Having noticed Luca and Vivienne chatting in the kitchen, Ollie decided to give them some time alone. Wandering his way into the main common area, he saw Aiden engaged in a movie and decided to catch up with him. He hadn’t been around much the past few days. And Ollie had to admit he was curious what he had been up to.
“What’s going on, man?” Ollie said and he took a seat next to Aiden. “You’ve been MIA lately.”
“And?”
“What have you been up to?”
“Just living that college life,” Aiden replied with a grin. “People to see and all that.”
“I see. Who you been out with, though?”
“You want a list?”
Ollie rolled his eyes. It annoyed him when Aiden pretended to be ignorant. Especially with him, they had been friends since they were kids.
“You know what I mean, dude. I thought you and Liv were together. But you haven’t been out with her the past few days. She’s been here.”
“We’ve fucked around a bit, sure. But that’s all there is to it.”
Ollie raised his eyebrows at Aiden’s callous response, “Does she know that?”
“We both know what it is.”
“Oh, yeah? You sure about that? Cause I haven’t seen her out with anyone else.”
Scoffing, Aiden shook his head emphatically, “I haven’t made her any promises or hid the fact that I’ve been out with other girls.”
“All right, then. So, if say, someone else were to ask her out in a more than fuck buddy way, you’d be fine with it?”
“Of course. She’s free to do what she wants to. And I don’t give a shit if you ask her out, Ollie.”
“Who’s talking about me?”
“You were,” Aiden replied with a small chuckle. “Feel free to get in there if you want to, dude. I don’t care. At all.”
“If you say so.”
“I do.”
“Okay, bro. Just don’t come crying to me when you catch feelings, okay?”
“No feelings here. She’s all yours.”
Ollie nodded but didn’t say anything more. He didn’t entirely buy that Aiden was completely immune to Olivia. The girl had a certain charm about her. But if he wasn’t going to treat her the way she deserved then Ollie would be more than happy to step in. He had always loved her. And maybe now was the right time to tell her.

Once the meal was finished, Vivienne called for the rest of the household to come to dinner. After waiting a few minutes for them to show up, Vivienne and Luca decided to eat without them. They could heat up the leftover later when they wanted.
For the first few minutes, the two of them sat in neutral silence. Not exactly uncomfortable quiet, but not easy going either. Since she had come into the house Vivienne hadn’t had a lot of interaction with Luca. He was nice enough, but not really social. He spent a lot of time holed up in his room so she hadn’t really had a chance to talk to him much. So she decided to use the opportunity at hand to get to know him a little.
“Are you nervous about classes starting up tomorrow?” she asked, hoping it was a nice, safe topic to start with.
“Not really. It’s my second year so I know what to expect and where to go.”
“Oh, yeah, of course.”
“What about you?”
“I’m a little anxious. My program is very competitive and I’m not entirely sure where all my classes are.”
“There’s maps online if you get lost,” Luca replied distantly. He grew silent a moment as he speared some of his food onto his fork, then added, “Or one of us can show you around.”
Vivienne smiled. She could see that he was trying and she appreciated it. He was a little stand offish in general, but it seemed like he was a good guy.
“I’m sure the maps can get me there. But if you see me wandering around campus looking lost and out of place, please come save me.”
Now it was Luca’s turn to smile, “You’re not really the type to be out of place I don’t imagine. You seem like you can fit in anywhere you happen to be. And on the off chance that you are, I’m sure any guy on campus would be more than happy to help you out.”
“Including you?”
“Sure,” Luca replied. Flashing her a modest, yet candid smirk. “If you want.”
“I do want.”
“Then all you have to do is ask.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”

Thoroughly distressed over her phone call, Vivienne was eager to put it out of her mind. She paced her room a few minutes trying to distract herself, before noticing the time. It was almost six p.m. and time to start getting dinner ready. They all took turns in the kitchen so everything was fair. And tonight was her and Luca’s night to cook. The perfect distraction.
She took a slow, deep breath before stepping out into the hall and knocking on Luca’s door to call him into the kitchen. To her surprise, he opened up right away. Then proceeded to follow her wordlessly down the hall and into the kitchen where they began to prep the meal for the evening.

Across the hall, Vivienne was getting in a little piano practice. She wanted to be polished and on her game for her first day of classes in the morning. It had been tough to get into the program to begin with. She had to prove that she belonged there.
Just as she was focusing on a particularly tough part of the song she was working on, Vivienne’s phone rang. She didn’t recognize the number and thought about not answering it. But it could be the school or a recent friend she had met on campus calling so she answered it. And then immediately regretted her decision.
“You’ve been avoiding my calls,” a strong male voice said on the other end of the line.
“How did you get this number? I told you to stop calling me!”
“When you fulfil your obligation I will stop calling,” the voice answered coldly. “You remember what we discussed, don’t you?”
“I already said I won’t do it,” she whispered. “I don’t owe you anything else!”
“You owe me your life, Vivienne. And your debt will be repaid or you know what comes after.”
Vivienne shivered at the thought of “after”. She did know what would happen. And she had been a fool to think that her contract would cease because she had fled the city. She knew better. There was no escape from her debt outside of either fulfilling what had been asked of her, or by her own death. And she had to make a choice. She couldn’t keep running.
“Okay…I’ll do what you ask,” she said weakly. “Just….give me some time.”
“You have ten days. Either give us proof your job has been completed or the Firebrand will handle you both. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Ten days, Ms. Ortero. Not a moment longer.”

Luca slipped into his bedroom and locked the door behind him. Sitting down at his computer, he typed in a few commands that opened up some data screens. To many people, the information displayed before him was nothing more than gibberish. But to him, it was a complex language in which he based his entire work. His entire life if he was being honest.
Hacker. Oh, how he hated that word. And everything associated with it. He had walked away from the game a year ago. Yet he was still tethered to it. At least until his debt was paid. Once he was free from his old life, he would be just another programmer.
But for now he had to do what he must. His own life and the lives of those around him depended on it. Until he made amends for what he had done, his particular talents were at the full disposal of those in power. And today, that meant stealing a little cash. While he didn’t feel exactly good about it, he had certainly done worse for less. And someday, he would be able to put it all behind him. He just had to bide his time.

After running errands all morning, Luca finally returned home. As he walked in the door he heard the distinct sounds of giggling coming from the main common area. He had planned to get a little work done the moment he got back, but was instead, over come with curiosity.
As he got to the end of the hall he saw what the commotion was all about. Olivia and Vivienne were laughing together in front of the television. When he saw the hunks plastered all over the screen he had to smile to himself as he rounded the corner of the couch to join them.
“Having fun, ladies?”
“Hey! No boys allowed!” Vivienne joked as he passed in front of them.
Luca let out a smile laugh as he gestured to the scene currently playing on the screen, “Doesn’t look like it to me.”
“Unless you’re going to take your shirt off too, get lost!” Olivia replied with a smirk.
“I’d consider it if I thought you two could handle all of this.”
The two girls both groaned facetiously at his joke. Sure it was in bad humor and terrible taste, but they all shared a smile even so. It wasn’t like him to banter so openly but he was actually in a good mood.
He opened his mouth to continue the exchange, but then his phone began to vibrate in his pocket. Completely souring his mood on the spot. It was Sunday afternoon, and if he phone was going off it could only mean one thing. He had business to handle. Fuuuuuck.
Rising to his feet, Luca shoved his phone back in his pocket, “I have go, girls,” he said as he walked toward his room, “Have fun with your show.”
