when you realize cas never got a chance to see dean mourn him. to see what his death did to dean. how it broke him completely. SHATTERED. he never saw dean's utter despair. anger. complete hopelessness. he only ever saw dean's joy when he came back. and so cas figured that his death simply didn't affect dean all that much. that dean could be happy with Cas gone. that Dean could go on. Move on. cas never understood that this joy, this hope, this smile on dean's face after he came back was ONLY BECAUSE HE CAME BACK. CAME BACK TO DEAN.

Cas was the REASON.

and it's really unfortunate that they confirmed this narrative at the end, showing how Sam was only able to "make his life" when Dean was dead. That was bullshit. As if all those lies they implanted in Dean's mind were true. 😔

I think it is very important and calculated that Meg, who has a vested interest in driving a wedge between the brothers, says this not just privately to Sam but says this TO Dean in 1.16 "Shadow".

It isn't just about trying to manipulate Sam's view of events (or add to how Sam himself, when he is feeling angry and powerless, sometimes rewrites the narrative to turn Dean into someone "making" him do things). Meg wants not just Sam, but DEAN to think he is dragging Sam around against his will, and what's more, planting that seed totally works... on Dean.

That line does not work on Sam at that moment—he isn't open to it, but it DOES work on Dean. It sticks to him in the episode. He can't stop thinking about how he really might be a leech or a burden Sam feels forced to bear out of guilt or that Sam doesn't know how to say no and go his own way when he wants (even though Sam literally did exactly that in "Scarecrow" and Dean let him and even ultimately endorsed and commended him for defying John, and Sam came back on his own and chose to stay when Dean offered to drop him off somewhere) . It's also hard for Dean to let go of and accept Sam's word I imagine because this is essentially a repeat of Sam's narrative from "Asylum" and they didn't ever talk about what portions of what Sam said might be how he really thinks and feels.

So Dean addresses it as they leave the bar—he's stuck on what Meg said while Sam is just thinking about Meg being at the bar being suspicious as fuck:

This... doesn't really placate Dean. He doesn't bother Sam anymore by asking, but he also doesn't believe Sam is telling him the truth, and there IS a wound here for Dean, so it's easy for him to slide into this negative space where he accepts that he is a burden to Sam.

Later near the end of the episode, Dean says,

"Why do you think I drag you everywhere? Huh? I mean, why do you think I came and got you at Stanford in the first place?"

Dean has accepted Meg's dishonest narrative of events. Sam wanting revenge for Jess goes out the window. Sam being the person who directs them toward cases in 1.06 "Skin", and in 1.09 "Home", and in 1.12 "Faith", and in 1.14 "Nightmare", and even in the very case they are working on right then in 1.16 "Shadow", which was Sam's find—it all flies out the window. Dean is dragging Sam around everywhere. Dean accepts that lie.

no but i genuinely dont understand how you can watch 15 seasons of supernatural and just absolutely hate dean......literally in his first five minutes ever on screen they introduce him a very specific way so he instantly falls into a stereotypical macho, womanizing, douche archtype and he tears it all down in less than 30 seconds, he lets the mask slip for a second and shows its all an act.....like how are you not instantly compelled forever????
