Why Are We Here Again?
So, I’ve started writing a new story (titled above)! My plan was to write the entire thing before releasing one chapter at a time, but I thought, well, it’s just sitting here, I might as well upload one chapter and let it sit on archive instead whilst I write the rest of it. Expect the first chapter to be uploaded soon enough, and then nothing else until I finish it! As soon as I do so, I’ll be slowly letting out the rest, giving me time to go back and change stuff if I so wish.

Canary by cloud_nine_and_three_quarters (a fanfic review)
Moment of truth: I actually actually actually scrolled through this story countless of times in my ao3 feeds (can we call it that?) before I actually decided to give it a shot because I saw a tumblr post about it (I don't really remember what the post was about) and now I can't put it down. I mean I've tried but I kept going on bathroom breaks at work just so I can sneak a read... So the reason why I kept putting it off was because I was sort of thinking that maybe Canary was like the typical cliched story that follows the typical cliched timeline and flow and you get me. I'm also just bad with music haha. But dang, first chapter in and I'm already in love.
After reading Bough Breaks (it's still ongoing, mind you so I still look forward to that), I have developed a certain love for Present Mic due to his protective and open-love nature and Canary provided that Present Mic in this story and it's the version I never knew I needed but definitely wanted. And I love how effortlessly it falls to Mic's character that I actually end up wondering if it's canon.
Here is the story summary:
Midoriya Izuku is Quirkless. Well, he thought was. That was until he opened his mouth to sing.
There is more power in Midoriya's singing than he could have ever dreamed of - a power truly worthy of a hero. But will he ever have the confidence to spread his wings and soar?
Follow Canary on his journey to find his voice and become the hero he was always meant to be.
And my own version of the summary, as a fangirl, would be something like this:
After years of being bullied, abused, ignored, and tormented by people who were supposed to help him grow and have a healthy childhood (not Inko tho, she's always an angel), Izuku has learned to shut the world out by shutting himself up. Selective Mutism. Quirkless and mute are the top two things to describe him - but he is more than that. Always, always, more than that. A musician by heart, a genius by mind, and a sweet and loving boy by nature, Izuku makes it into UA without any need for a quirk and without any dreams of getting into the hero course - that is, until he meets the right people.
Anyway, I really really love how the first chapter starts. It's cute and simple and yet so heartwarming. And I love how the story just progresses and how the characters got to know each other and learned to love each other and I just ajsbsbakakbflabd I can't even remember how many times I said "awwww babies!!!!" with a stupid grin on my face. In front of people. Like I said, I can't put it down.
But as always (or at least, as always as I can manage), I'm going to explain what I like about this story minus the fangirling bit.
One, I love the fact that this story presents Present Mic as Izuku's mentor. I honestly don't like him (but I don't dislike him, there's a difference) since I really hate loud people but fics like these make me admire him given how they portray him with a little bit of canon in it. Present Mic has three jobs. How he manages to be a teacher, a pro-hero, and a DJ (?) is beyond me, especially when they do mental health rescues on the side, too. And that's another thing that I like. Present Mic is a mental health advocate. That alone is enough for me to call him an angel. AND HE GAVE IZUKU LEGIT ADVICE ON NERVOUSNESS. You gotta read, little listener, if you wanna know.
Two, Shinsou. He's an angel, too, albeit a slight insomniac with good insults and dark humor at that. And I just really love him, how protective yet supportive he is of Izuku. How he cares for him and loves him and his want of him to grow. I can't say much without spoiling so I encourage to just really read. I also meant love as in platonic.
Three, Bakugou gets put in his place. I love how Cloud (can I call the author that?) wrote the Sports Festival. It was lovely. AND THE LAST SONG IZUKU SINGS AHHHHH GOOSEBUMPS
Four, KODA KOUJI GETS A SPOTLIGHT. THIS IS ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR ME I LOVE IT.
Now discontinuing the counting, I also just definitely adore how Cloud wrote Izuku's character - from the secrets to the past to the fears to the mental barriers - it creates a clear picture of who Izuku is. Of who he was. Of what constricts him and stops him and frees him. Which makes it all the more heartwarming when you see him grow.
I love how he used to dream of becoming a hero and how it conflicts with his present, especially after his conversation with All Might. I love how his past often get intermingled with his present that you see his struggle and feel it in your bones. I love how Izuku feels real.
I also love the fact that when Shinsou finds out Izuku has a quirk, he's happy. He wasn't envious or jealous or worried. He was happy. And that makes me happy.
As alwaaaaays, I have a few concerns (I mean when have I not, right?) regarding the story but all in all, I love it. I love it. I love it. It is now easily in my top bnha fics.

This is my doodle of Midoriya’s and Shinso’s hero costumes in my story Canary! Of course, Midoriya’s is strictly made up - but I’m kind of hoping Shinso’s is at least along the lines of what his real costume might end up like? Who knows XD
And no, I did not copy the Siren from one of my last drawings because I couldn’t be bothered to draw it twice - what are you talking about?
