In the top left panel, Eva holds the cup in one hand while she gestures with a thumb behind her, asking Martinez, “... Need some air?” She smiles reassuringly, “I can finish her coffee for you,” In the foreground Martinez looks at an opened packet of splenda in hand as she starts stepping into the direct line of the partially opened blinds.
In the top right panel, Martinez steps into the sunlight and her body immediately changes. Now she carries the face and features of a fruit bat, with large ears extending from either side of her head, a ruff of fur peeking out from the top of her shirt, and a face full of hair. Her nose is broad and flat, and she has two little fangs. Her arms are partially transformed into bat-like wings, the fingers on each hand elongating into webbed claws.
Martinez says, “I’m a hupia.” She raises a wing to try and shield herself from some of the light as she explains, “I can’t go out in the sun.” Eva looks momentarily surprised behind her.
Eva says, “Oh. Oh!” The second left panel shows a panned out shot of Eva rushing over to close the blinds, saying, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright,” Martinez says.
“Not like you knew,” Secretary echoes, pausing. They were also about to go over and close the blinds, but Eva beat them to it.
In the third left panel, Eva says somewhat forlornly, “Still…” as she rests her hand against the blinds.
In the foreground, we see Martinez’s face in profile as she brushes some of her hair behind her ear, looking at the glowing blue of her phone’s screen. Offhandedly she asks, “What’s it like? Working for Dante Smith?”
In the bottom left panel, Eva says, “Mrs. Smith? Well…” There’s a medium close up of her top half as she raises her umbrella, speaking, “She’s fair. If there’s a deadline, she lets you know, and helps out if you have trouble with it.” Her face is somewhat forlorn as she finishes, “And she’s really understanding if you have, you know… family issues.” There are two glowing beads on a black string of a necklace on Eva’s neck. They glow gold.
In the bottom right panel, Martinez says, “Could use more of that round here. Marcus-” She’s cut off when Secretary places a single gloved finger over her lips, and her eyes go slightly cross-eyed as she looks at it, uttering, “Mhm!!”
“Right.” Secretary says, crossing their other arm over their chest somewhat suspiciously. Martinez has mostly reverted back to her human form, though there is still the ruff of fur on her chest and though her ears remain slightly pointed. End ID

The top left panel shows Eva leaning over and looking at Martinez, a paper cup in one hand and the other hand used to steady herself on the counter behind her. She asks, “Is it always like this?” We see part of Martinez’s face in the bottom right foreground of the panel, but she says nothing.
In the top right panel, Secretary responds instead with, “You have no idea!” They throw their hands up as they sit at the little break room table, resting their elbows on the surface as they rant, “They review your timesheets to see if you’re coming early and make sure you leave late. S’all ‘team morale’ until you ask for even a little leniency- then you’re irresponsible for not dedicating every minute to the glories of Fuzzbee.”
The middle left panel shows Martinez sitting at the table across from Secretary, looking at a phone in one hand while holding onto the handle of the mug with the other. In the foreground, we see Eva’s back as she puts her hands on her hips, telling Secretary, “That’s fucked. You don’t deserve that.”
“They don’t.” Martinez says.
“None of us do,” Secretary says in the second right panel. We see the back of their head as they place a hand on Martinez’s. Martinez looks at them with a somewhat morose expression.
In the bottom left panel, Eva asks, “How do you deal with it all?” We see her back from the waist up as she looks at Secretary, who reaches up behind themself to crumple a paper memo stuck to the window in a fist.
Secretary replies, “Honey coffee.”
The paper memo says, “Bee-ware! Honey contains unnecessary calories! As such, Fuzzbee will no longer provide employees with sweetener-”
Secretary continues, “But- God, I don’t know how you do it, Martinez.” They look at Martinez, who sits in the foreground, checking her phone, “At least she stays out of the lobby! How do you deal with her all the time?”
We see the back of Martinez’s head in the third right panel as she jolts. She hadn’t been paying as much attention, as is evident by the text which has appeared on her phone screen, lightly glowing blue. It is formatted like a 4chan greentext post, saying, “> blow brew triple espresso, five splendas, but make sure no ones sees the splenda. Say she takes it-”
The bottom right panel is divided in two. In the top half, there is a close up of Martinez’s face as she glances to the side, blue lights reflected off of her eyes as she says meekly, “I mean, as well as I can, I guess.”
The second half shows Martinez turning bodily away from the other two as she says, “I can deal with it.” In the background, Eva watches with a silent expression of pity as Secretary sits and doesn’t press any further. End ID

There are two floating panels which are popped out from the top panel. In the first, we see a panned shot of Eva opening the door for Martinez, who hunches over with her arms protectively covering her chest. Martinez has no face, while Eva has two little dot eyes.
In the foreground, the Secretary looks over their shoulder at both.
In the second floating panel is a medium close up of Secretary as they raise their arm, calling out a frenzied little, “Wait up!” The opera glove on their raised hand rides down somewhat, revealing the little pinprick of some of the keratin scales covering their forearms.
The top panel shows a wide shot of the three. Martinez stands in the middle, trying to take up as little space as possible, as Secretary places themself between the window and Martinez, two long antennae wiggling out from their hair. As Secretary blocks the window’s light, Martinez glances at them, grateful. Eva, standing at Martinez’s other side, looks down at her curiously and cocks her head with a question mark floating above her.
The second left panel shows a close up of Secretary’s white gloved hand holding her badge up to a card reader with a BEEP. A timer attached to the reader ticks up to one second, showing that it’s timing their time in the breakroom.
The third left panel shows the back of Martinez’s head as she reaches up with one hand to pull down a mug from the cabinet. The cabinet is full of shitty paper cups threatening to spill out and very few mugs, while the mug in her hand has the partial quote of “be a yardstick of quality” written on it. Martinez instead looks at her phone screen, which glows an ever-so-pale blue.
From the bottom left panel, Eva says, “Well, your boss seems… interesting.” She holds a paper cup in one hand and an expression of barely contained incredulity. The umbrella in her hand has the grip of her sword visible.
In the bottom right panel, Martinez says, “That’s one way to put it. She stirs the cup with a wooden spoon as Eva stands behind her, closing the cabinet door after her.
In the foreground, Secretary says flatly, “Not a good way. But a way to put it.”
“Is the pay alright, at least?” Eva asks.
“Barely-” Secretary raises a mug of their own, “I’m part-time, technically.”
Martinez glances at Secretary and asks, “Shouldn’t you be full-time by now?”
“You’d think!” Secretary says, “It’s not as if I’m unqualified. Hell, even without this, I’ve got my own business to worry about!” They continue, growing progressively more sour, “The only reason I’m still here is because I’ve been promised backpay for the past two years of overtime.” END ID.

The top left panel shows a medium close up of Dante and Eva as Dante says, “Great- Miss Valentina, would you mind…?”
Eva hoists the umbrella over her shoulder as she cheerfully replies, “One sugar, heavy cream, right?”
“Exactly!” Dante says, “Thank you, Miss Valentina.”
The top middle panel shows a similar shot of Elisa as she raises a finger, eyes closed, and says, “In that case, I could also use a drink.” In the background, Dante and Xi begin to make their way to Elisa’s office. Then they look over their shoulders as Elisa barks, “Martinez! Go along with Mrs. Smith’s secretary. Get me the usual.”
The top right panel shows Martinez giving a somewhat incredulous look, asking with a forced smile, “The… usual. Hot drink. From the break room.” She speaks even as Elisa points her yardstick in her face, a blue sheen reflecting off of it.
“Yes, the usual.” Elisa says, “The drink I like. You know it.”
The middle left panel shows a medium shot of Martinez as she raises a hand, trying to be discreet as she says, “I- I can’t really-”
“Of course you can!” Elisa cheerfully says from off screen, “Let’s not be so negative, hm?”
The middle middle panel shows Martinez in the same position as she looks flatly forward at Elisa, an anime sweatdrop hovering on her head.
The middle right panel shows a close up of Elisa as she apparently suddenly changes her tune, expression becoming annoyed as she grinds out, “Or whatever is available. Is fine. I suppose.” In the background, Nora takes notice as Elisa seems to have lost her pupils, leaving her eyes entirely white except for little blue traces at the corners.
The bottom right panel shows a medium shot of Eva glancing over her shoulder, an eyebrow rising at the suddenly strange behavior. Elisa has already retreated to her office and, from off screen, she tells Dante, “You have that assistant of yours well-trained.”
In the background, Dante replies, “Not so much ‘well-trained’ as ‘well-paid’.” Dante and Xi are following Elisa. Behind Eva, a hint of Martinez’s hair can be seen as follows closely behind.

The top left panel shows both Elisa and the seated employee, Marcus, from the waist up. From the background, Barrett smilingly shoves her yardstick in Marcus’s face. The yardstick’s wood slowly turns grey as Marcus looks over his shoulder at it, two delayed exclamation points appearing behind him as he realizes he’s been caught.
The panel directly underneath it is split partially in two as Elisa attaches the yardstick to the black background behind the panels, separating Marcus from the rest of the room while simultaneously tilting a camera down. Marcus jolts back in his seat, eyes trained on the camera lens.
The top right panel shows a medium shot of Elisa’s top half as she sweeps a hand in front of her, giving a corporate smile as she says, “Dame Xing and the prodigal Smith daughter, here to see little ol’ me!” In the background, several other employees stand and clap, expressions neutral if not outright annoyed. Elisa continues, “You’ve made me the luckiest girl this side of Silicon Valley.”
Marcus doesn’t participate in the clapping. He’s too busy leaning back in his seat, uncomfortable, and staring at the camera pointed at his face with wide eyes.
Despite the blackness behind the panels in the top left part of the page, the background behind the rest of the panels are a pristine white. This is because the black hostility is being channeled into the middle left panel, where in the foreground, Dante disguises the way it disappears into her palm by brushing some of her braids behind her ear. A polite, inscrutable smile rests on her face.
Behind her, Xi bows, giving a little cheeky smile as he says, “I’m sure that the girls who actually live in Silicon Valley may beg to differ, Miss Barrett.”
The middle right panel shows a close up of Elisa’s face as she holds Dante’s outstretched hand, bending her head down as if in the process of kissing it. With a fake smile, Elisa says, “No need to be so modest! It doesn’t become so skilled a wizard.”
In the bottom left panel, we see Elisa’s shoulder and hands as she wraps both hands around Dante’s single hand, trying to lead. The fingers on one hand are nonexistent while on the other hand, there’s too few, as though an AI had drawn them. She asks, “Now, is there anything I can get you to drink? Anything you’d like!”
Dante looks down at Elisa’s hands with a flat look of mistrust, white, curved lines haloing her head like the lines one might see in a chart of Earth’s magnetic fields. Behind her, Eva looks at Dante with concern, unable to stop herself from resting a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“No thank you,” Xi says in the bottom right panel. Dante takes Eva’s hand off of her shoulder and holds it, looking to Eva as she says, “I could use some coffee, actually.”
The panel directly below shows a medium shot of Nora, Dante, and Elisa. Dante looks to Elisa as Elisa sweeps an arm out, looking rather like a scarecrow, and says, “Well, we have some specialty C-Kups in the breakroom- only the best for my employees.”
Nora looks down, not looking particularly interested in anything.

The top panel shows a medium panned out shot of the group as they stand at the large, oval table in the center of the room. Martinez, apparently becoming more flustered by the lackluster response, continues, “Almost all company meetings take place here and are supervised by Miss Barrett herself.” She gestures to the wall behind her as she continues, “The wall that you see behind us can be used to project screens for zoom meetings when the board of directors calls in.”
The projection wall is lit up in the same telltale blue as the rest of the electronics, with a large digital eye staring back at the viewer. Beneath is an organizational chart that one might see used in business meetings.
We see Xi and Nora from the back and Dante in profile, though none of them seem particularly impressed. Eva, smiling, encouragingly claps for Martinez.
Dante asks, “I thought every department was here?”
In the middle left panel, Martinez says, “Oh, mostly- the Board works remotely.” We see her face in profile as she peers down at the thick binder in her arms, opening it up and scanning the pages quickly.
In the background, Dante holds the bridge of her nose as she long-sufferingly says, “Busy, are they?”
“Can’t say. Trade secret.” Martinez says.
Eva looks at Dante, lips parted as she lays a comforting hand on her shoulder.
In the far background, there is the silhouette of a woman. There are two blue dots where her eyes should be.
The middle right panel shows a medium close-up of that woman as she presses the strange, glowing blue earpiece she wears. In the foreground is the back of one of the employee’s heads as he sleeps at his desk, accompanied by a toy robot allowed to his cubicle for decoration.
The woman holds a white yardstick in hand.
In the bottom left panel is a medium close up of Martinez as she pulls out her phone with one hand, trying to keep a hold of the binder in the other as the pages threaten to fly out. She looks over her shoulder and asks, “Would you like to have a seat? I can, um, tell Ms. Barrett that you’re here-”
She’s interrupted by a loud SMACK! from the top corner of the bottom left panel as a ruler smacks the desk of the sleeping employee, waking him with a startled jolt. This corner is cut off from the rest of the panel by a black border and the form of Elisa Barrett takes up the remainder.
Elisa is a fairly young looking white woman with blonde hair cut to her neck. She wears a black turtleneck under a blazer and an earpiece that looks like the technological blue eye watching the whole of the room; but more than that, she’s drawn just slightly different from the rest, looking more like she’s been drawn in a corporate art style.
As the employee groggily rubs an eye in the foreground, Elisa rests a hand over her heart and says, “I know.”
While the background behind the panels for most of the page is white, around the bottom left panel, the background has turned black. End ID.

[Image ID: A blue-tinged monochrome comic page. The top left corner panel is a medium close-up of both Eva and Dante as they glance at each other with sly smiles. In the foreground we see part of Martinez’s hair as she disappears out of frame.
The majority of the top half of the page is taken up by the top middle panel, an isometric top-down view of the FuzzBee office space. Martinez leads Eva, Dante, and Nora to the center of the room, where she glances down at the papers in her hands. On both sides they are flanked by office cubicles, each with one employee at a computer with a screen that glows ever so faintly blue. Martinez says, “So this is the Hive- the uh, the main area. It doubles as our meeting room and office space.”
While Eva and Dante appear to be paying attention, Nora looks off to the side at an employee with black hair, sleeping at his desk.
Lagging far behind the group is Xi. Xi lingers by the door and looks up with a wide eye at the two larger blue screens which show a top down, simplified view of the office space, showing the employees to be surveilled at all times. From the ceiling hang bars of fluorescent office lights.
The middle right panel is split in two- in the top half is a closer look at the sleeping employee with his head cushioned in his arms, while the second half shows the tired, somewhat disgruntled face of a dark-skinned employee with bleached hair.
Martinez continues in the bottom left panel, seeming progressively more harried as she explains, “We have our finance department, marketing team, our engineers, front-end and back-end devs, and our content writers and editors all represented in this one room.”
We see her in profile as she passes by other employees, seeming tired as she speaks as though on rote, “This office was designed by Miss Elisa Barrett when she founded FuzzBee last spring; by having no space between departments, we cut down on miscommunication and have higher morale.”
She says, louder, “When everyone works together, we stay together!”
In the foreground, another employee peeks up from his computer to raise an eyebrow at Martinez. In the bottom right panel, as Xi passes by and peers over his shoulder, the employee looks forward at his computer as though he hasn’t stopped working. End ID]

A black and white comic page with bits of color.
The top left and top middle panels are separated by a blue lightning bolt, which breaks apart in the middle when a speech bubble appears.
In the top middle panel, we see Martinez from the waist up in profile as she opens the door to the room, saying, “Hello, hey!” She is an average-sized Puerto Rican woman with a somewhat beaky nose, light skin and wild dark hair pushed partially back with a white ribbon to keep it mostly in check. She wears a professional outfit; a dark grey blouse with a ribbon tied around the neck and ribbons tying her sleeves to about her elbows and a white pencil skirt with a staff badge around her neck. She holds several books in her arms and the phone between her shoulder and ear starts to fall.
The top left panel shows Dante, Eva, and the Secretary reacting to Martinez’s entrance. Both Eva and Dante look to her with slightly wide eyes as, in the background, the Secretary jolts with two exclamation points over their head, holding up a tablet. The blue phone chord connecting the tablet to Martinez’s cellphone in the middle panel is dissolving.
The top right panel shows a close up of Martinez’s face as she asks sheepishly, “Did I keep you waiting long?” She catches the phone in her hand.
“Not at all!” Dante says in the middle row panel. The middle panel shows Martinez extending her hand to Dante for a shake, revealing her to have long, seemingly acrylic nails. Dante tilts her head as she continues, “It’s good to meet you, Miss… Martinez?”
“Yes-! And I suppose you’re Mrs. Smith, and here’s Ms. Xing-” Martinez says excitedly. In the background, Xi lowers his monocle and looks indifferently at Martinez’s excitement as she breathlessly continues, “I’ve actually been following your work for a while now! About the types of celestial graves and Hell, and– and,”
In the background, Eva is depicted as a doodle with two dot eyes and no mouth, humorously looking on with an air of bafflement.
Secretary interrupts from off-panel, saying, “Martinez!”
The bottom left panel shows the Secretary from the waist up as they check the tablet, a scribbly grey cloud above their head and slight panic in their compound eyes as they say, “Miss Barrett says she’s… waiting?”
Xi raises the monocle to his eye again and gives no further reaction.
“Right away, ma’am!” Martinez says in the bottom right panel. We see her from the waist up as she turns around and raises her badge, reopening the door to the office while looking slightly frazzled herself. In the background, Eva watches on with a raised eyebrow while Xi lowers the monocle again, not seeming to have found something.
Martinez says, “Sorry- let me show you in.” End id.]
