I love how despite Lin and Suyin fighting, Lin is still the protective older sister. She was the one who secured them in the arm since her arms are the only ones free.

Pov: Arthur always liked to make fun of John. But sometimes he was offended...like a child, even though he is a small child.

If I had a nickel for everytime the Avatar fandom had an unreasonable amount if hatered for a traumatised younger sister charater, demonised her and interpreted her actions in the least charitable way possible in order to make her scarred older sibling look better, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that happened twice.

Zuko and Lin fit the mould of "traumatised but secretly a softie that can be fixed" that usually gains characters a lot of s6mpathyy for their less then stellar actions. Also a lot of (frankly exhausting) woobification.
Azula and Suyin express their trauma through less desirable/palatable behaviours, which is why they're so often overly demonised by the fandom.

I think the reason I'm so protective of Su is that most Suyin haters I've met woobified Lin and Kuvira, completely deforming them as characters. While also defending or even agreeing with Kuvira's literal war crimes.
Also the very shitty aspect of piting two traumatised women against each other. Like Lin and Su are both victims of a less than ideal home life. They've both suffered and a huge part of their trauma is them having to compete for the good graces of their mother. And now we do something so similair. Arguing ove which of these women has the moral high ground in a very blurry situation.
Along with the veey concerning trend of discarding Suyin's mental anguish due to the fact that she 'seems more stable'. We give Lin a free pass for her shitty behaviours because we see that she's traumatised. But Suyin doesn't get this because she doesn't appear as messed up.
And I love Lin and I think she deserves to be treated more gently by the fandom because of her past. But so does Su. Someone who literally built her coping mecahnism from the ground up and then spent like two seasons watching said coping mechanism fall apart bit by bit.
Tumblr media
I'm not saying you can't criticise Su's behaviours in the show but like. So many people just handily discard the very obvious reasons for them and just call her a shitty person.

"But in that instant, Rangi looked upward and locked eyes with Kyoshi. The blow struck her squarely in the face. She let it happen."
Another TROK moment I had to draw! 💃

Nothing boils my blood more than seeing people talk about Avatar Kyoshi like a cruel sadist who’d just go around murdering whoever disagreed with her. That isn’t what she was like!!! She just did what was necessary to prevent power hungry, greedy, horrible men from taking over the world. She didn’t have patience for men like chin as her entire life had been destroyed by men like this, her loved ones killed by men like this in the name of power. Kyoshi was a kind hearted individual who cared deeply for justice and thus, wasn’t scared to dish it when she knew it was for the best. She wasn’t perfect, and sometimes her punishment was worse than the crime, but what she did is exactly what prevented shit like the 100 year war that came right after her death. Please, read the books, they’re so good.
