Hiya!
The other day I had a discussion with my brother about "Doctor Who". He recently binged the entire 2005 series and overall enjoyed it, but he never was otherwise involved in the fandom.
He brought up a point, I considered as a fixed fact of the Doctor Who universe. But maybe I myself am not as deep into the fandom as I thought and our discussion is a regular one among fans.
I never questioned that although the doctor regenerates into different versions, at his core he still is the same person every time. Now my brother said for him the different regenerations of the Doctor are indeed different persons, who just share the same memories. When I asked why he thinks this, he mentioned all the times the various regenerations talked about other versions as if they indeed were different beings. In the end we didn’t reach a conclusive answer regarding this question. What are your thoughts on this and what is the fandom’s overall opinion regarding this topic?
PS My brother asked if “Torchwood” is worth checking out. I never watched it, so I told him I would asked other fans.
Hello kind Anon
You've brought up a topic that I've never had to define before and never seen questioned before. I mean, I have discussed the possibility of different regenerations becoming separate people, with someone writing a fic that featured that; but otherwise I've not worried about it. Probably because none of the Doctors showed angst over dying as much as the Tenth Doctor did at the end of S4.
You could argue that memories ARE the person - mainly because Psychology states this quite a lot. Certainly each regeneration of the Doctor has a completely new personality, and the core memories return once regeneration sickness subsides. It's true that the Doctor discusses other versions as if they are separate people; but then again, we do that concerning ourselves too. Haven't you ever looked back at a younger you and wondered why you did such a thing, or how you would try to guide them differently? The Doctor is unique in that they have had that opportunity, through time travel; they just know their arrogance means that they tend to argue with other versions of themselves. Or so they've said. Inreality, we've seen them work together with other versions of the Doctor to defeat a foe/situation.
Weighing this all up, I'm more in agreement with you rather than your brother. At their core, the Doctor is the same person.
P.S. if you like RTD's Doctor Who and don't mind more adult themed stories, i.e. a touch more violence/horror - and sexual situations - although it isn't pronographic - merely kissing and some grim stories, then I'd definitely say watch "Torchwood". Some storylines will break your heart, but you'll care about these people.
And if you're still worried, I watched it with my teenage sons without any problems.

14 days! The 14th Doctor and Donna Noble. David Tennant and Catherine Tate are one of my all time brotps. It was such a delight to see them banter again. I think of the 3 specials we got, “Wild Blue Yonder” was my fave. It reminded me so much of Midnight which is one of my all time fave episodes. What were y’all’s faves?
