This is the second time in my voting history that I’ve participated in flipping a red seat in Alabama for Democrats (the previous time being my beloved Doug Jones) so it’s always funny to see people turn around and say voting doesn’t matter when I’ve seen it twice in the past ten years flip seats in what is supposed to be safe Republican country. Republicans are digging their own grave with their radicalization and it is making them lose (and with your help we can make them lose harder). Vote.

Drew @jaspydunks' version of Tyler from their story @noobs-rewritten. Tried not to be fussy with the lines on it, especially the hair. I don't know how he pulls off that skirt, but he does it well.

Read Dancefest by @benzjr and blacked out
Dancefest has finally wrapped up after a hell of a journey, and I wanted to celebrate with a piece based on one of my favorite scenes later in the story when the three try skateboarding for the first time! I love the mental image of Rebeccas journey from horse girl to potential skater girl. Looking forward and excited to see more Josh Carter and where his story takes him!
Two guys on the left belong to @jaspydunx's Supernoobs Rewritten and my Superastral respectively!

Dancefest, Chapter 11: It's Just A Bad Day, Not A Bad Life
Tumblr media
And so here we are, the epic conclusion of Dancefest, something nearly five years in the making now. Josh opens up about his rough night, and finds out that maybe this weekend wasn't so bad after all. Meanwhile for the Superdudes, their battle with the metal bird might be done, but maybe a new one is just beginning...
This was set up as just an epilogue chapter; a breather, tonally, between the epic battle in chapters 9 and 10 and everything that's coming in the next Josh Carter story.
I've been working on more Josh tales for a while, but I'll be taking a break between stories to build up another backlog of art and plot. The story of the future super-something will continue closer to the summer.

Dancefest, Chapter 10: Fight and/or Flight
Tumblr media
We pick up Josh's California adventure this week exactly where we left it off: our Yellow Superdude staring down a giant virus-infected mechanical bird prop, wholly out of his depth and with his hopes falling apart around him. Or are they?
The second half of our climactic unofficial two-part arc here, though this is not the end of this massive west-coast story...
Featuring another minor appearance from @whynotzoidbergdotorg's old Supernoobs OC Yolanda Garcia, which I note here for completeness more than anything; it's already been established she's a minor part of this story.

Dancefest, Chapter 9: There’s a Raging Fire and It Burns So Near
Tumblr media
After a little hiatus (induced through a lack of finished chapter art, because that too hasn't changed since the old days), we approach the unimaginable climax of the second half of Dancefest.
As the sun sets in California, a new threat rises. Josh is more uncertain in himself than ever. Is he willing to take on the new foe taking flight? Will all his careful planning to keep his super-secret hidden unravel under the lights?
This is sort of the first half of a two-chapter arc; it just seemed fitting to end this piece of the story where it did when I got to it, because it was getting clear the whole thing would be too big for a single chapter. And so, you'll be left in suspense! At least for a week or two.
Featuring a further little cameo from @whynotzoidbergdotorg's old Supernoobs OC Yolanda Garcia. She's probably been seen more in the Josh Carter universe than her home Mavis Zero stories at this point.

I see posts go by periodically about how modern audiences are impatient or unwilling to trust the creator. And I agree that that's true. What the posts almost never mention, though, is that this didn't happen in a vacuum. Audiences have had their patience and trust beaten out of them by the popular media of the past few decades.
J J Abrams is famous for making stories that raise questions he never figures out how to answer. He's also the guy with some weird story about a present he never opened and how that's better than presents you open--failing to see that there's a difference between choosing not to open a present and being forbidden from opening one.
You've got lengthy media franchises where installments undo character development or satisfying resolutions from previous installments. Worse, there are media franchises with "trilogies" that are weird slap fights between the makers of each installment.
You've got wildly popular TV shows that end so poorly and unsatisfyingly that no one speaks of them again.
On top of that, a lot of the media actively punishes people for engaging thoughtfully with it. Creators panic and change their stories if the audience properly reacts to foreshadowing. Emotional parts of storytelling are trampled by jokes. Shocking the audience has become the go to, rather than providing a solid story.
Of course audiences have gotten cynical and untrusting! Of course they're unwilling to form their own expectations of what's coming! Of course they make the worst assumptions based on what's in front of them! The media they've been consuming has trained them well.

Dancefest, Chapter 8: Joyride
Tumblr media
Josh Carter's California adventure continues! As the cool squad soak up the California sun and hobnob with not one, but two powerful influencers, the Superdudes try to triage the ever-deteriorating situation of the yellow virus warrior and the beast he fought last weekend. Is anything as it seems behind the smiles?
Featuring yet another guest appearance from @whynotzoidbergdotorg's old Supernoobs OC Yolanda Garcia.

Dancefest, Chapter 7: Action with Jackson
Tumblr media
Josh Carter's California adventure continues, after arriving in the Sunshine State last week. Josh hangs out with a social media star he admires, (Kevin wishes he could do the same). Meanwhile, Tyler and the Superdudes may have more on their plate from last weekend than they thought...
This contains the first new writing I did for Josh after my surprise return to him in late 2023. I think there are some interesting threads going on in this one, and I hope you enjoy it!

Dancefest, Chapter 6: Dancefest West (or, the theme song from The OC)
Tumblr media
Flying in on Friday is another new chapter of my Supernoobs OC fanfiction. Josh and his friends arrive in sunny California for a second weekend vacation, and, Josh hopes, a do-over of their disastrous festival experience last weekend. But while the future superstar meets someone special, Tyler finds some cold comfort back in Cornbury.
This is the last full chapter I finished in 2019 before I put down Josh for a while, and @whynotzoidbergdotorg's old Supernoobs OC Yolanda Garcia features again late in the chapter.
What waits for our heroes under the palm trees and sunshine of the glitzy west coast?

Dancefest, Chapter 5: Found and Lost
Tumblr media
Another week, another new chapter of Dancefest. (we're kinda getting into a groove here)
Josh has been taken on too much of a ride this weekend, but things just might turn around. Meanwhile, one Superdude's worries take a turn for the worse...
This was the penultimate full chapter originally written in 2019. It also happens to feature an appearance by @whynotzoidbergdotorg's old Supernoobs OC Yolanda Garcia, which I hope they're still okay with appearing in this universe. Have fun with it!

Dancefest, Chapter 4: The Four Virus Beasts of the Noob-pocalypse
Tumblr media
The adventures of Josh Carter on vacation continue in the new chapter of Dancefest. Though it seems like he's been dragged into a fight he doesn't want to wage; this won't end well for anyone.
Continuing to go through the chapters originally written in 2019 before I set this down for a while. Feeling confident enough about how far ahead I am that I might try and set up a once-a-week cadence again, chapter art permitting.

Dancefest, Chapter 3: I Would’ve Held On, But I Got Distracted
Tumblr media
After over four and a half years, the story of Josh Carter, future superstar and reluctant superhero, makes a surprising return! Just when you thought you (and Josh) were safe from virus-laden angst...
When I left things back in 2019, there were four chapters that were yet to be posted; this was one of them, so we're not going to be seeing the new things I've been up to just yet (though that's still mostly based on plans from back then). In any case, I hope you enjoy the new chapter!

The 2024 reboot no one was expecting...
Those of you who have been around for a while might just remember back when I did fanfiction, and if you do, you might remember the story of my Supernoobs OC Josh Carter, the aspiring social butterfly, future superstar and reluctant superhero whose life was getting way more complicated these days...
Back towards the end of 2019, I was really starting to lose steam with him; the inspiration I had for him was really starting to wane, especially given the fandom seemed to peter out and my previous partner-in-angst-crime Pumpkin (@whynotzoidbergdotorg) moved on to other creations. I've definitely missed creating fandom work over the past few years, but between not really finding anything to grab my attention in the same way and a series of setbacks in my life (not to mention the grind of growing my YouTube channel), things just happened to fall by the wayside.
But it seems I wasn't posting into the void after all! Josh and his story left a huge impact on the small but surprisingly resilient Supernoobs fandom, and over the past few months I've been pulled back in, thanks especially to @ghostlyapivorous' @superastral-official and @jaspydunks' @noobs-rewritten. So much so, that I've been re-motivated to return and at least continue (I don't think I should be presumptuous and suggest "finish") Josh's story. In addition to a few unreleased chapters from the original run, I've been working on continuing the story, and I've almost gotten to the end of Dancefest, where we originally left off.
We'll be picking up from there soon, but it didn't seem fully right to go back to using the old 2016 designs of our main cast — my artistic workflow has completely changed since then. So, it was time to give them all a glow-up. The primary goal was mainly to get them looking closer to the show's style, though I've also taken the opportunity to resolve a few longstanding annoyances with some of the characters and change some things up. Despite not being part of the main cast, I also decided to do an image for Zoey, given she's a pretty recurrent character in the series. Just like the first time around, expect to see new art of these kids in the future (though I don't think I'll spin up @joshcartersblog again).
Look out for the continuation of Josh's story very soon, but in the meantime, catch up on how Josh got here:
A Future Super-Something, the first story: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Perfect Disasters, the second story: 1 2 3 4 5 6
Over and Out, the third story: 1 & 2 3 4 5
Diamonds on the Rebound, the fourth story
Reminiscence, the fifth story
A Hero’s Prelude, the sixth story: 1 2 3
Dancefest, the seventh story (so far)
Text versions of everyone's descriptions under the cut.
Josh Carter
Josh Carter has only one goal in mind: becoming one of the popular kids. Enamored with fame and starry-eyed about celebrity, he's chasing the top of the Cornbury Middle School food chain with the help of his friends. Clever, ambitious, and seemingly carefree, he'll stop at nothing in his quest to rise to the top without losing himself, while making plenty of buzz along the way.
…But will something bigger and more destructive than the current popular clique or a mortifying social mishap stop him in his tracks?
Dreams of a social media-perfect lifestyle
Friends with Jock Jockerson despite not being a jock
His "walk-in closet" is practically a department store for one
The Yellow Superdude
As elusive as he is mysterious, the Yellow Superdude is the newest addition to Cornbury's local team of intergalactic virus warriors. But he doesn't seem too happy about having the opportunity of a lifetime; honestly, it seems like he doesn't get along with the other four at all. With the heroes already building local recognition and facing even bigger battles, can he ever become the hero the Earth needs — and does he even want to?
Alias: ???
Powers: Energy blasts, stretchy body, shapeshifting, possibly more if he ever actually went to training
Always has messy hair for some reason
Simon Parker
Josh's best friend since forever, Simon is the realist of the group. As much an inventive strategist as an easygoing wingman, Simon's a true ride-or-die in Josh's popularity adventures, turbocharging their social game while keeping his starstruck bro down-to-earth. They've been there for each other even in their lowest moments, including Simon's brutally public one last year. It's a trust that makes Simon unafraid to be honest with Josh. But despite all this, is Josh keeping a super-sized secret from him?
Enjoys the outdoors with his parents
Still recovering from a 7th-grade incident where he was dubbed "The Whale"
Maintains countless inside jokes and references with Josh
Rebecca Hewitt
Rebecca is a punchy wildcard who's garnered her own notoriety. Since stumbling into Josh's high-flying life in sixth grade, she's been looking to find herself somewhere in the many aesthetics Josh's influencer adventures bring into her world. Rough around the edges but fun at heart, she's not one to mess with, but worth having in your corner.
Recovering horse girl
Still throwing out Mini-Horse Friendship Force merchandise
Best dodgeball player in the class
Zoey Miller
Zoey is the intrepid reporter behind The Cornbury Hound Dog, Cornbury Middle School's unofficial school news blog. Zoey can be eager and persistent to a fault, the perfect attitude for hunting the next big story. She keeps up on all the gossip around the halls — especially Josh's ambitious search for teenage stardom. Totally not because she has a crush on him or anything…
An ace at alliteration
Has a venerable collection of visor hats
Elaborately daydreams of meet-cutes with Josh

All i wish for 2024 is every creator to start that project they’ve been thinking about, write those fics they have been planning, make messy art, and to have as little burnout as possible.
