Patience | Jim Jimenez x fem!reader
Word count: 2.1k
Warnings: drinking, knives, general piracy things
Author’s note: I wrote this with she/her pronouns for the reader because I thought a typo may have been made in the request but if I’ve got that wrong and you meant ‘she/he’ just let me know and I can write a new one! Not sure if this is any good tbh, hope you enjoy it even after the long wait.

When word got around that some rich guy with a ship was looking for a crew to sail it, you were one of the first to sign up. Rumour had it that said rich guy, your new Captain, had run away from a life of comfort and plenty to become a pirate for some unexplainable reason, but you weren't there to judge, just to get away from your own meagre life of serving pints for a pitiful wage. The Captain, Stede Bonnet that is, didn't care that you were a woman and was just happy to have the beginnings of his new crew, so he welcomed you aboard the Revenge.
The others, namely Frenchie, Black Pete, Roach, The Swede and Wee John, were not so happy having a woman onboard - Frenchie claiming your crystals would attract demons and misfortune.
"Don’t worry, I had my crystals removed as a child, there'll be no demons attracted by me, Frenchie!" You'd said. It worked and you were quickly accepted as just another member of the crew. Honestly you'd been amazed they'd all fallen for such nonsense as womanly crystals and demons at first, but after getting to know them all you realised they were exactly the kind of people gullible enough to. Nevertheless they were great friends, especially Oluwande, who you found out possessed the only working brain cells among the crew of the Revenge, but he was always hanging around with Jim.
Jim. Jim. They were quiet at first (supposedly mute) and very intimidating. But as you'd all found out later on, could actually talk and did so fairly often, but only with Olu. It was frustrating to say the least, when all you wanted was for Jim to talk to you.
"You just need to be patient and give them a chance to warm up to you, that's all. I've known Jim for a while now, trust me." Olu said.
Well. You weren't one for waiting. That's why you joined this crew in the first place. And that's why you decided to pester Jim into talking to you instead.
"Jim! Hey, Jim!" They turned to look at you where you stood beside the rigging. "Can you help me untie this knot? It's too tigh-"
They grunted and came over to look at the knot, surveying it with narrowed eyes. Jim huffed before taking out a knife and cutting the rope just above the knot, and then handed the two ends back to you.
You blinked. "Um. Thanks." Jim had walked away before you even finished speaking, leaving you holding two ends of severed rope with the knot still intact.
Oluwande walked past smugly, singing about "patience" and "I told you so." This was just a minor setback; you could be more annoying than this.
The next time you came across Jim was two days later in the crew's mess. They were sitting alone at the end of the table, head bowed and stabbing at a piece of fish like it had personally wronged them. With renewed confidence you grabbed a plate and the closest food item you could find to slap onto it, and marched up to the table. Jim didn't so much as look up at you as you planted yourself opposite them. Mildly discouraging sure, but you weren't put off that easily.
"So," you cleared your throat, "how's the fish?"
Jim's head did not move from its position pointed towards the plate in front of them, but you saw their right eyebrow raise before Jim's eyes looked up at you in concern. They said nothing, which just made you more desperate to fill the silence.
"Lots of fish out here. Good choice. I personally went for the..." you looked down at what you had taken from the table minutes earlier, "... the block of cheese. Do you... like cheese perhaps?"
It was impressive really, that you'd managed to keep speaking as long as you had, when you sorely wished you hadn't. Where was the rest of the crew all of a sudden? They were usually quite good at interrupting every quiet moment on the ship.
Jim took hold of their plate and stood up while you resisted the urge to bury your face in your hands. "I'm gonna go."
"Yeah that's probably for the best."
"Enjoy your... cheese." They said. All you could do was nod and wait for them to disappear from the room so your will to live could wither in peace.
Later that week, when all hope of Jim talking to you (let alone falling madly in love with you) had been dashed, Captain Bonnet announced you'd be stopping off at the Republic of Pirates for at least a day to restock and "have a nice little break" as he called it. You were planning to spend the day off just wallowing until Lucius convinced you to perk up and join the rest of them for some fun.
As the ship docked and most of the crew bar Buttons and the Captains departed, you caught up with Jim. They wore their wide-brimmed hat pulled low and a bandana around their neck, ready to pull up around their face at a moments notice, not that you paid attention to that sort of stuff. Straightening out your own clothes, wishing you had taken the time to look at a mirror in the last two weeks, you called their name.
"Jim!"
They stopped immediately and turned to you.
"I was wondering if you wanted to go somewhere with me? I mean, with us. The crew." At the questioning look you received you decided to come right out with it. "Would you like to accompany me to Spanish Jackie's? For a drink. Together."
The dead silence you were met with wasn't a good sign in your book. Neither was the wide eyed look Jim was sending you.
"I'm busy. But thanks." Jim said. After that they turned away from you and walked rather quickly in the direction of Oluwande, who had stopped several feet away to watch the exchange between the two of you. You hoped he hadn't seen your crestfallen face before you had a chance to skitter back to the ship.
————
"Jim?" Oluwande asked as soon as they caught up to him. "What was all that about?"
"Uh, nothing?" They said as they awkwardly rubbed the back of their neck.
"Didn't look like nothing."
"Well that's what it definitely was so we should move on from this and find somewhere in this godforsaken place where Jackie won't find me." Jim said, completely avoiding the topic. They didn't mean to make you feel bad.
"Whatever you say." Olu shrugged and seemingly left the conversation alone. The two pirates walked together in silence for a few minutes but Jim could practically feel Oluwande resisting the urge to badger them with questions.
They sighed and got ready to come up with some sort of excuse, only to be beaten to it by their friend who couldn't keep it in any longer.
"Seriously, what is up with you and-"
"I get nervous, okay?" Jim all but shouted as they cut off Oluwande's question. So much for excuses huh.
"You get nervous." He repeated with a smile and a gleeful spark in his eyes.
"Shut up."
"Nah, you've got to tell me now. Come on Jim, out with it!"
Jim sighed again and stopped walking. "She keeps trying to talk to me."
"And.....?" Olu prompted.
"And when she does I just get all, you know, I don't know what to say and stuff! She just asked me to go for a drink at Spanish Jackie's and I said no." Jim explained without looking their friend in the eyes, knowing he was just waiting for the opportunity to start teasing.
Instead he just laughed. They continued walking for a few minutes through the alleys and backstreets until they found a rotting bench to sit at beside a pond of stagnant water. Still preferable to Jackie’s.
“So what are you going to do?”
“I don’t know! I can’t even talk to her.” Jim said, exasperated and wishing they were talking about anything else. It didn’t help that the wind was blowing the stench of the pond right at the two of them. Oluwande barely seemed to notice but he had spent so much time around the unwashed crew it was a wonder he still had a sense of smell to speak of. “What do you think I should do?”
“Well you have no problem speaking to anyone else on the ship.” He pointed out.
“They’re all scared of me.” Jim said, unsheathing a knife to reinforce their meaning.
Oluwande huffed with a smile and rolled his eyes. “Just pretend then.”
“Pretend what?”
“Pretend to be confident or something! You wore a fake nose and a beard for months, I’m sure you can manage to get through a full sentence around a girl.” Jim glared at him but said nothing in response. They were mulling over what Olu had said carefully. He was right obviously, but they were still hesitant, imagining all the ways it could go wrong.

For hours you slumped below deck, dejectedly throwing darts at a hand drawn target on the wall of the cabin, missing far more than you landed. It would be embarrassing if anyone was around to witness but you were pretty sure even if they were you wouldn't care. Why was it so hard to get Jim's undivided attention? You threw another dart, watching it bounce pathetically off the wood and onto the floor.
"Stupid darts."
You threw another. It landed and seemed as if it would stick but after a measly two seconds, flopped right onto the floor with all its dart friends.
"Stupid ship."
Three more darts followed before the pile ran out and you had to go and collect them from the floor. Only two had successfully lodged themselves into the target and they were promptly removed as well.
Just as you made to begin throwing again, a shiny blur flew across your vision followed by a thunk which you identified as a knife landing securely in the centre of your target. In your shock, you jumped.
"Christ!" You almost shouted, as someone stepped out of the shadows. Jim, of course, because who else would it be. It was just your luck that the one person who could make your absolute failure feel that much more mortifying was standing there witnessing it all happen. "Oh, hi Jim. How long, I mean, you- have you been there the whole time?"
There was silence as Jim stepped forward slowly, keeping their eyes on your face which had gotten unbearably hot in the last few seconds. They gently picked up a discarded dart, twirling it around deftly, before holding it between two fingers, pointed towards the target.
Jim's eyes stayed locked on yours, the two of you face to face with the target to the side of you, as they flicked their wrist and sent the dart flying. Just like the knife before it, it found its home in the middle of the target. Your gaze left Jim for a split second to look at the dart.
"Woah." You breathed out, meeting Jim's eyes once again.
They leaned forward until they could speak directly next to your ear. "You were holding it wrong."
You were sure you would have fainted on the spot if it weren't for the fact that your body had frozen up. Was this happening? Lord have mercy, it was.
“Here.” They said, placing their hands on your hips to turn you so you could see the target. Your face was surely on fire right now - you could not find the strength to utter a single word. A dart was picked up and positioned in your shaking hand. “Like this.”
Jim was pressed against you as they pulled your arm back and up, and you could feel their breathing behind you, so much so you had to suppress a shiver.
Before you could even comprehend what was happening, your arm was moving (with Jim’s careful guidance) and the dart was flying, flying, flying and then… landing? To your utter disbelief it stayed in the wood. You didn’t care that it was off centre at all.
“Hm, look at that.” Jim said, still behind you. “Not so bad after all.”
“Yeah.” You croaked out.
Jim smiled but managed to keep the amusement out of their voice when they next spoke. “Meet me on the main deck tonight, and I’ll teach you how to throw for real.”
And with that, they were gone. Out of sight before you’d even had the chance to turn around, let alone give a response.
Looks like you’d be learning how to throw more than just darts now.

hi! no worries, you’re not a bother at all! editing animal crossing pics is tough for me and i’m still trying to figure out the best method, but this is how i’ve been doing it lately!
i take a screenshot with my 2ds, then take the sd card out and put it in my chromebook
open the pic into waifu2
set noise reduction to medium/high and scale to 2x
open it into pixlr which i HATE. but it’s free, works with my chromebook and it’s not the worst one i’ve used.
in pixlr, (using various layers/ opacities/ color modes) i will usually
brighten a bit
blur background/ foreground with tilt shift (erasing away some of the blur if it’s covering objects in the focal point of the image)
change the color in some way, either an all over wash of color or a light colored gradient coming from a light source to try and add some atmosphere
add some highlights using dodge tool or add/ darken some shadows
if edges are still really choppy, i’ll smooth it out by painting over it using a nearby color
crop if i feel like it
save and open back into waifu and reduce the noise once more without increasing the size
and that’s basically it! i hope that’s helpful, if you have any more questions lemme know ♡
