As absentminded as he seems, he doesn’t believe her. She looks worse for wear and he’s not having it. Sensing the possibility of her bolting, he quickly, but delicately scoops her up, bringing her even closer to his face. Now that Borsalino has a better look, he gives her a thorough look-over. He ignores the gills, not wanting her to be even more upset than she already was. But is not impressed with her overall condition.

“You’re safe with me I promise! No one will hurt you ever again as long as i’m around!” Not knowing what to do next, with a free hand, he uses his fingers to make light appear as a rainbow. “See? I’m a friend I promise!~”

Mitsu was small. She was very small. She was at most three feet small. This man was three times her size, and then some, and he had picked her up. 

This man was not very smart.

“CREEP! PERVERT! WEIRDO! LET GO OF ME! I’LL BITE YOU! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!” Shrieks of fear and panic filled the air as the little one began to scrabble and claw for freedom. Tiny nails dug into any skin she could find with a surprising degree of strength for any child. And oh his poor fingers. Her teeth bit down hard on one of his fingers, hard enough to draw blood on a lesser man. Let no one say that the child made idle threats. Though how threatening a tiny wisp of a girl could be was up for debate.

That shady ally you and your buddies have turned out to be a rotten egg after all, and you're their victim. The audience saw it before you did. Being stabbed in the back hurts like a bitch; I don't envy you, but take solace knowing your death was the single most pivotal moment in the entire story.

“Banana man? I’ve been called many things but that’s a first for me!~” What a feisty child!  Amused by her antics, he bends down to get a better look at whats calling him a banana. His smile fades when he notices the poor shape she’s in.  “Hmmm?~ Why’s a small girl like you in such rough condition? Did someone hurt you?” Slight flickers of light could be seen coming from him, a sign most marines recognize as “keep away”. 

The little ragamuffin was nearly skin and bones on closer inspection, and her cheeks were rather hollow. She wore no shoes on her feet, and seemed to have a few lingering scars on her arms and legs and on her neck...... a set of gills. Slightly swollen yes, but those were very clearly gills on her neck, three on either side. And Mitsu was trying very hard to hide them as she frantically stepped back from the man. Why was he getting closer? No one good ever got closer. “N-no one! I’m fine.... I don’t need help from a Marine! So go away!” Panic. She was a small child, and he was a very large man. But she would not run, would not scream. Not yet at least.

Under the waves, the world could be so calm. It was perfectly safe, and nothing could really harm them here. Not with Gregory slowly swimming overhead, watching over them like a giant many toothed guardian angel. Here, with her friend, she felt safe.

Without a word she nudged Little Caesar's shoulder, looking at the little mink boy with such sad eyes. They'd been here for hours, but she didn't want to leave. "It doesn't feel safe up there anymore..."

Turning back she stared up at the surface, so far away, and yet far too close. Mitsu squeezed his hand, and hoped they could stay safe for just a little while longer.

What would be Mitsus real world ethnic

Now that's an interesting one... I've actually been considering this because of another little project I was working on with Mitsu, and I think I'd have to say I'm UNSURE what her exact ethnicity would be.

Specifics are under the cut but the TLDR is: Mitsu would definitely be from Japan and most likely a member of an indigenous people called the Ainu. But I have not settled on the second part yet as I am still learning about the Ainu and want to approach their representation respectfully in any writing I may do.

I greatly encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about the Ainu to research them independently as I am by no means an expert. At the very bottom under the cut I’ve listed a few resources I’ve used myself, just to get started. As always- be careful of your sources, and think about things critically folks. (Also if you plan on sending any follow up asks, please read everything under the cut before doing so.)

Mitsu’s home country as far as I'm concerned is Japanese, and her name is also meant to be Japanese. It always has been. I've actually gone all out and researched a lot of Japanese naming conventions and Kanji. It’s actually resulted in a slight change to her name, before she was Mitsu Murata, now she is Mitsu Muratan. But because I don't wanna get bogged down kanji and confusion here, gonna keep any more specifics to myself for now. Now I tend to do a lot of research for my characters when translating them to real world ethnicities, jobs, schooling, and lifestyles. Especially with a character like Mitsu who has gone through so much, and whose culture and history is meant to be a major part of her character arc. Taking this part of her character into account, what was done to her family/clan in the past, and how she was made to assimilate in the Marines all led me to research cultures and religions more deeply. I am not gonna half ass anything about my characters, and I want to try and avoid being disrespectful to any cultural groups as much as possible. Even if members of said groups never come across my work. This is how I started learning about the Ainu People of Hokkaido. The Ainu population of Japan is incredibly small, and they are indigenous to Hokkaido, and have a very long history. Their language is classified as being nearly extinct, having been banned in the 19th century, though since at least the 1990′s people have been actively trying to revitalize it. For much of their history the Ainu were forced to give up their cultural practices, and in fact many still do because of discrimination that they face.

And this isn’t a thing of the past, they were only really recognized as an indigenous people in 2008.

This is all very real and very recent.

BUT

Although Mitsu’s experiences may align with some of Ainu history and oppression, this is by no means a one to one comparison. And it is not meant to be. I am simply trying to find a people and a place for Mitsu, that aligns well with what I have pre-established in One Piece, and I believe the Ainu culture and people fit closest.

However this is all something I am still researching, and something I do want to be respectful about for a lot of reasons. This is incredibly real history, with very real people, who deserve to be represented with respect. And I am very much not Japanese, and certainly not Ainu, I am coming at this from a western perspective and trying to understand a lot of new things. While I don't think you have to be part of a marginalized group to write characters who are part of that group, I do believe it is highly disrespectful to do so without first researching everything thoroughly.

WOAH! So uhh, Hi there!

Funny story!

I actually lost all of the log-in info for this blog over a year ago.

And then I got a brain tumor. (Don’t worry, I’m better now!) Which gave me literally blinding headaches every day for months on end.

ANYWAY

That all kinda made me unable to do any sort of blogging for a long ass time.

And now? Now I work 6 days a week, two jobs.

SO

Is this blog still alive?

YES- in the sense that I’mma be coming on here and poking other people with a stick.

NO- in the sense that I WORK 2 JOBS 6 DAYS A WEEK SO LIKE- actual art and long form rp is gonna be sparse at best. 

But weirdly enough, life is better, and this little Marine brat is still alive and well.

May retool the blog, make it look different, update some info, nail down her proper age on here, but she’s still the same lovable, foulmouthed, hyper little gremlin as always. 

So yeah, if anyone is still alive and following me... HI! I’M BACK!

"Then why are you sticking around Bobo?" She gave him a look of utter disgust.... That was slightly undercut by the fact that she was leaning into the head patting. Huffing Mitsu crossed her arms. "I don't wanna get married. It's stupid. And people get all gross about it. Or they get super ugly and mean. And you're already ugly enough."

"Why do all these weirdos wanna marry you anyway? You're a fashion dense banana whose probably a mobster. Like you'd be the WORST husband. You can't even keep ME out of trouble."

“Mitsu, please. It’s just adult stuff, love and all that sappy stuff. Besides, I would never marry someone who I think would be bad to you.” He reached down and pat the part-fishman girls blue head of hair.

"What did bananas ever do to you?"

She points one tiny finger up at Borsalino, and then another towards the LITERAL MUTANT BANANAS ON HIS DESK!!!

"He was given access to Bananas as big as ME! What do you think happened bozo? I woke up with a banana in my bed every day for a MONTH! He kept drawing stupid faces on them and telling me to 'have some potassium'" Her voice took on an oddly accurate portrayal of Borsalino's for a moment then.

"So I got mad one day and threw a banana at him. It didn't do anything, but he wasn't watching afterwards and slipped and fell. No one knows but that's why he had bandages around his head a little while back."

The tiny fishman huffed and crossed her arms. "Stupid banana bitch Bobo... I'm never eating bananas AGAIN!"

"He's awful, terrible, a holy terror upon this land! I should've run the second I found out he wanted to adopt me. It was all a trap! A TRAP!"

And yet she's hugging his leg and snuggling in. Quietly she mumbles. "I wouldn't trade my papa for anything though.... Even if he is a big banana bitch."

"How'd you think you'd be as a father?"

“Well...” He thought. “When I first started to take care of Mitsu, and then actually went through and adopted her, I didn’t really think about it. Ever since I was a young adult, even though I didn’t have anything in mind, I’ve always known I’d do anything to protect and raise my kids right. Mitsu just happens to be said kid, and she has definitely tested me and taught me knew things.”
