Now that I've gotten your attention, well it's actually the seed inside that's illegal and this "fruit" is call a Tonka bean. It contains a chemical compound called "coumarin" which gives it its distinct flavour, and high doses of that stuff can actually kill you. Growing up in Grenada we had a tree close to our house we use to eat the fruit but discarded the seeds.
