finally home from my doctor’s appointment so i will address the clowning in the notes later, but here’s more: the entire narrative of atla is written from a pro-imperialistic stance.
While the show does criticize the fire nation for being imperialistic and hurting the rest of the world, the pro-imperialistic undertones are really very prominent.
A big part of this is by portraying violent resistance against the fire nation as bad. By portraying Jet as bad for trying to drive out the fire nation. By portraying Hama as bad for imprisoning the fire nation. I, as a latina, and a desi do not think they’re evil for resorting to violence! peaceful against someone that is using violence as an oppressor just places people in danger! and it is a common notion within countries that have a history of colonizing that peaceful protest is better than violent protest. but protest in general is villanized by those in positions of power, who want to continue to actively oppress people.
Another big part of the pro-imperialistic stance of atla is the “constantly reaffirming that fire nation citizens are not responsible.” They are responsible. It doesn’t matter that they are citizens, that they are fed propaganda, and that they are still just people. They live in a society that profits off of the colonization of the rest of the world, and they join the army, and all this other stuff. They are complicit. They are also responsible. They are not as directly responsible as the generals and the leaders of the Fire Nation, but they are responsible as well. The constant reaffirming of making them not directly responsible is a tactic to sympathize with the imperialism, to sympathize with the colonization.
The lack of responsibility placed on the Fire Nation citizens is a tool to sympathize with imperialists! It is a direct affirmation of the pro-imperialistic stance of atla, and why it’s written so that there is sympathizing for the Fire Nation citizens and none for the brown violent resistors!

Mako is honestly such a good man like..yeah he’s a lil clueless and cheating isn’t good but like! He loves his friends so much and would literally do anything for them and he did a fucking great job raising Bolin. Like this boy slept under his desk because he thought it would make things awkward with his ex gfs (also his two closet friends) staying at the same place as them. He wrote Korra letters including pretty much every detail of the day like. This boy is not mysterious or cool he literally just has ZERO social skills whatsoever but he still cares about people so much and I just. I love mako.

in the same vein, if you are able to find azula redeemable but not jet and hama, then there’s an issue.
yes, azula is a 14 year old, mentally ill child, groomed to be a child soldier. she IS a war criminal. she IS an imperialist. those things were because of her circumstances, but she is those things.
jet is a traumatized child of war. hama was a prisoner of war. jet’s entire family was killed when he was 8. hama was a target of genocide. jet and hama were both traumatized by the fire nation’s imperialism, and were driven to the point of fighting off the imperialists. the same sympathy that is extended to azula, can and should be extended to the brown child of war, and the brown prisoner of war.
