Finished this piece! It's a study of a scene from 'Lupin III' but with a Good Omens twist. Recently I was reminded of the movie again, and ever since I saw that little yellow car I've been thinking about recreating it with the yellow bentley instead.

beat felvidék today and i cant praise this game enough… it has everything i want in a game: silly and creepy critters, historical fiction (and non fiction!!!), funny dialogue, relatable characters, and a BANGER soundtrack. i wanna play it over and over and over and over again all of my brain worms are only thinking of felvidék…

There's a character in JTHM that's been haunting my brain with his simultaneous complexity and brevity...
[AN ADMIRER OF SORTS — JIMMY "DARKNESS"]
Five pages; the duration of his appearence in the series is literally only five pages.
However, in the spirit of the holiday of love, we're going to fucking tear this character apart — analyzing him, and his relationship with Johnny LINE-BY-LINE. You're all going on this madness journey with me, as we ponder on what could've been, knowing Jhonen Vasquez probably doesn't even remember drawing Jimmy...oh well...
I'd first like to highlight this little monologue from Johnny before Jimmy's entrance. Sure, it's not said to nor about Jimmy, but this is a comic where the author makes intentional writing decisions...like including this tidbit moments before Jimmy's introduction. Jhonen could've picked anything else for Johnny to say, a zingy one-liner, something...so why this?
[CHECK OUT JIMMY'S BAG; HE'S INTO MUSIC!]
It's about to become very obvious that Johnny sees his own human shortcomings, and slavery to impulse within Jimmy...so killing him would symbolically be an "emotional enema" — but we'll elaborate on that as it comes up. Firstly, I'd like to give praise to the attention to detail in everyone's designs here. Jimmy's get-up is clearly inspired by an early-JTHM Johnny C outfit, reflecting his longtime obsession, and preference towards his "earlier work"...
However, Johnny's outfit is completely absent of his usual horizontal stripe motif [very unusual for him], and his hair's obviously different. It was as if Jhonen tried to make them as visually distinct as possible despite Jimmy's emulation...likely to illustrate how far removed Johnny has become from the ideology, and thought processes Jimmy came to admire him for.
[PUT A PIN IN THIS; WE'LL CIRCLE BACK 'ROUND]
I usually see Jimmy characterized as a goofball little freak fanboy, and understandably so...just look at that smile! He's thrilled to be at Johnny's doorstep — but his personality here is also pretty confident, animated, and self-assured [if not slightly oblivious]. I mean, he's shamelessly telling a stranger about his stalking habit, and inviting himself into their house? Jimmy's also very chill...he tends to speak a bit more casually than Johnny.
What I find most interesting about Jimmy is how upfront he is about where he believes Johnny, his idol and proclaimed "role model", to fall short. He doesn't subscribe to his pseudo-intellectual monologuing, and is seemingly a lot more honest about his motivations to kill than Johnny. Yeah, he's also an edgelord who thinks bloodshed is "cool", but in some respects you could argue he's more grounded than Johnny in terms of perspective. Also, despite his previous fanboy-ing, it's very important to note that Jimmy sees himself and Johnny as equals! He believes his presence will be beneficial to Johnny, which is partially why he's offered himself up as an apprentice.
He wants to teach Johnny just as much as he'd like Johnny to teach him!
However, despite being less than impressed with Johnny's self-pity, he's still relatively sympathetic to his feelings of ostracization. Meaning, he likely understands where Johnny's coming from to an extent, but simply chooses to handle his emotions differently...which says a lot about his personality. Aside from his emotional restraint compared to Johnny, he's seemingly a lot less impulsive in his crimes, having actively restrained the urge to hurt others years before encountering Johnny... Johnny, who freely goes on spontaneous rampages because of anything from an ugly tie, to a particular word he didn't like...
[IN ISSUE #4, NAILBUNNY SAYS JOHNNY DID "GHOULISH THINGS" BEFORE HIS WASTELOCK SITUATION, SO WE CAN'T JUST CHOCK THIS UP TO HIS BORDERLINE INVINCIBILITY WITH THAT..]
You could argue this restraint is motivated by fear, and this is likely true in part. While I'm sure he feared the consequences of murder, that fear wouldn't be eradicated by simply encountering Johnny. Based on his fascination with him as this "cool" power fantasy, I'd assume the loosening of this restraint had more to do with an ideological shift brought about by witnessing Johnny's work...above any emotional aspect.
Also, this is all without mentioning the fact that...there's nothing within canon to support Jimmy being a wastelock. Meaning, the guy's not as stupid as you'd probably think — he's intelligent enough to get away with murder in a world where the police do exist, and are relied upon by characters within the JTHM-verse. Plus, get a load of that wording in that second panel...not only does he slip into the sort of Shakespearen-esque prose we'd normally expect from Johnny — but he fucking makes his own weapons! He's a smith! Jimmy's obviously very methodical compared to Johnny, even if that's partially out of nessecity...due to lacking his supernatural wastelock protection bullshit.
While I'm blatantly selling you on the idea that Jimmy is a more complicated character [personality-wise] than people give him credit for, there's one person who's decidedly not sold...Johnny!
He's annoyed throughout their interaction by Jimmy's gay fanboy-ing, conveyed disappointment with him, and obliviousness to his irritation. However, when Jimmy starts bragging about sexually assaulting someone that's what sends him into a homicidal rage...or is it? What Johnny chooses to rip into Jimmy for is very interesting. He spends far more time bothered by the similarities shared between the two, only making a brief remark about his disgust towards what Jimmy had done.
"BE A BETTER JUDGE OF CHARACTER..."
Saying this in response to your biggest fan professing his reverence and emulation of you betrays a certain...self-hatred? He says he doesn't like himself at the very end...
Ultimately, I believe Johnny was so negatively moved by Jimmy because he truly was the perfect mirror of himself. They're both misanthropic, violent murderers who think they're far cooler than they actually are — Jimmy just doesn't hide behind philosophy like Johnny does. However, by doing this he inevitably exposes Johnny's moral whining as the facade that it is...and after losing Devi, and his own life, that's all Johnny really has left.
So, he lashes out and uses Jimmy's sexual peversion as a blanket justification to ignore the uncomfortable reflection of all his worst qualities. He's done this before...
Furthermore, we must take into account Johnny's recent developments in terms of personal indulgence by Issue #7. By then, he's hellbent on "becoming the insect" , and erasing any trace of his human wants in a misguided attempt to avoid pain. That applies roughly tenfold to arousal, which would only further his disgust towards Jimmy's crimes...especially when they're not far off from his own.
Regardless of his repulsion towards Jimmy though, Johnny displays an odd...level-headedness towards him? He's shouted and gone bug-eyed at Tess for fearing Johnny was the criminal behind Jimmy's assault. However, with Jimmy...he's definitely pissed, but it just strikes me as...a particularly violent scolding? He speaks to Jimmy as if he's a dumb kid for his affinity towards himself [because he is] — there's an odd understanding in it, despite the hatred.
That understanding goes both ways seemingly, as Jimmy never fights back as Johnny is killing him. Yes, he's scared, but even to his death he's just hurt and confused by Johnny's rejection of their similarities. While it may have been difficult for Jimmy to totally escape, given his knife wounds, he's most likely stronger than Johnny with the added height — and if Devi could overpower Johnny, Jimmy could've at least put up some fight...but he very deliberately doesn't. He loves Johnny so much that he'd allow himself to die by his hands. Yes, Jimmy's perception of and infatuation with Johnny isn't one-to-one with who he actually is, but it is very earnest. He collects his Happy Noodle Boy comics despite them being entirely unrelated to his murders...
There's one last thing, something I'm not entirely sure what to make of — though I'll try to give multiple interpretations of this. As Jimmy uses his dying words to declare how he and Johnny are the same...
Johnny sheds a few tears, before delivering a killing blow into Jimmy...interesting...
I see two schools of thought behind this:
#1: He's crying because he realizes the truth in what Jimmy is saying, and it disgusts him to the point of driving him to murder.
#2: He's crying because he realizes the truth in what Jimmy is saying, and while he's disgusted by him, he's also mourning the fact that he must kill the only person who could possibly understand him as an act of self-preservation. This would definitely explain his "paitience" [relative to how Johnny treats most people] towards Jimmy. He gave him multiple opportunities to escape his house unharmed!
And if you think I'm crazy, or reading too much into this — take a good hard look at the cover of Issue #7...look familiar?
That's just some food for thought...
Whether you love or hate Jimmy, you have the admire the amount of nuance and personality Jhonen Vasquez was able to convey in only five pages. I've always admired how fleshed out, and memorable even the most absurd of his bit characters can be — and Jimmy is a prime example of that strength to his writing. I wish these lesser explored aspects to his character were expanded upon more...and I hope to do that in my own AU soon.

I've an interesting little headcanon for Johnny in regards to his hatred of sleep...
It's a pretty consistent thing throughout the comics that he avoids sleep because it shakes his certainty that his memories are real. Naturally, as he's more delusion than man during JTHM — but I'm here to offer a secondary explanation for this!
You see, I resonated with his hatred of sleep because of my own experiences with dream-reality confusion as a result of BPD, and that got my noggin fucking jogging.
As I thought on Johnny's behavior throughout JTHM's seven issues, a BPD headcanon as an explanation for this just made...more and more sense to me.
HERE'S THE DSM-5 CRITERIA FOR BPD!

I mean, come on, this is practically fucking textbook, right? Every panel Johnny's in is an exercise in "emotional instability" in reaction to "day-to-day" events — like when he tried to commit murder suicide over a Brainfreezy [that's a double whammy symptom wise for "reoccurent suicidal behavior]. He's unable to control his anger, suffers from paranoid delusions, and I can't think of a better display of "identity disturbances" than literally conversating with the compartmentalized pieces of your own fractured personality...
Oh, and let's not even speak of "frantic efforts" to avoid "real or imagined abandonment" or unstable relationships...
Would killing your date in a desperate attempt to avoid the inevitable decay of your relationship [read: abandonment] count...would it? It's not even the first time he's fucking done this, far from it!
You could make an argument for Johnny fitting every single diagnostic criteria to a T, and even if you couldn't you only need a minimum of five — I rest my case!
