Admittedly, something I’ve liked in the past couple of chapters is that even with an occasional barb or complaint thrown in, there’s been a surprising lack of hostility between Dazai and Chuuya.

Like, we’ve had crumbs of this — of them caring for each other and looking after each other — before but it’s been so consistent in the last few chapters and it feels so very in our faces as well, front and center.

Like, Chuuya keeps trying to almost console and reassure Dazai or at least help him figure out what’s wrong. Dazai’s never been as open or expressive, this chapter especially with him practically thinking out loud, that I can recall. Dazai’s showing behaviors that I don’t remember seeing before but fromChuuya’s words they’re habits of his.

They’re not constantly shooting insults or attacking each other (whether with words or physical moves). They’re basically just chilling as the danger is supposedly past (until Dazai got his revelation).

And I think it’s because they’re presumably completely alone for once.

They’re not in the Mafia base. They’re not in enemy territory with unconscious looks and their retrieval target close enough to possibly hear or see them if they wake up. They’re not stuck in a place surrounded by a dangerous ability or where the location of their allies is unknown, but could come across them at any time.

This might be the first time in the main manga where we can get a glimpse of what they’re like simply with each other.

And it’s really not so bad.

Anyway, hc Gin uses masc pronouns when he’s on the clock and fem pronouns when she’s off. They just feel more comfortable being addressed differently depending on whether they’re working or not, and they choose to reflect the change through their clothing. Hence why Gin’s got a Black Lizard outfit that’s fairly masc and a really fem downtime outfit. 

They started swapping pronouns and outfits soon after getting recruited. At first, it was just a way to create a divide between their work identity and their other life. To create distance from the things Gin had to do as a member of the Black Lizard. 

And then at some point, it became less about distancing themselves and more that they just liked being able to switch. Gender is a performance, after all, and they get to choose how the hell they want to perform it at any given moment. 

Their brother got it fairly quickly. Akutagawa tended to address his sibling with masc pronouns when Gin was on the job anyway, if only because he got a kick out of confusing people and Gin didn’t mind. Tachihara straight up wasn’t aware that Gin even went by fem pronouns/identified as a woman sometimes, not until he saw Gin come out of the men’s locker room in her dress. He may or may not have tripped over himself when he realized that Gin kills it in both genders. 

Hirotsu really didn’t care, and doesn’t see Gin outside of work anyway, so he doesn’t pay much mind. He doesn’t really understand, but he respects them. Sure, he’s old and gender has never been something that he thought of very often, but he’s also old enough that he’s seen about every coping mechanism under the sun. If it makes Gin happy and an effective fighter, he’s all for it.

And we all know about Higuchi losing her shit when she realized Gin wasn’t a dude all the time. And maybe she’s just a little bit gay. Scratch that, a lot gay, and maybe Higuchi stops noticing Akutagawa as much and starts looking at Gin…after all, he’s really fucking cool and she’s pretty all the time and it’s really not fair. 

Mori respects it, because, well, doctor, and he’s not about to be an asshole to one of his most effective assassins. Besides. Gin lets Elise play with his hair, and it makes Elise happy. Obviously, Elise doesn’t care, because Gin has hair long enough to braid and he sits still when she does it, unlike stupid Rintarou and his shifting around.

Kajii is fascinated. He’s all about Fuck Society and their expectations anyway, so Gin’s deliberate flouting of the gender binary is awe-inspiring. He probably spends a little while wondering if maybe he’s also kinda gnc, before deciding it doesn’t particularly matter to him and he’ll blow shit up whichever way.

Chuuya is friends with Albatross, okay? A he/they enby king. Gender will never stop someone from kicking ass and that’s all that matters to him. He 10/10 supports Gin in all their endeavors and will Fight anyone who misgenders them. “It’s not that fucking hard,” he’s been known to snarl, after burying his foot into the gut of some unlucky enemy. “He literally switches outfits to match his pronouns! He could not make it any easier for you morons.”

Kouyou thinks Gin’s ability to swap gender presentations so convincingly is the most amazing infiltration ability she’s ever seen, and the fact that Gin has an identity for work and one for life struck her as brilliant. Kouyou obviously respects their pronouns because it’s not as if it’s difficult, and disrespecting competent killers has never been on her to-do list. 

Ace once called Gin “she” to his face when he was on the job and the entire Black Lizard squad nearly killed him for it.

And obviously, Q and Gin are best friends in enby-hood, no questions asked.

Autism themes in SxF

I’ll preface this by saying that this is my interpretation of the source material. I am by no means trying to start wars, this is my own personal opinion, and you’re entitled to your own. This is just how I see it.

I’m autistic. And there’s never really been a good representation of people like me in media. You get two types of autistic representation in films or shows: the super genius and the ‘low functioning’ non verbal autistic. The representation is kinda shitty, and I can’t list off the top of my head autistic characters I’ve actually felt represented any of us well. So, usually, we have to turn to headcanons. Finding small hints and qualities in characters that you can see in yourself. Personally, I’ve always headcanoned Yor as autistic, as I can relate to her want for normalcy. 

I was talking with a friend today about chapter 86 of the manga, and he was like “you know, he [Loid] sounds Autistic.” And in my head I was like “I dunno, maybe?”. Then, when I started to explain it:

“So yeah he relaxes around her because he knows he can be himself…and yeah you’re right that sounds autistic.”

So today I’m going to discuss the autistic undertones of Spy x Family. So strap in because you are going to here an autistic rant from a mentally ill kid, and there is no end in sight. 

So, part of Yor’s character motivation is wanting normalcy, like in Chapter two. Her seeing all the ‘normal’ people, wanting to be like them. And in chapter 65, Yor continues with wondering what normal really is, wondering if she’ll ever be normal. Normalcy is a major theme in the series, the story often wondering what normal families really are. I’ve often felt like I’m not normal, like I’ll never be normal, and I’ve always really related to Yor on that. 

Another theme is the sort of ‘putting on a show’ sort of thing. The Forgers are always putting on a show in public, pretending to be the perfect happy family, while underneath they’re a sham. Lying to the audience that is the world is, like, total autism vibes. 

And, yeah, Chapter 86 honestly feels like an autism metaphor of sorts. We often forget that Twilight is also a mask, hiding [REDACTED] behind it. When Loid is with Yor, he (subconsciously) feels like he can be himself, let bits of [REDACTED] leak through his facade. Beneath the layers of spy-ness, he’s still a human being with feelings and shit and Idk man this rant kinda got away from me. 

So, yeah, thanks for coming to my ted talk. I am so sorry.

This is a bit cliche to say on Tumblr at this point but the Forger family really does make a great metaphor and representation of a real neurodivergent family. Two autistic parents having an adhd child is so relatable too

anya getting overwhelmed in crowds or around angry / hateful places is so cool as like overstimulation and hypersensitivity. yor I feel like I don’t even have to explain it cause its the most obvious. even her love for weapons feels like a special interest lmao. except i’ll point out that she embodies the type of autistic person who is shy and appeasing to cope. loid is the kind of autistic person whos in his own head most of the time and really represents a person who is low empathy in a kind way. he has a lot of walls up socially & even with his own emotions which seems so customary to how a lot of autistic men in particular (but not only) develop to cope. Yor alternatively is the king of autistic person commonly associated with and reported by young women. they are all constantly masking literally and figuratively except with each other. This applies to Yor too but ESPECIALLY Loid relies on scripting for 90% of his life.

Anya hears / observes everything and jumps to conclusions, RSD Queen lmaooo. She also displays hyper-empathy which is on the ND spectrum as opposed to low empathy. and is like always thinking about and assuming feelings of others, and having your head often focused on others, even inanimate objects, and all very intensely. This is often erroneous tho because it’s based on assumptions. so it’s known as the mind-reading fallacy HUGE but true is that intentional probably not but

We'll just be over here not asking questions. No Anya you do not also need to go' And when Yor catches up with them less than two minutes later, not even short of breath 'oh wow that was fast. Yor doesn't think that sounds normal but normal is Twilight's field of expertise not hers, so she just thanks him very sincerely
