andrew, on his meds, pacing wymackās living room: okay so itās like seven minutes in heaven, but seven minutes in hell and you put 2 people in a closet together for seven minutes and they have to beat the absolute fuck out of each other.
wymack, glaring: minyard itās 4 am. get out of my house.
neil, from the couch: no, wait i think heās on to something

Sometimes Iām having a good day but then I think about how during Baltimoreā¢ Andrew thought that Neil had run, again, and that Andrew had let his guard down just to be hurt, again, but then he saw that stupid little bag and those stupid little keys and he knew, he knew his little rabbit didnāt run this time.
Then I think about how Neil told Andrew that day to stop protecting him and how Andrew probably thought that Neil knew this was going to happen and a little nagging part of Andrews mind was probably telling him that Neil told him to stop to protect Andrew
Really just thinking about the entire Baltimore partā¢ makes me want to kms

neil josten is constantly reminding himself of the amount of time he has left. how many weeks until exy is no longer a possibility for him. how many days until he has to abandon his foxes and move on to another state, another country. how many minutes until he ultimately has to say goodbye to neil josten and completely alter his identity. he cannot afford to lose track of time because he knows he does not have much left. and yet, when he kisses andrew:
āTime was nothing. Seconds were days, were years, were the breaths that caught between their mouths and the bite of Neilās fingernails against his palms, the scrape of teeth against his lower lip and the warm slide of a tongue against his.ā

It's funny to re-read AFTG and try to track down Neil's list of priorities in the time frame of the three books. If you pay attention, his priorities slowly change and evolve, and I'm pretty sure it goes something like this:
THE FOXHOLE COURT - first half.
1. His life.
2. Exy.
3. Everyone else (including the foxes' lives).
THE FOXHOLE COURT - second half.
1. Exy (decides to stay even if it'll kill him).
2. His life (he's willing to let Andrew die for him, he doesn't care for Seth's death).
3. Everyone else.
THE RAVEN KING - first half.
1. Exy.
2. His life.
3. Foxes as a team (will defend them and risk his safety to do so but won't die for them).
4. Andrew (he notices things, starts to wonder, grows closer to him: he's the only one who matters to him as an actual individual I think. The others are growing on him, tho).
THE RAVEN KING - second half.
1. Andrew (we all know what happens. He even states that he would rather lose the season than let Andrew continue on his drugs).
2. Exy.
3. His own life.
4. The foxes.
THE KING'S MEN.
1. Andrew (actively trying to make him break their deal so he won't die and won't feel guilty when Neil does).
2. The foxes (starts referring to them as his friends, his family).
3. Exy.
4. His own life.

Neil Josten is so selfless heāll protect others even if it costs him the identity heās been working for years to hide and heāll put his problems last and will try to fix all of his teammates even though heās himself barely hanging on. Neil Josten left for the nest without a second thought when he heard Andrew was in danger and would willingly put himself through torture if it meant his friends would be safe at the end of the day. Neil Josten left to die withĀ āThank you, you were amazingā because he needed to tell Andrew that this wasnāt his fault, and that, despite it all, he didnāt regret anything and would do it again and iām so sad i love Neil Josten

AFTG is a slow burn BUT not the first time you read it only the next ones. The first time you read it itās simply a sport fiction with found family and then BANG ādoesnāt mean I wouldnāt blow youā and you are as surprised as Neil is

the most unrealistic thing about all for the game isn't the mafia or the sports its the fact that aaron and andrew are fluent in the language they took in high school

Love that AFTG is from Neil's POV. If it was from Andrew's POV it would have been this dramatic slow burn/unrequited love story about Andrew balancing his feelings for the new kid with his past trauma while said new kid is utterly oblivious to it. Also exy is there. And the mafia. But instead we see it from Neil's POV who gives the same level of importance to his mob boss serial killer father who is after to him to exy and to Andrew. One chapter is like "graphic description of Neil being tortured by the mafia" then the next is "Andrew and Neil have a homoerotically charged conversation on the roof" and then the next is "the Foxes play a game of exy" and every single one is treated with the same degree of respect because that's just what Neil's like. Amazing.
