We visited during the holiday season, and the home was decked out in appropriate decorations for the post-war period.

So, I built a camera. I ordered the 0.5mm pinhole on EBay as well as the film back, but everything else was from scratch. I didn't have a proper router table and hobbled one together from scrap wood. Some of my cuts weren't perfect, although it seemed to get the job done.

The photo of the ghost pumpkin is a direct positive print on 4x5 Harman photo paper exposed for about 85 minutes.

Earlier this year, I unveiled my “Abandoned Americana” series, and No. 7 earned a spot in the “Voices of the Midwest” exhibit (https://fineline.org/collections/kavanagh-gallery) at the Fine Line Creative Arts Gallery in St. Charles, Ill. The exhibit runs now through Oct. 11. I also filmed a brief artist’s statement that will be included in their virtual kickoff show.

The final piece measures 20″x20″ with a 24″x24″ gallery mat. I had it up on our living room wall for a day or two as I worked on the promotional content. The fine art print is protected behind UV protective, glare-resistant plexiglass with a conservation mat, archival backing board, acid-free foamboard, and acid-free backing paper. This limited-edition, signed print is numbered with a matching Certificate of Authenticity and numerical holographic seal. Only one copy in this format will be made in 2020-2021 and is one of 10 lifetime copies.

I went on a socially distanced photo hunt today in NW Illinois, starting around Sterling/Rock Falls and finished near Galena. Texaco Station⁠ During its heyday, Route 66 would at times be clogged with bumper-to-bumper traffic. It’s easy to understand why so many service stations line the road.
