Considering we’re in hell week, finals week, and the holiday season, it’s crunch time for a lot of people for a lot of different reasons. In just the last couple days we slowed down considerably, but just before that we were at a steady pace with new posts on the dash every time I went to look. I only expect to see activity pick back up once finals draw to a close, and with the event for everyone to participate in!

Holiday season is a time to be with your loved ones, exchanging gifts and reminding each other that you will be there for them through thick and thin. Seoul is, as usual, decorated with beautiful lights all around - with special note to the Han River bridge - and most bakeries and restaurants have already started selling their famous Christmas cakes. It’s a joyful time for all!

However, there are those in financial difficulties that cannot enjoy the holidays as much. In South Korea, it is estimated that about half of its residents over the age of 65 are currently living in relative poverty, and the absolute poverty ratio has also been increasing steadily since the 90s. As a result, many public daycares and retirement homes have become understaffed and overcrowded, and Christmastime can be tough for those who have lost it all (or never had it to begin with).

With those people in mind, Sinchon-dong’s local administration has decided to launch a contest to help bring light to those who can’t see it anymore! Running for two weeks starting on Sunday, December 7, local residents will be teaming up together to come up with their own DIY Christmas decorations, to be donated to retirement homes and daycares nearby. The rules specify that most of the materials used must be recyclable, and the total value spent cannot surpass ₩100,000 (about $90)! This is to remind everyone that Christmas can be done even on a tight budget, and also so the most fortunate can become aware of the tight conditions others may be living in. Another thing to be noted is that each team will be sponsored by a local business! Owners and managers of each shop will be available after business hours to discuss strategies and to help collect materials.

The winning team of this contest will have their story published on every major newspaper that’s currently circulating in Seoul, and they will receive special awards from the mayor himself! It’s an opportunity you surely cannot miss!
