i hope that the discussion about student protests does not get reduced to "privileged rich kids faffing around at an ivy league school." setting aside that tenuous claim, over the last week, protests have erupted over the entire country. a few days ago, riot police beat, pepper-sprayed, and arrested NYU faculty shielding students; protests started at the university of southern california when the admin cancelled the valedictorian's speech; encampments appeared at the university of southern carolina, UT dallas, the university of maryland, the university of new mexico, IUPUI, virginia tech, the university of virginia, the university of illinois, the university of north carolina — chapel hill, the university of pittsburgh, uc berkeley, the university of michigan — ann arbor, MIT, emerson, tufts, the university of rochester, rice, swarthmore, the new school, vanderbilt university, with students arrested; students protested or walked out at miami university, northwestern, temple, the 5 claremont colleges: pomona, pitzer, scripps, harvey mudd, and claremont mckenna, stanford, washington university in st louis, students were arrested at ohio state, students were confronted by riot police at cal poly humboldt, after which they occupied campus, students were arrested at the university of minnesota — twin cities, after which faculty walked out; and yes, there are protests at the other ivies, most notably yale, with students facing mass arests after encampments, but there is also an encampment at brown, protests appeared at cornell, princeton faculty issued a statement of solidarity while students are preparing an encampment, and harvard banned the undergraduate palestine solidarity committee. there are thousands of students who are protesting for palestine across the entire country, facing harassment, arrest, and suspension in return

An Update

Also increasingly aware that a LOT of people "manage" getting through the 40+ hour work week by sleeping less than is healthy and relying on stimulants like coffee and energy drinks to keep them going.

For people who are unwilling or unable to do this...work really does just dominate your life. Like we really should not have to rely on unhealthy practices just to have a social life or keep on top of housework or whatever.

I know I post about this a lot but I'm so TIRED all the time and it's just so depressing that this is how we're expected to spend the one life we have.

Hey sorry but I think you’re missing the point of people just saying “I can’t afford this and that sucks” full stop. That’s not hating on them, it’s just feeling disappointed. Of course art shouldn’t be for free, and personally I don’t blame them for wanting to move and grow. But it’s a bummer if you can’t afford it. But people are not just saying they can't afford it and that sucks.

They are leveling accusations at Steven, at Ryan, at the company as a whole, that are just patently not true and frankly, in the case of the vitriol directed at Steven and Ryan, actively fucking racist.

People are accusing Watcher of selling out, accusing them of being greedy and selfish and alienating their audience on purpose as if that is a choice a business that wants to keep running makes on purpose.

People are upset and I get it. But people have also gotta realise that "damn i can't afford this now that sucks" =/= "the entire company should be burned to the ground".

The reactions today have been wildly outsized to the actual issue at hand and to be honest, I think a lot of people who are big mad don't actually like Watcher all that much, based on the things they're saying.

i've been on the watcher subreddit all day but i had to leave it tonight, lmao. people are understandably upset but they are also taking it out on other people who are not as upset and also making wildly unfounded claims about steven/ryan/shane (mostly steven). it's getting ugly, and everyone who hated steven all along is coming out of the woodwork.

anyway, i'm really hopeful they're successful with this new venture but i think it's gonna be reallyyy hard to maintain whatever audience they get and also grow. idk, not an expert in any of this. i will probably chuck some money to check it out just like i occasionally do with disney+ and max, but who's paying $6/mo for something that's been free on youtube for 4 years
