"if i was orpheus i would simply not turn around" yes you would. if you were orpheus and you loved eurydice, you would. to love someone is to turn around. to love someone is to look at them. whichever version of the myth — he hears her stumble, he can't hear her at all, he thinks he's been tricked — he turns around because he loves her. that's why it's a tragedy. because he loves her enough to save her. because he loves her so much he can't save her. because he will always, always turn around. watching edmonton hadestown and thinking about how when orpheus and eurydice meet and she asks “who are you” he says “I’m orpheus” and she asks “and I should care because?” and he says “because you’re eurydice” like. almost as if he knows their story and it’s inevitable because it’s happened before and no matter the details it starts and ends the same. like all the productions of hadestown with their different lyrics and tones and colours that tell the same story because there is only one story and it’s the story of orpheus&eurydice. he’s orpheus. she’s eurydice. that’s all it is and everything at once

Hadestown’s first performance after the broadway shutdown.

every year it’s getting worse.  hadestown,  HELL ON EARTH.

tragedy as a genre asks us repeatedly “why did this have to happen?”. why did medea kill her children? why did lear reject the only daughter who truly loved him? why cant estragon and vladimir simply walk away? we can accept the idea that these are events made inevitable by some facet of the characters personalities. we can argue that circumstances forced their hand. but ultimately we dont have these answers and thats why i think tragedy. is a genre so given to retellings and repetition. the why is tantalizing — maybe if we play it again, we can figure out where it went wrong. so anyways as always we’re back at hadestown’s “its a sad song, but we sing it anyway. to know how it ends, and still begin to sing it again, as if it might turn out this time …”

I had a great time regretting whatever shape I gave Hades in the first part, but things worked out in the end! (aka side-stepped the issue by tilting that rectangle away)
