How do I maintain my daughter's ambition through the teenage years?

I was once talking to my friend Lux on Twitch about a book I had read titled Reviving Ophelia.

The book followed the clients of psychologist Dr. Mary Pipher (the author) describing a common arch from the girls' childhoods filled with big dreams, to their isolated and crushed teenage years.

The author proposed that modern culture charishes and promotes autonomy and ambition in pre-teen girls but doesn't do enough to maintain it into adulthood.

Lux said she related with the phenomenon in an intense and tragic way.

I have a 7 year old daughter. I'm hoping that if I can help her develop a solid network of close friends, she will have resilience to the Ophelia tendency.

Also, I want to expose her to media featuring high school age female protagonists. I'm hoping for something like "Nella the Princess Knight" but 17.

So far my list includes "Bring It On" (2000), "The Fault in Our Stars" (2014) and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1992). Can anyone recommend other similar movies?

I love the way we celebrate and encourage power in young girls. I wish we could do more to protect that in the teenage years.

NULL is not equal to anything including itself. Null is a handy default value for when you have existing records and you want to expand the table to add new columns. If you had to fill in the old records with a regular value like zero then the old records couldn't be unique and that could cause problems. For example, if you know a lot about dinosaur taxonomy and someone asks you "What is the clade of a tyrannosaurus?" your best answer may be null because the idea of a clade was introduced after you learned about tyrannosauruses. Your answer is not the same the answer to "What is the clade of a stegosaurus?" but the concept and form of your answer is. Generally, null is not a number but it can be the answer to a mathematical question.

The situation in Gaza is an incredible mess. We could all dig in and "Stand with Israel" or "Stand with Gaza" if we want. However, that really won't change anything or further the goal of peace. I think we should try to envision a sustainable future. In my opinion having laws which give some people special privileges based on religion is counterproductive to that goal. That said, I'm an open minded person and when I'm wrong I'm ready to pivot.

An Apology

About 2 weeks ago I posted an art gig on Tumblr. There, my price estimate was probably off by a factor of 5.

I hadn’t really thought about it. If the gig is like a part time job and you are not working weekends and my timeline was 512 hours and my budget was $512 that would be about $5/hour. I’m kind of embarrassed about that.

In this repost, I’m boosting the price to 150% and asking for 1 image instead of 3.

With this adjustment it’s more like $16 an hour. I know $16/hour isn’t great in 2024, but the timeline isn’t certain. If you can get it done in 256 hours (about 10 days) instead of 512 hours (about 20 days), then you would be making $32/hour.
