This spring, I was one of eight panelists in the American Bookseller Association’s Children’s Indies Introduce panel for Summer and Fall of 2021.
The panel’s goal is to read and discuss early galleys and manuscripts of forthcoming middle grade and young adult books that publishers submit to be part of debut author promotions, and choose ten titles for the final list, and to present at ABA’s Children’s Institute. From January to April, we read and had biweekly zoom calls to share our thoughts.

Find my recommendation for A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes & more in the American Bookseller Association’s February issue of IndieNext!
A Thousand Ships: A Novel by Natalie Haynes Harper, 9780063065390, $27.99 “From The Aeneid to The Iliad and The Odyssey, classic stories of the Trojan War are implicitly reliant on the role of women, however reticent they are portrayed. Finally — finally! — we have a retelling that does women, girls, and goddesses justice. Through the perspective of women in various places and times during the war, Natalie Haynes constructs an epic collage that follows the warriors, refugees, oracles, muses, wives, and daughters of Troy, Greece, and beyond in one of the most famous conflicts in world history.” —Cat Chapman, The Oxford Exchange, Tampa, FL

Find my recommendation for Jackie Polzin’s Brood & more in the American Bookseller Association’s March issue of IndieNext!
Brood: A Novel by Jackie Polzin Doubleday, 9780385546751, $24 “Over the course of a year, told in a collection of snapshots, Brood shows the life of a woman grieving by doing anything but. She gives herself purpose by taking care of a small flock of chickens, as well as finding small but kind, funny, or wry ways of interacting with her neighbors, eccentric mother-in-law, and caring husband, Percy. There are plenty of clever and funny moments from scene to scene (not to mention the odd and interesting analyses of a chicken’s life and point of view), but the beauty in this book lies in the narrator’s acceptance of the everyday, and of all the things — bad, good, but mostly in-between — that come therein.” —Cat Chapman, The Oxford Exchange, Tampa, FL

@siba_books: Thank you to Cat Chapman of @oebookstore for the review of @paraicodonnell's THE HOUSE ON VESPER SANDS (@tin_house) - a Winter 2021 #ReadThisNext title! Find more reviews from Southern independent booksellers at The #SouthernBooksellerReview (link in bio)!

Image of book cover on left hand side of graphic, with the text: "A sooty and shadow-filled Victorian London acts as a sentient backdrop to the sinister, dark, clever (and somehow even hilarious at times), detective mystery that is THE HOUSE ON VESPER SANDS. As a reader, there were just so many sensory details and perfect moments of tension that made the world feel all the more real, and the discovery all the more haunting." - Cat Chapman, Oxford Exchange, Tampa, FL - on the right. Find my recommendation for Valerie Perrin’s Fresh Water for Flowers & more in the American Bookseller Association’s July issue of IndieNext!
Fresh Water for Flowers: A Novel by Valérie Perrin, Translated by Hildegarde Serle  Europa Editions, 9781609455958, $25 “Valérie Perrin’s Fresh Water for Flowers is gorgeous. Reading it was almost like being baptized by Violette’s presence as a cemetery keeper, in its comfort, stability, and floral surroundings. Perrin takes us into the pool of Violette’s melancholic past, from first loves to devastating losses. It truly gripped each and every one of my emotions, from fear and sorrow to elation and sentimentality. Whatever I can write as a review, this book is still so much more. I’m so thankful to have read it and can’t wait to share it with readers.” —Cat Chapman, The Oxford Exchange, Tampa, FL
