PSA: the guardian is not working on a hit piece on diy hrt, and claims they are are misinformation
on the 18th, this post appeared on 4chan's /lgbt/ (slurs in thread: link). a screenshot was posted to reddit, then to tumblr. you've probably seen it:
Tumblr media
today, the 23rd, another screenshot popped up on various discord servers, then was reposted variously to twitter. it shows a supposed email from guardian journalist and notorious TERF Susanna Rustin, claiming as the original 4chan post does.
Tumblr media
it's now been shared around, and it's with good intentions. the message is useful: don't share your personal information or medical data with journalists, especially ones that happen to be TERFs.
but the post does this through misinformation and fearmongering. i'm still waiting on my response by email from Rustin, but she's reiterated twice (once, twice) that she did not write the email and is not working on such a story. on the 19th, i talked to other guardian newsroom journalists, who said they also did not know of a story's existence.
the moral of the story: this is misinformation, and it's dangerous. it spreads a fine message here, but it does it through spreading anxiety and terror.
you can follow along with this post on my parallel thread on twitter. also calling on @wakewithgiggli to delete their original post!

Yep. Fandom typically adores the pathetic guy who's trying to be tough but has no idea what he's doing and has a soft heart - "oh he's an idiot I love him etc." - but everyone is very quiet about Maximus.
And this is the pattern that I see in so many fandoms: it's not that people who would have shipped two protagonists if they'd both been white switch to protagonist/(villain/antagonist/antihero who hurt them), it's that the protagonist/protagonist shippers simply don't show up.
Like ... there will always be people into the edgier ship. For some it's the norm across all of their fandoms. They want to see the hate turn into lust/love, they want to see the grumpy one get soft or the soft one get grumpy, or they want to see something really dark. That's just their taste.
But in most fandoms, this balanced out by a healthy and active protagonist/protagonist faction. While some fans actively prefer non-canon ships and celebrate this fact, the ships that seem more obviously to-be-canon or at least to be based on strong friendship typically do have big fandoms, if not the biggest fandoms. What's really notable is that when the ship that has the explicit UST/chemistry/signposting contains one character of color, this faction often just ... doesn't develop. The people who would ship them focus on a generally positive side character, or they don't ship anyone, or they don't even get invested enough to care about the show at all.
Can we talk about the fact that so many people on this app would rather ship Lucy with the guy who CUT HER FINGER OFF or HER COUSIN 🤮 rather than shipping her with her canonical black love intrest. Yikes, this happens so often and it’s so concerning.

Nice whumpy thing: when people are intensely pragmatic about their injuries illnesses.
“Listen, if I pass out…”
“If you let up pressure, I’ll bleed out. So just, don’t move.”
“I know it ill hurt, just do what you need to.”

"low support needs disabled people are often not believed to have a disability at all and therefore struggle to get accommodations."
"high support needs disabled people's accommodations are often seen as 'too much' and therefore are not met."
"neurodivergent people's needs are often dismissed because nothing is physically wrong with them."
"physically disabled people people often cannot physically access buildings and people refuse to do anything about it."
"invisibly disabled people are seen as lazy by society."
"visibly disabled people are ostracized from society."
IT'S ALMOST LIKE THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE DISABILITY

Hello, this post- 'Izzy, after attempting to purchase Ed from a colonial power: You really want to lick the king's boots?
Stede, whose life literally depends on Ed signing the Act of Grace: You really don't have to do this.
Izzy tries everything he can to literally possess Ed. Stede would rather give up his own life than for Ed to be coerced.' Did think it was weird that Izzy would say something like that when he practically just became something like a privateer, helping the English literally hunt down a pirate ship and all, but yeah being that determined to keep Ed somehow and get Stede killed totally jibes. Stede reassuring Ed that he does indeed have a choice in the matter ❤️ For Ed's part I honestly kinda sorta maybe see this scene as his 'I'd rather be his whore than your wife' moment, if ya know what I mean? Him signing that document was like pretty much spitting straight into Izzy's face and for good reason 👍
I noticed that Ed never actually talks to Izzy until after he's returned to the ship when Stede has left him. The most he does is hit him. Izzy talks at him quite a bit, but I think at the point where Stede is about to be executed, Ed isn't hearing a word.
But Ed does know that Stede has treated him differently, that Stede has never acted like he had any claim on Ed or had wanted to possess him. And we see how often other men try to define Ed, down to what he's allowed to be called. (Hell, even when he's begging Ed to come back to life in "The Innkeeper," it's all framed as reassurance about his faithfulness. He never says that Ed can't leave him; he says "I'll never leave again.")
Izzy has absolutely agreed to serve the English, and for Ed to serve under him as a subordinate. He's not only trying to buy Ed; he's trying to subjugate him.

On related note, a few years ago, the Entomological Society of America officially discontinued the use of "gypsy moth" and "gyspy ant" as common names for Lymantria dispar and Aphaenogaster araneoides. L. Dispar is now known as the "spongy moth," so named for the appearance of their eggs, but I don't think a new common name has caught on for the ant species yet.
These changes we brought about, in large part, by the advocacy of Romani people in academia. You might not think that bug names are a very serious issue, but I believe that language matters. These species became known as "gypsies" because their attributes were likened to certain stereotypes and negative perceptions of actual Roma, so the continued use of those names reaffirmed those negative associations in the public consciousness. Slurs and pejoratives can never be truly decontexualized.
In my mind, one of the biggest obstacles that Romani people face when we are trying to advocate for ourselves is a lack of recognition as a marginalized group that deserves the necessary consideration. Even for seemingly trivial matters, like bugs or comic book characters, the way that people talk about us-- and talk down to us, when we get involved-- is telling. So, I always think that changes like this are a win, because it means that people are willing to learn and grant us the dignity we deserve. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to effect change in your own field, even arts and science.
