the idea that restrooms, locker rooms, etc need to be single-sex spaces in order for women to be safe is patriarchy's way of signalling to men & boys that society doesn't expect them to behave themselves around women. it is directly antifeminist. it would be antifeminist even if trans people did not exist. a feminist society would demand that women should be safe in all spaces even when there are men there.

Okay hang on everyone I need to say something super weird:
Sometimes I look at old pictures from the 1970s and the only thing I can think of is "did the world really look like that?" Because, you know, it looks different. Something about the colors, which means it's something about the light. The world in the picture just doesn't look like the one outside my door. It's different. Really different.
But then I think that makes no sense. It's gotta just be camera technology or whatever, right? Sure, trees are taller or gone, and the road's been repaved a few times, but the sun is still the sun so things can't be that different right?
Well, apparently, WRONG!
Because I swear, I saw these pictures and had the same feeling. But I was around in 2006, and this picture is what it looked like! And yet I still feel like this isn't how the world looks outside my door right now in 2024.
Anyone know what I mean? Anyone else get it? Somebody must have studied this feeling. Is it just weird nostalgia of some kind? It's just such a clear, strong feeling, and now that I'm getting it about pictures from when I was alive, I don't know what to make of it anymore. Fascinating.
2006

I hate the “open floor plan” that everyone is obsessed with in houses now. I want nooks and crannies and bizarre floor plans. I don’t need to be able to see what someone is doing on the other side of the house. I want places to hide and lurk and dwell in the shadows. I am the beast who awaits in the labyrinth
