Ok maybe not Steven himself killing the Diamonds but the Diamonds should have actually got a punishment for their actions of destroying and taking over hundreds of planets, killing maybe thousands of different species and treating their own people like a pile of dog shit and im sorry, while yes it is good that they were trying to do better by the end of the show, that doesnt change that they were dictators that murdered many, m a n y planets and even their own people.

An important thread. An critique of Avatar isn't a personal attack on you, the show isn't perfect, and has some racist aspects.

Yellowface was used with the character of the jade fusion. Specifically narrow eyes and buck teeth. One of my first posts talked about yellowface in Steven Universe. Even though neither of Jade’s components had narrow eyes, the fusion had narrow eyes. Jade is a very culturally charged gemstone for Asians like me. Yellowface caricatures typically consisted of narrow eyes and bad teeth, which is exactly what happened with the jade fusion.

There’s little Larimar as well who also has very narrow eyes and speaks with a creepy voice and reminds me very much of Asian caricatures.

I am frustrated with the problems of ATLA especially with how most of the cast and crew were white and that Iroh’s voice actor was replaced by a white man after the original Japanese voice actor died.

I’m angry about a lot of things in ATLA and I agree that it is problematic media. I also disagree with Iroh’s redemption and how he barely got any consequences for his imperialism. Although cultural consultants were used, it still was an unsatisfactory job to me and I feel like it could have been done significantly better by own voices.

I’m not Jewish, so I won’t discuss the Diamonds.

Can someone explain to me why Steven Universe is on the DNI/problematic media lists of blogs who are actively involved in ATLA?

Yeah for me, I list Steven Universe because it has explicitly used yellowface in the show and blackface in the art books as well as general racism with the whole concept of a human zoo combined with redeeming intergalactic dictators. The yellowface was personally triggering for me. There’s also the pedo shit that goes on behind the scenes as well as racist remarks by the creators.

As an Asian American, I personally find a lot of problems with ATLA as well in terms of racism in casting and ableism with Azula’s storyline as well as issues with addressing imperialism. But for me, I don’t have it on my mental DNI list because it has less issues to me than SU has.

I still find ATLA problematic and I criticize it a lot on my main blog and this one. But ATLA doesn’t trigger me like SU does.

Like for me, I feel like I could make ATLA better. But SU to me is a lost cause without scrapping it all entirely since the very problems of the show hinge on the Diamonds’ redemption.

if your asian activism doesnt include ALL asians then it is useless. if your asian activism thinks asia is japan, korea, and china and MAYBE a few s/se asian countries, it is not asian activism. asia is a massive continent that includes north asia and the middle east (surprise, the middle east is w asia).

yes weeaboos and koreaboos are asian issues and so is anti chinese racism and general anti e asian racism spiking bc of covid, but those are not the ONLY asian issues. 

what’s happening to palestine is an asian issue. what’s happening in armenia is an asian issue. what’s happening in india is an asian issue. there are asian issues i am nowhere near informed enough about to bring up on this post. include these communities and countries in your asian activism. they are a part of the larger asian community. do not forget them.

I stg excuses like "well theyre people of color so that automatically makes it ok!" Arent even excuses.
