BURIED ABOVE GROUND receives a prestigious SAMHSA VOICE Award
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We are so very proud to be a recipient of SAMHSA’s VOICE Award for Documentary Film in 2016.
In its 11th year, the Voice Awards program recognizes leaders in the TV and film industry and behavioral health community who work to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders.

Tumblr media
Held at UCLA’s Royce Hall in front of an audience of over 800 people, the program featured opening video remarks by First Lady Michelle Obama, a welcome address by SAMHSA host Tom Hill, and MC duties by Dr. Mehmet Oz.
Tumblr media
This year, the event highlighted the theme “Strengthening Families through Hope and Help” and put a spotlight the invaluable role family members can and do have in all aspects of prevention, treatment, and recovery.
Tumblr media
In accepting our award from writer Roger Wolfson, director Ben Selkow spoke about the necessity for a fluid and dynamic definition of “family.” In our film, recovery for Luis, Ashley and Erundina comes from non-traditional definitions of family. A beloved service dog named “Tuesday” becomes the trusted mainstay for Iraq War veteran, former U.S. Army Captain Luis Carlos Montalván. For Erundina, a child abuse and domestic violence survivor, her sister plays a critical role in her recovery, but it is a new family she makes at a recovery center that help her find a path to sobriety. And for Ashley, a fifth generation New Orleanian and survivor of Hurricane Katrina, it is rejoining her New Orleans community of sisters and brothers while building a new home with her husband that help her find solace.
Tumblr media
The evening moved along swiftly and a really diverse range of advocates, writers, producers, filmmakers, actors and consumers were acknowledged. There was so much passion and humility in the room, along with an unsaid understanding between everyone -- whether coming from the point of view of someone with a lived experience, a family member, or a film/tv creator, a compassion and warmth radiated throughout Royce Hall.
Several films, including Paul Dalio’s Touched with Fire and Glenn Holsten’s Hollywood Beauty Salon played with us as part of the Mental Health America Film Festival in June 2016.
Other films and television productions were honored, such as the brilliant Love & Mercy about Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Being Charlie directed by Rob Reiner and written by his son Nick Reiner, The Dark Horse with Cliff Curtis, Blue Bloods, Empire, Madam Secretary, Mom, Nashville, and The Carmichael Show.
Actors/Advocates Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard were given a SAMHSA Special Recognition Award, as were the Jackson-Brown Family, and the Reiner Family.
The Staglin Family received a Lifetime Achievement Award for their commitment to mental health philanthropy and research.
Sheldon Hill, a youth mentor and community organizer in Detroit received The Consumer/Peer/Family Leadership Award and had inspiring and beautiful words to share with the rapt audience. Tiffany Hunsely, Ted Streuli, Julie Mangers and the incomparable Sally Zinman received this award, as well. Joshua Calarino received the Young Adult Leadership Award.

Mental Health America National Conference & NYC Premiere Roundup
MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA FILM FESTIVAL & CONFERENCE
At Mental Health America's Annual Conference and 1st Annual Film Festival, Captain Luis Carlos Montalván, an Iraq War veteran and author of Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him, & his service dog Tuesday joined filmmaker Ben Selkow for a screening of the film and a dialog with the audience in addition to both being invited to speak on MHA Conference breakout group panels. A rapt crowd engaged in a passionate, emotional and inspiring conversation afterwards that continued long into the night.

Luis & Tuesday are to be commended for their continued bravery in life and endeavoring on the intrepid expedition of making a documentary with us. Luis and assisted by Tuesday leads an inspirational life, rising from the ashes of PTSD, to work extremely hard to rebuild himself, inspire and pull up 100,000's of others from all walks of life, deconstruct the failures of bad (or absent) policy, and push forward a message of hope. Perhaps the most innovative thing Tuesday and he do is seek to engage children and their parents to raise awareness, compassion and a broader worldview for the next generation through their children's (and parents) books Tuesday Tucks Me In and Tuesday Takes Me There. You can follow their adventures, community and upcoming appearances on the Facebook page for Until Tuesday.
NEW YORK CITY PREMIERE OF BURIED ABOVE GROUND AT IFC CENTER
The New York City Premiere of Buried Above Ground at the IFC Center was powerful with a packed house of the filmmakers (including editors James Lester and Flavia de Souza, co-producer Joedan Okun, DP Artem Agafonov, trailer editors Yasu Inoue and Craig Newton), colleagues, mental health advocates and the service dog organization that brought Tuesday into Luis’ life, Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities (ECAD) led by executive director Lu Picard. Mental Health Association-NYC set up a table and made resources available to the audience for National PTSD Awareness Month.

SF IndieFest Wrap-Up
San Francisco and SF IndieFest welcomed the BURIED ABOVE GROUND team with open arms Sunday, February 21st.
Tumblr media
Director Ben Selkow, Producer Marc Smolowitz and SF IndieFest Director of Programming Jennifer Junkyard Morris in front of The Roxie.
The packed Roxie Theater was full with film colleagues, advocates and festival attendees. For director Ben Selkow, it was an extremely warm “home away from home” screening with film school, family, high school, college and even camp friends turning up for the film and inspiring panel discussion afterwards. The supportive crowd was stirred to laughter and tears.
Tumblr media
The passion carried forward with a dynamic panel moderated by Selkow. The panel included Johnnia Davis, Founder and Executive Director of the non-profit organization Serenity House which focuses on disadvantaged women’s health; Bailey Wendzel, Program Director of NAMI SF; and Michelle Campbell-Mateo, a restorative justice counselor in the Bay Area.
Tumblr media
Marc Smolowitz, Ben Selkow, Johnnia Davis, Bailey Wendzel and Michelle Campbell-Mateo
All of these women share a journey through lived experiences into advocacy where they have continued their fight for awareness, justice, and creation of safe spaces for shelter, resources and dialog. The power and courage of their testimonies and narratives of recovery, resilience and ascension were an inspiration to everyone. Ms. Wendzel discussed a variety of therapeutic modalities, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Ms. Davis talked about lack of financial resources to be able to help all those in need especially in communities of color. And Ms. Campbell-Mateo shared her experiences counseling individuals navigate the health care and legal systems.
The discussion continued well after the panel ended into the streets and onto the reception that producer Marc Smolowitz hosted at Buttermilk Southern Kitchen, where attendees enjoyed good southern style cooking and more dialog about the film.

Fall Wrap Up
BURIED ABOVE GROUND screened October 14th at The Carter Center in Atlanta. This special presentation was in honor of World Mental Health Day and Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The Carter Center has supported Ben’s work on the film through its Fellowship programs, and the staff there have been very involved in developing the national outreach and engagement strategies we’re crafting around the film. We’re so grateful for their support, and especially for First Lady Rosalynn Carter’s belief in the film and her commitment to battling global stigma around mental illness.

Tumblr media
Director Ben Selkow expresses, “This is a mental health film, a human rights film and a testimonial of courage that will be an inspiration and tool of awareness for the American public. The film’s aim is to give voice to those disempowered by PTSD in hopes that their stories will promote awareness, understanding, and compassion so that our nation can begin to undo the prevailing forces of silence - guilt, shame and stigma - that engulf the brave Americans struggling to overcome this debilitating disorder.”
APHA’s Global Public Health Film Festival aims to be a catalyst in the movement toward a healthier nation and globe by sparking the conversation about health in creative ways.
We are excited to continue to partner with mental health organizations for festival and community screenings.

Tumblr media
Erundina Lopez, Domestic Violence Survivor, featured In BURIED ABOVE GROUND
ABOUT THE FILM: In BURIED ABOVE GROUND we follow three Americans trying to recover from PTSD — Luis, an Iraq War veteran, along with his service dog Tuesday; Erundina, a survivor of domestic violence; and Ashley, an evacuee from Hurricane Katrina.
The personal battles fought by Luis, Erundina, and Ashley illuminate a global health condition that is misunderstood, underreported, and often left untreated. We hope to change this by taking public conversations about PTSD and the “crisis of connection” in important new directions. Screenings of “Buried Above Ground” will be treated as special events where patients, stakeholders, caregivers, advocates, and others can connect, talk, engage, and break the isolation that all too often comes with the experience of a mental health condition.
Director Ben Selkow states, “If we can talk about these mental health issues sooner and provide access to a dialogue for patients and their immediate community, we hope to raise awareness and compassion, empower audiences, fight stigma, help intervene before crisis points arise, and mitigate the high suicide numbers associated with PTSD.”
We hope you can join us this Saturday, October 24th 3pm at Carmel High School Theater 3600 Ocean Ave, Carmel. (http://carmelfilmfest.com/films/#tab-2-tab)
