Kapaemahu
Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu (Author) Dean Hamer (Author) Joe Wilson (Author) Daniel Sousa (Illustrator)
In the 15th century, four Mahu sail from Tahiti to Hawaii and share their gifts of science and healing with the people of Waikiki. The islanders return this gift with a monument of four boulders in their honor, which the Mahu imbue with healing powers before disappearing. As time passes, foreigners inhabit the island and the once-sacred stones are forgotten until the 1960s. Though the true story of these stones was not fully recovered, the power of the Mahu still calls out to those who pass by them at Waikiki Beach today. With illuminating words and stunning illustrations by Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, Dean Hamer, Joe Wilson, and Daniel Sousa, KAPAEMAHU is a monument to an Indigenous Hawaiian legend and a classic in the making.

Help me choose the order for my Black History Month reads?
Feel free to suggest things also, these are just the audiobooks I know I can get through my libraries. I've already picked out my first one (GHOST BOYS by Jewell Parker Rhodes).

*dusting off the old vampire book review blog* hi hello, welcome to my wheelhouse.
seconding LET ME IN (sometimes translated as LET THE RIGHT ONE IN), so good. the movie is also excellent, though the American remake is so similar as to be useless, imo.
SUNSHINE by Robin McKinley - my favorite book of all time. super neat voice, worldbuilding, character arcs, etc. i've read this like eleven times. has a kind of Buffy-esque vibe. the relationship between the protagonist and her vampire is not a romance, not a friendship, but a secret third (more complicated and angst-invoking) thing.
COMPANIONS OF THE NIGHT by Vivian Vande Velde - i've read this multiple times, love it. the title/covers are not indicative of the tone at all. takes the teenage fantasy of being swept up in a supernatural adventure with a lot more groundedness than one might expect. VVV also has an excellent dragon shapeshifter novel, DRAGON'S BAIT, that you'll probably enjoy if you like this.
FLEDGLING by Octavia E. Butler - fascinating, complex, i mean, it's Octavia Butler. lots of neat vampire lore with a scifi twist. maybe check content warnings, because it is a bit of a mindfuck.
HAWKE'S HARBOR by SE Hinton - no one on earth has read this book but me, someone read this book and talk to me about it. yes this is the SE Hinton, of OUTSIDERS fame, i'm pretty sure this is her only adult book. i remember being so so fond of the main character.
WICKED GAME by Jeri Smith-Ready - this one was just really fun, i got more invested in the main couple than i usually do. every time the author teased some cool worldbuilding thing she actually delivered on it. also, vampire DJs specializing in the music from when they were alive is such a funny concept.
CERTAIN DARK THINGS by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - the dual POV is so rewarding because the human guy is like "oh this vampire girl is so hot and suave" and then she's like "aaaaaagh what the fuck am i doing." also found the AU version of Mexico City really intriguing.
i could go on but i will refrain.
give me vampire book recs and i'll love you forever <3

Kidlit author Leah Johnson is launching her independent bookstore, Loudmouth Books! I recently read and loved her sapphic YA debut, You Should See Me in a Crown, which won a Stonewall Honor in 2021. Very exciting to see new Black-owned indie bookstores, especially when they're focused on diverse and banned books!
You can support Loudmouth Books by ordering through Bookshop here (they've got some cool recommendation lists already), or donating to the Loudmouth Fund to help offset opening costs and hear more about the bookstore's mission here!

not to be problematic but i literally do not give a shit about age gaps when dating vampires. they thirst for your blood. "but it's predatory!!!!" yeah. it is. "they're preying on you!!!" they're vampires. they do that. "it's a power imbalance!!!!!!" what part of vampires are you not getting

that specific brand of vampire media that’s like “you’re a late 90s-early 00s vampire in a leather jacket and sunglasses in some sleazy underground goth club that’s playing electro industrial/aggrotech/goth rock music” ruined me on all other vamp media, I too want to be a vampire in a leather jacket & sunglasses in some sleazy underground goth club that’s playing electro industrial/aggrotech/goth rock music

donate to Move to Higher Ground! also, support vampire/fantasy books by BIPOC and marginalized authors! perhaps in time we can have adaptations that will be fresh and exciting instead of, y'know, this.

I’d best be seeing that anti JKR energy for this twilight show too bc Smeyer continuing to profit off the Quileute tribe is not cute

ELATSOE / contemporary fantasy/paranormal / aro-coded ace MC

A bride recently asked me to make her a necklace for her wedding that looked like a fancy throat slash. This was a really fun project.
