My HC for Dwarf Beards and Gender Presentation
So the first thing you need to know is the average dwarf will have a primary braid and a secondary pair of braids to either side of it. These two sets of braids denote different things so
Primary Braid
The Primary Braid is the large braid down the center of the beard. Traditionally there are three recognized genders in Dwarven Society, though they do acknowledge an individual’s desire to express themselves in new ways. A traditional 3-strand braid denotes male preferred pronouns, a 4-strand braid denotes female preferred pronouns, and a 2-strand twist denotes a non-binary dwarf with gender-neutral pronouns. These are entirely based on gender expression and not related to sex or genitalia of the dwarf, which is considered a private matter that matters to no one but the dwarf and their mate.
It is possible for a dwarf not to have a primary braid, but this style is considered a time of transition or change in a dwarf’s life, and gender-neutral pronouns should be used until otherwise stated. Some dwarves cut off their primary braid when moving away from their home so as to reevaluate and reinvent themselves in their new residence, but it is not something all dwarves do.
The majority of dwarves use he/him pronouns outside of all-dwarven societies due to gender stigma against female presenting dwarves by other species, but in an all-dwarven society the mix of genders will be fairly even.

more dance studio au details under the cut bc i woke up too early this morning and wrote bc i couldn’t fall asleep again, and have now organized those half-asleep thoughts
- they’re all on the teaching team at a big commercial dance studio, which has tons of drop in classes but also a competitive team!
- jack teaches hip hop — the boy can GROOVE, and he’s known for sharp, hard-hitting choreo and the funnest class you’ll ever take. this is the vibe. as a teenager, he was a proper b-boy, but after a wrist injury he had to give up breaking and shift his focus to commercial hip hop. he can still dance like crazy but doesn’t perform much anymore, so it’s a treat when you get to watch him demonstrate in class (or even better, when you show up to someone else’s class and he’s dancing along in the back row).
- davey teaches ballet. of course he does. he’s a little intimidating at first, because his classes are pretty intense and serious, but he’s actually a total sweetheart who just wants to help you improve and learn. he was in a professional company for a few years, but ultimately didn’t enjoy the atmosphere and realized he much prefers teaching. his classes range from baby ballet, to adult recreational, to coaching the studio’s top teen dancers for major competitions (like yagp, which he won when he was 12 and again when he was 18). everyone knows his classes are hard as fuck, but so worth it because you always gain something from them
- race is the head coach for the most advanced comp teams, and he’s a definite jack of all trades. his signature is very difficult and intense jazz groups (very molly long style choreography) but he knows how to play to every individual dancer’s strengths when working on solos— he’ll give them anything from contemporary to tap to acro and everything in between, because he has a very well-rounded skill set from when he was a (very successful) competitive dancer himself. he still actively dances, but coaching his team of elite little prodigies is his number one focus.
- spot is race’s boyfriend who doesn’t have any dance experience but has totally immersed himself in the community at the studio. he drops into open classes sometimes just to try it (usually when jack is teaching) but mostly is just a steady presence as he pops in to drop off coffee and whatnot for race every so often. the kids all think he’s incredibly cool, and he’s not exactly sure what to do with the fact that he has a little fan club made up primarily of 8-12 year old girls, but he honestly can’t complain.
- kath teaches theatrical jazz, heels, ballroom/latin, and all that kind of stuff! she looooves some good sexy choreo and especially loves when people who wouldn’t usually move like that step out of their comfort zones to try it— most of her classes are adult recreational drop-ins for that reason. she’s all about building confidence and just has the BEST vibes
- medda is the company director and crutchie is her admin assistant (he danced growing up but his MS started getting worse as he got older so he’s officially retired now, he sometimes substitute teaches different classes). these two make the whole operation run, and it’s no easy task! there’s a solid week at the end of every summer where it’s dangerous territory to even talk to crutchie, because he’s so stressed about building the class schedule for the upcoming season that he could snap at any moment. he can normally be found at the front desk with a smile on his face, though! medda is usually either in her office or in one of the studios, teaching technique classes to the competition teams or just observing while the other teachers work— she started coaching race when he was a toddler so she thinks it’s fun to watch him and see how he’s grown <3
- anyways!! that’s a nice little dump of all the thoughts on my mind at the moment,, i have some plot ideas ready so i may or may not end up writing something! we shall see, folks.

Doesn’t it though??????
Okay, here’s an idea:
Cheerleader! Davey AU: Sarah and Davey are co-captains of the cheerleading team. I think that either of them could’ve been captain alone, but they’re happier sharing the responsibility and it makes it a lot more manageable. Sarah’s really great thinking of the bigger picture: creating goals for the squad, identifying ways to grow the team/become stronger as a unit, and coming up with the overarching theme/storyline of a routine. Davey’s strength lies in the detail work - choreographing individual stunts/tumble routines, figuring out how to utilize each person’s skills the best, etc. I think Sarah’s got the mindset and heart for cheerleading, and Davey’s better at the actual athletics of it.
Davey’s a fantastic tumbler. He’s got such long legs that he can get serious height in his flips and tucks, and it genuinely seems like he’s flying. Just watching him you can tell that he could’ve gone into gymnastics competitively, but I think he prefers the team element of cheering.
Also, Spot’s also on the cheerleading team and he’s their main flyer, mostly because I want him to be. He’s easily the most competitive person on the team and regularly intimidates the opposing team’s players just by glaring from the sidelines. (He has a very aggressive Pom-Pom shake)
Jack’s the quarterback. I debated about if I wanted him to be on the football team at all for this one, but then I thought about putting Katherine on the team as well as a running back, and that sold the idea for me.
(The main friendships in this one would be Jack & Katherine and Davey & Spot)
Sidebar, kind of really feeling a Albert/Race/Spot background pairing. Al and Race would also be on the football team, and they’re constantly teaming up to flirt with Spot. Spot tries very hard to pretend that he’s not interested in them, and it almost works, except Albert manages to make him laugh, then blush, once after a really stupid joke, and then they’re both hooked.
Albert is a linebacker. Race is the kicker in honor of Ben Cook kicking himself in the face during livesies
But anyway, Jack has an extremely obvious crush on Davey, but in typical (for me) fashion, Davey does not notice. I’m not sure how close they’d be in this one, but I kinda love the idea of them having a relationship built on friendly waves in passing/quips before games/teasing & flirting with undertones of genuine appreciation and respect underneath.
Oh, I just had a thought! Jack and Davey decide to team up to finally get Katherine and Sarah together, and while they’re scheming about that, they also start to fall for each other. Because I’m do so love my basic tropes lol.
There’s going to have to be a least one instance where Davey ends up wearing Jack’s letterman, and I am absolutely not sorry
There’s also going to have to be a moment where, the football team and the cheer squad are warming up before practice, Jack jogs over to talk to Davey really quick while he’s doing his stretches, and Davey unknowing causes Jack’s brain to melt by doing something very flexible without breaking a sweat. Davey does Not notice that anything’s amiss.
I’m also going need there to be constant, ‘the head cheerleader always dates the captain of the football team’ jokes from literally everyone around them
The vibes for this are fluffy, goofy, idiots to lovers (x3), and Shenanigans. And lots of Ciarra pretending to know literally anything about sports, or carefully writing around it despite this being a football/cheer au lol

Jack was still apprehensive about his new life. He only slightly knew his "brother," Race, and hadn't really gotten used to his "mother's" extremely outgoing personality yet. The only thing he did know was that he felt the most comfortable in this home than he ever had in his life.
He also wasn't used to a family being as kind as this one had been. They had done everything to welcome to their loving home. They had done everything from just random hugs from time to time to starting a family game night to get familiar with each other.
Jack finally felt safe. He started at school a few days after and was immediately just adopted into Race's friend group. They all treated him as if he had been there for years, especially Charlie.
"Hey, do you wanna hang out with us later? We're going to see a movie!" Charlie exclaimed. Jack looked around to be sure that he was talking to him. "I mean, I guess, yeah."
"Yay! You'll probably have to go with all of us in one car, is that okay?"
"Uh, yep!"
Jack Kelly went home the happiest he had ever been that night. Not only had he met friends that treated him well, but he also had a family. It was a family that would treat him like he was an actual person. It was also the first time he called Medda "mom."
"Momma! They actually like me!" Jack yelled when he got home.
They both cried happy tears together, both happy to finally feel real familial love from one another.

A year later, Medda decided to adopt him. He thought that movie night would be the happiest he had ever been, but now he was beaming. He and Race were practically bouncing off the walls now that they would actually be brothers. They went to school the next day their friends were feeling the same excitement they felt.
Jack Kelly had family and friends, and that's all he needed.
