every gay friend group has: the repressed academic, the ska loving "brawn", the formerly mean girl psychic, the match making anime fan, the astrology lover, the lesbian butcher/reluctant big sister, the sexy cat with nine lives, the walrus who runs a magic shop and the local witch who wants to kill everyone

Two new open-access books on inclusion and decolonization in linguistics!
Inclusion in Linguistics, Anne H. Charity Hudley, Christine Mallinson, Mary Bucholtz (Eds.) (2024), Oxford University Press
Full-text PDF Companion website
Decolonizing Linguistics, Anne H. Charity Hudley, Christine Mallinson, Mary Bucholtz (Eds.) (2024), Oxford University Press
Full-text PDF Companion website
Per Anne H. Charity Hudley, "we strongly encourage readers to engage with [the books] as a pair. The volumes and the models of decolonized and inclusive research, teaching, advocacy, and action that they present are informed by each other." (Source)
They also ask: "In support of publication justice, please share the links rather than the PDF files so that our authors get the download documentation and credit for their work that they deserve." (Source)
Go forth and be educated!

ppl like to call “the headband” the “footloose episode” and act as if it’s generally dumb filler but it’s actually brilliant and showcases exactly why aang is the protagonist of atla. he does something incredibly impractical and inadvisable (throws a secret dance party in a cave in which he is hiding out with his fellow highly wanted fugitive friends) for the benefit of the children of the enemy nation who exterminated his people, because he can recognize that they are being directly harmed by the imperialist propaganda they have been fed since birth. and at the end of the episode, they all sacrifice themselves for aang’s benefit, showing him that selfless compassion in return. no other episode as pointedly demonstrates how fire nation propaganda operates (though obviously zuko and azula’s characters are perfect testaments to this throughout the show), and also shows us how aang’s cultural values help his fire nation schoolmates’ unlearn their own. in a subtle parallel, aang asks zuko to dance with him in “the firebending masters,” which results in zuko learning the true meaning of fire: instead of the harsh, oppressive, violent force he had always been taught to regard it as, he now sees fire as life, warmth, and healing. aang helping those kids find their individuality and self-expression is a small ripple effect in unlearning propaganda that would ultimately topple the fascist propaganda on which the fire nation relies to maintain its empire. as toph succinctly puts it at the end of the episode, aang taught those kids to be free.

this just. isn’t true lol. from the publicly available data that i can find… no.
they seem to have this idea that 1. the best outcome here is actually to avoid transition, and 2. anything that might lead to transition(a concern that has no scientific basis) is inherently harmful. even if that thing is shown to help.
besides, you can’t start hormones at 11, but you can start “natural” puberty. puberty blockers DO give you that time and stop the irreversible changes puberty brings.
and as for the data…
one study of almost 10,000 trans children found that transitioning younger was correlated with better mental health outcomes, so long as that child wasn’t bullied. almost ten thousand children.
this study found that with support and access to social transition, “transgender children who are supported in their gender identity have developmentally normative levels of depression and only minimal elevations in anxiety, suggesting that psychopathology is not inevitable within this group”. aka, you can avoid the mental health struggles correlated with being transgender if you fucking support your kids.
treating transgender children and adolescence, an interdisciplinary discussion” is an excellent review of transgender and the first chapter goes through the correct steps to take as for treating children and the results. if you want to understand transgender children, great book. here’s a quote-
“In contrast to what happens in children, gender dysphoria rarely changes or desists in adolescence who have been gender dysphoric since childhood and remain so after puberty(Seensma, Biemond, de Boer, & Cohen-Ketenis, 2011)”
