traditionally the dead would be buried with coins on their eyes or in their mouth so that they could insert them within the 10 second countdown to continue playing and cheat death yet again. the practice fell out of fashion largely due to the invention of the home console

Because they banned Russia but didn't ban Israel
because putting down the competition explicitly is normal in most competitions actually I don't know where you're coming from?
and because ostensibly European Values include freedom of expression in a "this shit shouldn't bother us" way
Tumblr media
perhaps they banned Palestinian flags and not Israel flags is because israel is a country competing in Eurovision and Palestine isn’t.
Israeli flags show support for a competitor. Palestinian flags show protest and disdain only. why should that be allowed at a song contest?

Studying linguistics is actually so wonderful because when you explain youth slang to older professors, instead of complaining about how "your generation can't speak right/ you're butchering the language" they light up and go “really? That’s so wonderful! What an innovative construction! Isn't language wonderful?"

I feel like protest votes should have a target to throw their vote away on. Something that points to the attitudes we want in the white house, instead of making us look illiterate. Omar and Tlaib aren't native-born, not that there's a chance of them upsetting or anything anyways, but someone like Cori Bush has been, to my knowledge, in the right place since Oct 7 even more often than AOC, definitely more than Bernie. Might write her in, if for no other reason than to signal what I would give my mandate to.
Also worth remembering that you might also get a word in on direct measures depending on where you live. Referenda in California for example. Completely blocking November out of your mind might not be better than trying to do something with some message built in.
Maybe I'm naive tho

Base idea: there is a language which has two alphabets, and their use is gendered. Men use one, women use another.
Like imagine if English but men write only in lowercase and women write only in uppercase.
Or print/cursive.

it's because when you know even a little bit about the context for why pluto was reclassified you know how absolutely stupid it is to treat one of probably hundreds of gravitationally insignificant snowballs on the same scale as jupiter or earth, and whining about the iau seems childish and ignorant
I've noticed something I find somewhat concerning and it's that for a lot of people, 'pluto is a planet' has fallen into the stock list of examples for what one might call 'science denialism', along with things like antivaxx, denying the existence of feathered (non-avian) dinosaurs, and flat earthers
there's a sentiment that goes like 'well, sure, you learned in school that the solar system has nine planets, but Science Marches On and we now know it has eight' and while certainly people should not take what they learned in school to be immutable law they should also like. have a concept of the rather significant difference between 'we've learned something new about the world' and 'we've decided to slice up the world in categories along different lines'
slicing up the world into categories is one of the basic operations of human thought and if you do not understand it well enough that you think 'people used to think the earth flat -> now we know better' and 'astronomers used to call pluto a planet -> now they don't' are analogous processes then you fucked up somewhere.
and if you don't think they are analogous, if you understand the difference i am pointing out and think it does not matter to the quest of listing stock examples of people disagreeing with things scientists say, well. you fucked up in a different place, probably.
