Scottish Folklore Creatures
I've been working on a little series of blog posts that bring together what I know about folklore creatures in Scottish traditional lore; rather than sharing them individually I thought I'd keep them all together and add to this post as I go.
Disclaimer: these blogs are largely what I've heard about these creatures from older family members and what I've learned from folktales in books (both children's collections and less sugar coated adult books) - folklore is notoriously complex. While I did secondary research, these posts represent my understanding as someone who grew up in the central belt of Scotland, so you may have heard different versions of the same stories, or read different stories entirely.

For the waking after a nightmare one I'd like to add my personal experiences:
Lie paralysed with cold fear
Struggle to stay awake and dip in and out of nightmares
As a result of the one above - experience fragments of the nightmare between sleep and wakefulness
Get up and walk around
Make tea
Turn on all the lights
Lie with their eye closed, too scared to open them
Pull the covers over their face
Start a foolproof plan for not dying in the nightmare when you inevitably fall back asleep then forget it and start the cycle again
things people do after having a nightmare that isn’t crying
struggle to catch their breath
grab onto whatever’s close enough to ground themselves in reality
become nauseous / vomit
shake uncontrollably
sweat buckets
get a headache
things people do to combat having nightmares if they occur commonly
sleep near other people so they can hear the idle sounds of them completing tasks
move to a different sleeping spot than where they had the nightmare
leave tvs / radios / phones on with noise
just not sleep (if you want to go the insomnia route)
sleep during the day in bright rooms
things people with insomnia do
first, obviously, their ability to remember things and their coordination will go out the window
its likely they’ll become irritable or overly emotional
their body will start to ache, shake, and weaken
hallucinate if it’s been long enough
it becomes incredibly easy for them to get sick (and they probably will)
