I remember first learning that you can cry from any emotion, that emotions are chemical levels in your brain and your body is constantly trying to maintain equilibrium. so if one emotion sky rockets, that chemical becomes flagged and signals the tear duct to open as an exit to release that emotion packaged neatly within a tear. Everything made sense after learning that. That sudden stability of your emotions after crying. How crying is often accompanied by the inability to feel any other emotion in that precise moment. And it is especially beautiful knowing that it is even possible to experience so much beauty or love or happiness that your body literally can’t hold on to all of it. So what I’ve learned is that crying signifies that you are feeling as much as humanely possible and that is living to the fullest extent. So keep feeling and cry often and as much as needed

I have recently started learning mandarin by myself since my school doesn’t offer any classes, I was wondering if you have any tips for studying or websites that I could use?
Hi there, sorry I took so long to answer this because this answer took me a really long time to compile 😂 First of all, great to know you are learning Chinese! Actually Mandarin is just a spoken form of Chinese, but I assume you are planning to learn how to read and write Chinese as well :D I’ve received quite a few questions about learning Chinese ever since I started this blog, so I thought I should write a detailed answer about this.
LONG ANSWER AHEAD
Before you start, do note there are actually two sets of (overlapping) Chinese characters out there,
1. Traditional Chinese characters (used in Taiwan and Hong Kong)
2. Simplified Chinese characters (used in Mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia).
I’m from Singapore so I learned simplified Chinese, I can generally read traditional Chinese as well though I have great difficulty writing them because I’m too used to simplified characters 😂😂 You don’t have to learn both, but it’s good to know the difference since you will probably encounter both types of characters at some point when you are studying Chinese/ consuming Chinese entertainment.
I definitely recommend learning Hanyu pinyin to help with the pronunciation of the words, but do note that pinyin is neither the Chinese alphabet nor meant to be a substitute for Chinese characters. There is no alphabet for Chinese… we do have Chinese radicals (further explained here) which is not really an alphabet but more like components of a character 🤔 For the most part, to learn Chinese characters you have to memorise them. Maybe you can set yourself a goal of memorising a few characters a day to kickstart the process, actually if possible I would recommend getting a Chinese copy book/app like this one:
Tumblr media
Writing the characters over and over is the best way to remember the words imo, also this will help you practise your handwriting!
A good dictionary is a must, for Chinese-English dictionaries the best one I have tried so far is the app Pleco. I used to have this book of 成语 (Chinese idioms) and 俗语 (Chinese sayings) as well that I had to memorise for school, but I think you can just learn them online (found some here) if you want :D You should probably wait till your Chinese reaches intermediate~advanced level before starting on those though, if not the whole thing might be kind of confusing.
For websites, I have never tried learning Chinese online before so I don’t have first-hand experience of any of the online Chinese learning sites, but I did find this list of online resources for learning Chinese which is really comprehensive. it covers sites and apps for everything from reading and writing Chinese characters to all types of podcasts. Actually you know what, there are more resources available online than I thought, there are even apps for you to connect to native Chinese speakers (I didn’t even know those existed until I wrote this answer) 👀 That list of sites and apps pretty much covers every aspect of learning Chinese so I don’t have much else to add tbh 😂😂 Just gonna recommend some entertainment options that will hopefully make your learning process more enjoyable!
(Below are mostly my personal song/ show/ manhua recommendations)
For songs there are really way too many so it’s kind of hard to draw up a list, maybe you can start with the songs of some of the more famous artistes like Jay Chou, A-mei, Eason Chan, Faye Wong, Mayday, Stefani Sun, Jam Hsiao… You can search for Mandopop playlists on Spotify for a start! I’m personally quite fond of 逃跑计划, Lala Hsu and 陈粒’s songs.
Also randomly recommending 夜空中最亮的星 and 平凡之路 because they are my favourite songs (夜空中最亮的星 almost made me cry the first time I heard it, even now after listening to it for so many times it still gives me the same feeling 👵🏻).
For dramas my favourite drama by far is Nirvana in Fire (琅琊榜), which imo is the best drama I’ve ever watched. My sister and I were obsessed with this show and recommended it to all our friends, it was so good!!
Tumblr media
(side note I think Hu Ge’s face is especially suited for historical dramas)
Some other dramas I liked were Ode to Joy, The Fierce wife (Taiwanese) and The Legend of Zhen Huan, Nirvana in Fire Season 2 was also just released this year! My friend recommends Tens Miles of Peach Blossoms which she said made her cry a lot, and I think Yang Mi’s latest drama The Negotiator is quite popular too though I haven’t watched it yet. I actually don’t have a lot of dramas to recommend because I don’t really watch them 😂😂 But coming from someone who don’t particularly like watching dramas, Nirvana in Fire is really so freaking good…
Anyway besides songs and dramas, my other recommendations are 1) Web novels and 2) Manhua.
I highly recommend reading web novels (I mostly read on them on qidian), the Chinese web novel community is seriously gigantic and I’ve honestly only explored a very very very tiny fraction of their offerings because there are so many popular web novels out there. Btw even if you can’t read Chinese there are English sites (webnovel l wuxiaworld) where you can read the Chinese web novels translated into English for free, so you can enjoy them regardless of your Chinese abilities :D One well-known novel on both the English and Chinese site is The King’s Avatar (全职高手), which was made into a gorgeous Chinese anime last year
Tumblr media
First episode here!
Btw if you download the qidian app they have this audio book function that I thought was pretty handy, you can listen to your favourite novels being read to you ->
Tumblr media
(Click 听书 and it will lead to the audio)
Tumblr media
(One of my favourite novels 惊悚乐园/Thriller Paradise!)
For manhua I mostly read my manhua on kuaikanmanhua, 腾讯动漫 and occasionally dongmanmanhua. I made a short list of BL recommendations previously here, some other non-BL manhua I’m currently following are:
DOLO命运胶囊 (the art for this series is really beautiful)
女王的手术刀
哥哥是大笨蛋
看脸时代 (This one is Korean and really popular, it’s translated into English as well under the title Lookism but personally I prefer the Chinese translation)
A friend of mine recommended Duoluo Dalu (novel here) and Battle Through The Heavens (novel here) which I haven’t read yet, but if I’m not wrong both series are popular 👀
That’s all I can think of for now! Kind of off topic but from the perspective of an overseas Chinese I think Mainland Chinese entertainment have improved a lot in recent years. When I was young I could only remember a few shows from China like 还珠格格, Journey to the West, and Return of the Condor Heroes, and my own childhood was dominated by Japanese manga and Taiwanese Mandopop/ idol dramas (that’s how I learned to read traditional Chinese lol). But now there is an increasing number of quality productions from China, which is great for someone like me who is fond of Chinese entertainment (sadly Singapore’s Chinese entertainment scene is pretty lacking and Hong Kong and Taiwan’s entertainment industry have been declining, Singapore is currently pretty much dominated by Kpop and K-dramas). Hopefully Chinese entertainment will continue to get better and better in the near future ^^
In any case this list is non-exhaustive, but my answer is getting way too long so I’ll just stop here. I’ll add any future recommendations under the recs tag, hope this helps!

having self-discipline while studying can be immensely helpful, and it’ll help you get over procrastination and motivation slumps. here are some tips for developing more self-discipline! ahhh this post was kinda hard to write because i’m still trying to build up my own self-discipline! hopefully, some of this will help you guys out!
remove all temptations
yes, it’s so so tempting to check tumblr and youtube and twitter and instagram and whatnot while studying. a simple way to fix that is to log off all of your social media accounts, put your phone away and out of your sight while studying, and setting up a website blocker if you need to. chrome has quite a lot of extensions regarding website blockers, so try searching for one that you like.
be ready to study
get all of your materials out, fill up a bottle of water, make yourself a study snack if you want to, make sure your work space is clean and ready to go, etc. it can be disruptive to your own work flow if you suddenly find that you desperately need something halfway across your house during your study session.
don’t wait for “the perfect moment”
waiting for “the right time” and “the perfect moment” can be incredibly detrimental to your own discipline. it’s nice to spend a lot of time digging through a motivation tag and you feel very light and happy to start working. however, that’s not helpful if you’ve spent too much time in that and not enough time to get your own work done. get a start on your own work and try to finish it efficiently so you can get back to whatever you were doing before :-)
don’t make excuses
this is kinda like the one before it, but stop making excuses to yourself unless they’re genuine. i know that other things in your life may come first, and that’s completely fine! just remember to be honest with yourself and stop making up flimsy excuses to push off something that you don’t want to do.
schedule things.
good time management = good self-discipline :) keep track of all the tasks that you need to do that day, and try to finish all of them in the same day as well. don’t overload your schedule though; be realistic in your planning. you don’t have to cover 15 chapters in one day!!
start whatever you need to do at that time
by pushing it off, you’re inviting yourself into the dreaded loop of procrastination. if you’ve already fallen into procrastination, force yourself to start the task for at least 10 minutes. after 10 minutes, check to see if you’ve gotten into a nice and steady work flow or if you’re still just worn-out and tired and don’t want to do it at all. if it’s the first one, smile and continue on! you’ve succeeded! if it’s the second one, maybe it’s because you’re too tired and worn out. take a 5 minute break and then try again.
finish what you start
it’s fairly simple: try to finish whatever you start that day. don’t push it off or wait til the next day to finish it.
make up your own deadline
by establishing your own deadline, you set yourself a time frame to finish something in. this pushes you to actually do the work in that amount of time. also, it’s really helpful especially when working on projects. you can split up the task into separate chunks and make deadlines for each “chunk.” it makes it a lot easier to handle too!
take advantage of mornings
i absolutely detest mornings, but waking up early can be a huge advantage. by waking up early, you’re strengthening your own self-discipline as well as gaining a large amount of time to study and work! besides, it feels great to have a whole night to yourself if you finish all of your tasks in the morning!!
remember to forgive yourself and remember to take breaks!
not everyone can be hyper productive forever. people have their ups and downs, and you’re no exception. don’t beat yourself up over not finishing x amount of tasks that day or for having too many long breaks or whatever. it’s good to shake yourself back into shape, but please please don’t go overboard and despair about your failures. it’s so easy to guilt yourself and spiral away from your built-up discipline ;; the longer you’re off, the harder it is to get back up and keep going. the key thing is: you are trying and your efforts are validated and you have made some progress with your self-discipline and studying. forgive yourself and move on.
remember: don’t get discouraged the longest journey starts with a single step (◕ᴗ◕✿)
hope this helped and good luck! if you’d like to request a post, go here and if you’d like to see more helpful posts, go here!! thanks :)

hi yunyu! i was wondering if u could share some advice on learning how to read chinese. for context, ive technically studied the language for 10 years but im only at like, the very basic, level. how do you build vocabulary and NOT FORGET IT also what even is grammar. ty for ur time!
CHINESE IS HARD. SO HARD. SO SO SO SO SO HARD TO LEARN TO READ.
I’m here 4 u my friend.
LEARNING THOSE FUCKING CHARACTERS
Radicals are the KEY. You gotta learn them. YOU GOTTA. Make flash cards. Make mnemonics. Visualize how the radical is like its meaning. Once you start seeing most characters as compounds of components, they become MUCH easier.
Radicals are the KEY, part deux: the other reason radicals are the key is because it makes it so much easier to look characters up in dictionaries, if you’re not dealing with a computer character that you can copy and paste. Even when you’re using your smartphone to draw the character, you will much more accurately recreate the character because you’ll be drawing it in the right order.
Principles of stroke order. Muscle memory can work for YOU. And again, computers are much more likely to recognize input when you use proper stroke order.
Manhua is so ideal for practicing Chinese, honestly! You’ve got the pictures right there to help you learn the meaning. A manhua aimed at teens and adults will generally be lower in difficulty than a novel aimed at the same audience, because most of the text in a manhua is dialogue and tends to be straightforward.
GRAMMAR / IS / HIS / MOTHER / POSSESSIVE / WHAT / THING
There are grammar books specifically for Chinese, pick some up. My favourite of the books I own is probably the one called Chinese Grammar Without Tears (although the title is a lie. A lieeeeeee!).
Mentally parsing Chinese into “Chinglish” helps my brain transition into “Chinese mode”. Once I’m in Chinese mode fully, I am thinking totally in Chinese and feel a bit like Neo in the Matrix. But on the way there I do something like this: 那裏有一些忍者在追我。That / place / has / one / some / endure / -er / continuous marker / chase / me.There are some ninja pursuing me there.哎唷! 是你, 你是卡卡西老师, 对不对? 你用忍术变成了我的样子.ai / yo! / is / you / you / is / ka / ka / xi / old / master, / right / not / right? / you / use / endure / technique / change / become / change of state marker / me / possessive marker / appearance / diminutive suffixHey! It’s you, you’re Kakashi-sensei, aren’t you? You used ninjutsu to take my appearance.只求曾经拥有,不求天长地久。only / seek / once / pass / possess / have, not / seek / heaven / long / earth / forever. It’s better to seize the moment, not to look for the eternal. (It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.)I did this instinctively, but there’s a book called Urban Chinese which uses the same approach and calls it Chinglish. The extremely helpful dictionary mdbg.net will do this to a string of text more or less automatically! The machine parsing isn’t perfect but it helps ENORMOUSLY.
Using Chinese disfluency markers (那个,嗯,诶 etc) and liberally peppering your speech with what I will call casualness markers (啦,呀,咧 etc) makes you sound both more authentic and cuter. People will want 2 protect u bc u sound like a smol bean. (STREET SMARTS!)
LEARN THOSE MARKERS. 了 is such a deceptive little bitch! Look at it there, practically just one wiggly line, WHAT IS IT DOING??? COULD BE ANYTHING. This is where the grammar books come in so handy, you just read read read about all the ways that grammatical markers work in Chinese. Because Chinese doesn’t have conjugation, grammatical markers like 了 and 过, in conjunction with “result” suffixes like 到, do all that work.
Long sentences can be very disorienting in Chinese for English speakers because information that grammatically goes at the beginning in one language goes at the end in the other, and also Chinese does this thing where the sentence just keeps going on FOREVER.Hopefully @natiyrm doesn’t mind if I use her NejiTen fic Grill Party as an example of the thing I mean:“本来按照宁次有条不紊的计划,订婚庆祝仪式应该在市内的高级餐厅,邀请两家人吃一顿饭即可,结果不知道谁走漏了风声,在大家的起哄下,变成了今天闹哄哄的烤肉派对,而且还是在宁次平时用来冥想的自家院子里办。”So that’s just one sentence in Chinese, but here’s how I would translate to English:“According to Neji’s typically thorough original plan, the celebration of the engagement ought to have been held in a high class restaurant in the city. Just two families meeting for a meal, that’s all. But somebody, no one knew who, must have leaked it out, and under everybody’s hassling, it turned into today’s wild barbecue party in the inner courtyard. It was being held in Neji’s own private place that he ordinarily used to meditate.”Basically don’t panic with long sentences, just try to break it down.
Hope this helps!

The four skills are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Don’t be discouraged by slow progress!
Listening
Practice listening! Infants “listen” for more than a year before they can say anything close to “mom” or “dad”.
Watch videos and listen to music in your language.
Try to recognize words, even sounds.
Don’t bother trying to understand, just get used to the sound of the language.
When others in class speak, listen for what they say and mentally build images of their answers—in the language itself.
Speaking
Read aloud: think of it as training your mouth to make the new sounds.
Learn a short standard sentence, then substitute vocabulary/
Subject and verbs can change (I am going; you are going; etc.)
Objects can change (I buy a car; I buy a CD; etc.)
In class, if your “answer” does not come to mind, repeat the question in the language.
Stay in the mind set of the language, giving your brain time to work in the new language.
Reading
Do not read word-by-word, or translate word-by-word.
Prepare yourself for a reading:
study its vocabulary first;
review the advance questions.
Then put aside everything and just read, even twice.
Do not look up vocabulary while reading.
Do not write in your text book - separately develop a vocabulary list
Go beyond your textbook!
Children’s books are illustrated and easy to read!
Websites are rich opportunities to explore your hobbies in other languages,
Read/sing song lyrics of the language!
As you advance, read novels- but read for the story, not vocabulary.
Writing
Some languages have unfamiliar alphabets, so practice!
Write out sentences you have practiced orally.
Carefully construct patterns and then write out the sentences with substitute words–multiple times.
If you have spell check and the “autocorrect” grammar feature in your word processing, use it!
When you get corrections, re-write them.
Correct what you got wrong, even repeating in order to embed it in your mind.
