His mom is peeling apples. The once sunny yellow cabinets have faded to sand. The ancient wood floor is chipped in places and the old counters are full of dings and marks from years of use. Dean’s fondest memories of his mom are in the room. She makes a pie once a week. Dean has such happy memories of sitting on the counter in just a pair of shorts, covered in flour “helping” bake.
“Deanna, I mean-,” Mary hangs her head. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Dean. Your name is Dean. I’m trying, baby, it’s just so hard.” Mary has tears in eyes. “All your life you have been my little girl.” She runs her hand through his short, plum colored hair. “I miss her. I feel like I don’t know anything about you anymore.”
“I haven’t changed mom,” Dean says softly. “I just stopped lying.”
“I know, I know,” Mary sighs. She begins to peel the apples, placing them on the cutting board for Dean to chop up for the pie. “It feels like the person I’ve known all these years is gone and there’s this person who looks like her but is so angry and I just don’t know how to let go of her.”
Dean chops the apples in silence. He fights to keep his mouth shut. He doesn’t know if he wants to scream at her for not seeing that he’s always been the one who was here or tell him it was all a joke and he’s sorry. Some days he wants to give up and go back to being that person because it’s easier to hate himself than stand here and let his family hurt him.

It’s late morning and Dean is working on one of the fire-throwing traps that lately has been malfunctioning, when the alarm blares in the bunker because one of the hole traps triggered it. Annoyed, because that means that he has to haul up an infected corpse and he’s really not in the mood, Dean picks his favorite rifle, and walks out of the bunker to kill the son of a bitch.
The incriminated trap is only a five minute walk on the North-East side of camp, and close to that gate as well. At least the asshole had the decency to not make Dean walk for too long out of his safe haven. He shuts off the electricity running through the fence and unlocks the gate to go outside, then locks it behind him.
Dean cocks the rifle and raises it to aim before getting to the hole’s edge, when he hears a desperate voice yelling “Wait! I’m not infected!”
Confused, Dean walks the remaining three steps to see who the intruder is.
To be fair, he doesn’t look infected, no. He just looks like the most beautiful man Dean has ever seen. Dark unruly hair with a little bit of gray at his temples and in his long beard, so he’s probably in his 40s or early 50s. Despite the shadow at the bottom of the hole, the man's blue eyes are shining, adorned by crow’s feet, and the laugh lines in his face are still visible under the beard. There’s also a small wrinkle on his forehead just between his eyes. The past three years surely have given the man multiple reasons to furrow.
After two seconds of stunned silence, Dean wears his angry mask, scowling at the stranger from behind the rifle’s viewfinder. It’s not because he wants to see the man’s eyes better, shut up.

Cas sighed as he unlocked the door to his apartment. He didn’t need to look out the peephole to know who was on the other side. He steeled himself, determined to make sure that this was the time he asked those three little words that tickled at the back of his mind: What are we?
“Hey, Sunshine.” Dean’s smile was blinding as Cas pulled the door open. He stepped inside, almost as though he owned the place, kicking off his boots and setting them neatly next to the door.
Just like always.
“How was your day, Dean?” Cas shut the door and stared at it for a moment before looking over at Dean. His best friend was hanging up his well-worn, well-loved weather jacket on a hook that Cas left open for him.
Just like always.
“It was awesome, actually. Had a ‘67 Shelby GT500 in the shop today.” Dean’s smile grew broader as he started talking about his work. “She wasn’t grey, so I can’t call her Eleanor, but she was this sleek as hell pearl white, with blue stripes. I think her owner was trying to copy the Super Snake.”
Cas just nodded as he locked the door. He snuck a glance toward his room, silently hoping that Dean wouldn’t make a beeline back there. “Eleanor is the name of the car from that heist movie, right?”

His breath punched from his lungs in harsh pants.
Must go faster. Can’t let them get me.
The grunts and snarls from behind him were closing in, and Dean knew that he didn’t have a lot of time. He turned a corner, a flash of white out of the corner of his eye. He looked up, and nearly shouted in joy. He knew nothing except that flash of a familiar face, and he aimed for it.
He had to get to Sammy.
Had to tell him to run.
He flung out his arms, slamming into his big little brother with a breathless laugh. “Sammy!”
Arms, strong arms, wrapped around him. They squeezed him back, the embrace curiously warm yet cold. Cold like the breath that fanned over his cheek. Something within in Dean also froze, realizing that he heard hisses of rage coming from the figures around them, the figures with jet black eyes and the suddenly still Croatoan zombies at the edges of the weird little coterie. “I’m not Sammy,” the man in his arms said, and gentle fingers swiped across his forehead.
Dean knew no more.

California, 1986
There's a crowd at the Whisky, spilling out of the club like a knocked over bottle of beer. Music winds in and out of the laughter, discordant and jangling as someone tunes a guitar. There's a haphazard crash and more laughter as Castiel pushes his way inside.
He pushes his hand through his hair, flipping it over and out of his face. He looks around the bar, pushing past people and apologizing for his bag and guitar case. Spilled alcohol and cigarette smoke is an oddly welcome scent after the urine and body odor that permeated the bus he'd arrived on.

Oregon, 1996
He thinks of winter tours and prank wars and the familiar scrawl of Cas’ handwriting as they traded song lyrics and notes, pulling them together in the songs that defined Dean’s life.
He sits in the chair and puts them to the side, focusing on the contracts as if they can wipe the feeling of the heavy paper on his fingertips away. Dean works on trying to forget all the things about Cas that he remembers; the things he fell in love with.
It’s something he can say to himself now, five years later.

He started out running and afraid. Then mad. And now he was scared. Running scared again, but not for himself. For Cas. He needed to see him again. He couldn’t. He wouldn’t. We’re in this together. And when he nearly took Benny’s head off? At least it was somebody. Maybe somebody who could help, because he was running thin. Then that damn vamp smiled with his bloodied teeth.
"Howdy, Soldier," the vamp smirked, “Ya gonna hafta really hack with that maw, huh?" He smiled and Dean faltered. The other monsters were similarly cavalier, but Benny didn't seem to take it personally and it gave Dean pause. The vamp’s baby blues shown like jewels even in the pitiless dark of Purgatory. Dean jerked the vamp’s head aside in annoyance and stepped back. He tried to tell himself he shouldn’t trust anyone–especially this guy, but he had a hard time convincing himself.
"You know your way around this shithole?" Dean asked crudely. Benny had looked the man up and down. He rubbed his neck and chuckled.
"What the hell is a human doing in God’s armpit?" he asked.
"Don't smash Dick," Dean spat angrily, “Save yerself a trip,” he waved his weapon around, “To God’s armpit.” He stalked past the vamp who was almost a victim two seconds earlier. The vamp didn't know whether to laugh or be offended. So, he fell in step behind the only human in Purgatory. He didn’t know if the human had shown him a mercy or if he had just subjugated himself to a mad man. He didn’t really care. Dean sniffed and wiped his grubby sleeve across his face.
“Thanks for saving me first. Sorry for almost killing you second,” Dean muttered. Benny did laugh at that.
“The odds just seemed shitty, two against one. Don’t accuse me of any kindness, though. Kindness will get you killed ‘round these parts,” Benny drawled. Dean scoffed, “Not much different from my life topside.” He shrugged.
