Fuck it, new headcanon time because I am DETERMINED to find a way to give Afton a motive. There’s no fucking way he was just born with the need to be immortal. (And I have stuff to back it up!)

I think that something happened with his wife (specifically death in childbirth). I say this for two reasons:

1. In the Fazbear Frights book Bunny Call, there’s a part where one of the characters say something about how “their father completely changed after their mother died.” I know, I’m grasping at straws but bare with me.

This random character specifically reminded me of Michael.

In Bunny Call, the main character’s family was quite literally resembling the Aftons appearance-wise:

Brunette, middle aged father with light eyes. Auburn colored hair mother with green eyes, two boys who look like their father, and a daughter that looks like their mother.

2. Fazbear Frights specifically has lots of dead parents - often, a mother who died in childbirth. And we know that Fazbear Frights books are supposed to be parallels. I think this is trying to express that the Afton kids’ mother died.

So, my new idea is that before any of this even started - William’s wife dying and leaving him with three children absolutely destroyed him. He completely snapped, desperate to try to bring her back. Somehow, he figured out what remnant and agony was and began to feel the need to find out how to harness it and use it. To do so, he needed test subjects. Agony attaches itself to inanimate objects, and when melted down it becomes remnant.

William began to target runaway kids or kids from bad homes (midnight motorist). He knew that they wouldn’t be looked for, and it gave him a golden opportunity to capture test subjects. He even began experimenting on his own children. They were in his grasp, so why not?

im personally a “william afton was a decent father and person but then something extremely tragic happened and it made him snap” truther. Idk about yall but it just feels right.

im not a big fan of “yeah he’s just a crazy man who went on a murder spree for shits and giggles” because it feels so lazy??

I see him as a guy who at one point had it all - a wonderful family and a growing business with his good buddy, and then someone died and it made him desperate to bring them back (whether that be CC, Elizabeth, or even potentially his former wife? I say this because in all of the Fazbear Frights books, there’s seemingly always a dead parent and atp it can’t just be a plot point for storytelling.) and in doing so, he became a killer.

I feel like people gloss over that he’s canonically afraid of dying because he knows that he’ll go to hell for his sins (The fourth closet). In experimenting with remnant and all that, he realized he could immortalize himself. The quest to bring back a loved one spiraled into him becoming a cold blooded killer who fears what consequences lie ahead when he dies.
