what constitutes reality?

what defined parameters do we as human beings associate with the concept of "real" or not? is it tangibility? it cant be. so many individuals have their faiths placed in things they cannot see. is it a feeling? it cant be that either. some people dont feel the same things. if at all.

is reality even real? and no, this is not intended to be some cryptic cringe, something to ridicule and move on. it is a question. what makes something real? is it up to the person? and if so, what about concepts that not everyone believes in? why should one idea be considered more real than another?

subjectivity is key in its own right. but even then, we still cannot truly understand. i do not know you. i do not know what you believe or why. if your thoughts are different than mine, that is okay. sometimes i may even sympathize with you, even if i do not fully understand. but what constitutes understanding? how do we as humans understand? how can we say that we 'understand how you feel' if we dont feel that way or have never been in that situation.

so is sympathy real? so to speak it is. it is a word, a word with a meaning which can be said, understood, and translated to other forms of communication. but may i ask: how? how is sympathy real? how is a feeling of 'understanding' other's pain exist, especially under the circumstance that we are not feeling it? how can we understand pain we do not feel? how can we sympathize? can we? and yet again i ask: what makes it real?

i believe this concept can be used anywhere, this question, this burning feeling of 'what makes this real? what makes this exist? why this concept above all else?' and i think sometimes. we as a society.
