offer Chishiya a vague explanation.
“When I played the nine of spades, that was my hardest game I’ve ever played. It was how I met Niragi,” you said, and downed your entire drink shortly after.
Chishiya looked contemplative at what you had just said. “Any game with Niragi would be difficult,” he said dryly, earning a laugh from you.
“Niragi isn’t that bad, he’s just a little dramatic sometimes,” you smiled and ordered another drink from the bartender. You thought fondly of Niragi, but for some reason you hadn’t really run into him recently. Every time you saw him he made weak excuses to go, and he always seemed eager to leave any conversation.
“Is the nine of spades how you got your executive position?” Chishiya asked, abruptly interrupting your train of thought.
You nodded and squeezed your glass nervously. “It was. I don’t know if it was worth the price.”
You fell into silence with Chishiya once more, and the bartender brought over drink after drink. Anytime you were reminded of the nine of spades, you drank more than usual. You talked lightly with Chishiya about your life before the Borderlands, and he didn’t say much. The lack of banter seemed odd.
It was like he became a completely different person overnight.
He was a very good listener, you realized. You became less and less aware of what you were talking about as you drank more.
You thought that at some point you got up and started walking. You felt a couple pushes of hands steading you. It was like walking through a mirror maze, but less fun.
Everything blurred together until it was morning again, and you woke up in your room without feeling anything. No nightmares, you thought gratefully. The problem with not having any nightmares was that you had to be practically black-out drunk to achieve it.
But if you were that drunk, somebody had to bring you back. You turned to the right to find Chishiya sleeping in the second bed in your room, his face tranquil and relaxed.
A/N: I realized this chapter is super long compared to the others!! I actually mapped out the plot chap by chap so now the chapters are going to be longer :)

I will never stop loving the fact that Chishiya is canonically short king with slight god complex.
